MegaSack DRAW - 6pm Christmas Eve - LIVE on our YouTube Channel
Had a pond a while ago but along came the kids, then dogs, so it got neglected and had to go. Now in the position to have another one, got a couple of ton of sandstone block so its going to be a raised pond, just after some ideas on shape, size and any top tips, photos appreciated to.
Thanks
whatnobeer.......if I could I would!
We 'found' a pond in our garden. While digging a bed, the spade hit something solid. It turned out to the first of a series of flagstones covering some Victorian water tanks that supplied the greenhouses.
We used the flag lids for paving, filled them up and now have Carp in them
Our attempt at a garden pond, we lost the garden wall at the bottom of the garden in some high winds. So had it rebuilt. Had some bricks spare and I got busy.
Quite pleased with it, have changed the filtering system now and it keeps crystal clear.
A few Koi, Shibunkins and ghost koi.
SiB, my tips are : -
Make the pond as big as you can
Make the pond as deep as you can
Install a submerged shelf for planting
Try and incorporate a shallow area where wildlife can come and go freely.
If your not installing a pump but are having fish plenty of aeration plants and some nitrate converters too (e.g Iris, Water Lilly)
Any shape will do.
I also recomend Fawcetts Liners No10 for general all purpose liner. Fawcetts
Hope it helps.
My tip is don't place it right next to a hedge as it makes it a real pain to cut the hedge.
mcmoonter....what a great find, a lovely looking area to sit and ponder at the end of a hard day, natural. Have you ever got in them yourself?
psychobiker......very neat and tidy, I like! Im assuming its ok to put an acer in the pond (if it is an acer of course)? Never seen one in water but looks very nice.
Konastoner...thanks for tips, pond will be as big and deep as possible - approx 3 x 3m and 5ft deep - 3ft high sides and 2ft intot he ground. Ledges planned for plants and wildlife, already got pump and filter box but thinking of getting one of the pressurised filter boxes as easier to hide.
crankboy....last pond was by a hedge, felt a bit anxious putting plank across and using electric hedge trimmers!
Thanks
mcmoonter once again 'out mans' the rest of STW - good find!
Our inspection pit conversion as it currently stands:
i plan to create a shallow irregular shaped edging all around.
Our initial plan was for a wildlife pond, but we now have this monster, anyone know if we add a pump / filter to it will it still attract the wildlife (tadpoles, dragonflies, newts etc?)

Im not sure I jump in, but my French niece couldnt stay out of them, it was the highlight of her summer holidays catching the fish when the tank sprung a leak.
Just been pointed at this link, and I think I have a couple of these in my garden somewhere.......
time to go digging
Anyone know if they fitted them under the floors inside? and how on earth did they fill them? Was it just from rain water?
