So after another fruitless attempt to create a route offroad following tracks using Basecamp on a Macbook... I surrender.

Each time I try and join two points on a track it creates a big loop via places I don't want to go to. Do I need to change the setting of something here though god help me I've tried, watched videos etc etc.

It's as intuitive as stabbing yourself in the eye with a nail.

I usually just use the view ranger ipad app, then export the gpx.
I then organise them in dropbox, then whenever I want a track Ive planned I can 'share' the gpx from dropbox to garmin connect on the iphone, then sync the track to my garmin.
It sounds long winded, but isnt really, and works a lot better than the garmin basecamp rubbish.

Not used basecamp but I’ve found using os maps or other apps like ‘GPS tracks’ much easier to use for route creation, then just import gpx to my garmin.

Have you got the activity profile set as direct?

Off-road routes do not really work in Basecamp because it will try and use roads where possible. Rather than create a route, create a track. This works by joining the points, it will mean you have to put a point at every bend and turning but it won't do anything silly. You can join multiple tracks and edit the points pretty easily with the icons provided. Note, I use a PC so I'm assuming a Macbook works the same way.

Yeah, depends on the map, not the software.

Create a Track if you want to ignore the inbuilt routing on the map.

Make sure you have the correct Activity Profile (for most MTB purposes choose Walking).

You can choose to rely on the inbuilt routing and choose the Direct option if there's a but that isn't on the maps.

Basecamp is really powerful at route and track editing. It subsequently has a learning curve.

There’s a drop down menu at top right I think with loads of activities. Direct is low down on the list

Try the route plotting tools under the Training section on Garmin Connect. Exports easily to your Garmin. I've never seen the need to install Basecamp.

Pretty much what @scotroutes said.

Talkytoaster maps much better than the Garmin map, even the free version of the TTMap.

https://free.talkytoaster.me.uk

I use it a lot (on Mac) for plotting hikes and then exporting to Connect and then my watch if needed/wanted.

I find the auto routing works pretty well on the routes I've plotted with it. as someone else mentioned sometimes you just need to make the distance between points smaller especially if lots of alternatives it could pick instead.

I've had no issues around Peaks/Pennines using the TTMap.
