I can't believe England are considering giving him the job. Hardly a management success with **** all experience and Southgate himself should probably rule himself out and go and get a careers worth of experience before he even considers it.

This will, if he gets the job, undoubtedly end up in the same way that Mclaren, Hodgson et al with the press and fans crucifying him as clueless blah blah blah.

Whoever gets the job, the outcome will be the same. England are simply not good enough to compete at the sharp end on the European stage, let alone the world.

^ I agree.

I'd rather we paid a decent bloke decent money and allow him to try to do a decent job than throw a shitload at some other over-rated manager with a 'proven track record'.

Who would you have in the job (bearing in mind who is available and would want the job).

The only manager I'd have over Southgate would be Wenger.

That would follow the well-worn path of giving the job to someone whose best years are long-behind them.

I can't hear his name without adding 'Badger' to the end.

Damn you, Harry Hill! 🙂

Or we could give it to 'arry. He's done nothing financially shady in the past

It's such a beautiful, honest and inclusive game. Really brings out the best in people

I note Sammy Lee kept his job despite lying in court...

Seemed to play ok v Spain the other night and better than under any of the other chancers. We are not good enough to win anything so what's the fuss?

Its only a game

Possibly, but I like him as a manager and as a person.

Apparently he was paid £750,000 a year to manage the under 21's where he could get on with doing the job with no one really interfering and zero interest from the press.
He could now be looking at 2 million a year and the extra perks of half the country on his back all the time with sections of the press looking constantly for anything they can get on him.

Maybe 750K is not enough to live on, I've never tried so I guess I can't comment but it somehow looks a better deal to me.

getting the job probably depends on the answer the FA got from Arsene Wenger.

There was an interesting article in something or other (maybe the Evening Standard?) comparing him to Chris Coleman.

I doubt he will be much better or worse than anybody since Alf Ramsey but he's worth a shot IMO.

The growing klondyke that is pumped into the Premiership every year is to the detriment of the national side, and the bigger that league gets, the less everyone (players included) give a **** about international football.

It's a vicious circle.

Southgate himself should probably rule himself out

he did, about 3 months ago - so they gave the job to Big Sam instead.

And now they're knocking on his door again...

I don't see why he shouldn't get the job. He's not going to do any better or worse than anyone else - the problem is the players.

Well, I don't know: look at the difference in the England rugby union team since Eddie Jones took over, and that's largely the same group of players.

The sooner everyone comes to terms with the fact we are not a top ten nation and that the press stop sensationalizing every non-story then the better we will be. It doesnt matter a great deal who you put in charge because they dont have enough time to mould a team of individuals, even the best managers take years to build a team of there own choosing so why do we expect great things from them with a team forced upon them with only a week of prep. The england manager is at very best a marginal gain on an average team.

And look how long he has to work with that group of players. Compared to a week for the football team.

We all know what is needed (ie an aproach similar to what happened here in Germany where the FA and the clubs work together to school the youngsters in a style of football that is played all through the ranks so a player can come into a team seemlessly as that player knows exactly what they and the other players have to do) but with the power of the EPL it is never going to happen.

It isn't the premier leagues fault, that is just the excuse that is always trotted out, the lack of British players in the EPL is just another symptom of the real problem, not enough properly trained coaches. iirc a couple of years ago there were 600 fully qualified football coaches in Britain, 20,000 in Spain and 30,000 in Germany.

edit, figures were not quite as bad as I rememberd but still...

Hire someone from AA - these boys can control a football just not their drinking?

Football fan doesn't get behind national team shocker! Who'd want the job when people feel they can criticise so openly, yet can't bring anything positive to the table. 🙄
Proud to be Welsh.

Being offered £1.5m year is a joke given the money in football. I can see Southgate thinking he is never going to get a better chance as it's qualifying then the World Cup but that money is an insult.

Do it for a month, get the sack, grab the cash handout.

Seems logical to me.

I wonder whether that's where they've gone wrong. How's about doing the job out of pride for your country? Too many people are just focussed on the money and have no character or substance (both inside and outside football).
Who can I blame for that?

And he's from Crawley!

Someone on the radio said he would end up as England manager at some point so we might as well get it done with now.

Why don't the F.A. spend 10 million and get a well known manager, maybe someone from Sweden or Italy, maybe someone who can hardly speak English. What could go wrong.

The U21s did ok during his tenure

not enough properly trained coaches.

Because it costs a fortune here compared to the charges in Germany. Details on costs here
More than 10 times the German cost to become a UEFA A coach in UK.
