Now that we're no longer swingers the pampas grass has to be trimmed back.
But the previous house owners obviously never did anything to prune it so at the core it was a 1m wide solid mass of compositng mulch. After cutting through it with the chainsaw just above gtound level it was onvious that the middle wasn't really viable, so were left with a bit on one side that we're hoping will grow back.
Question is how easy to kill is the rest of it? Will just turning over the soill be enough to get rid of it?
So far we've got rid of about 2m3 of soil/grass/compost and it's still a tangled mass of roots about 8" above the ground. Unfortunately we cant just get a mini digger in to rip it out as it's on top of a sewer!
We had about 1.5sqm of it in our back garden. Dug it out without too much bother. Personally I would just trim it, dig it and then glyphosphate to hell anything that emerges in the spring.
Just dig it up and replace it with a fruit bowl.

Fire, burn it then dig it out....that's what we did with our 2m diameter specimen in the front garden...made for an impressive display!
Hack it out of the ground bit by bit with a mattock and leave just a wee bit in the ground if you really must
