I need something that'll go over the existing paint. It's flaking off and looks a bit ropey. Original finish on tbe door appears to be powder coat so I don't want to take it back to metal.

Dulux products have always been good in the inside so was thinking of their Weathershield Gloss? I've also seen Johnstones Stormshield which is a bit pricier. Anyone know if it's worth the extra?

Is Hammerite still worth using or has it been 'improved' over the years to the point that it's crap?

If it was interior paint, I'd just give it a sand to key and then fresh paint. Would I be better off with some sort of primer to help it last?

A lot depends on the direction the door is facing.  A south facing door will get direct sun so a dark colour will retain the heat and deteriorate.  A North facing one will get no direct sun and a dark colour will be fine, and not show the moss and lichen 😁

Croma metal paint from the it's. It was used on oil tanks in Avonmouth.

Left over tins were used on my garage door and it's still on there.

Probably megadeath, but awesome paint.

No use to this thread though.

Not got round to trying it yet (and probably won't until next summer now) but I've heard good things about Zisser AllCoat as a decent outdoor paint for covering a variety of different materials. It comes in a few different finishes and I think it can be tinted to your preferred colour if you don't just want white/black.

I've found Bedec Multi Surface Paint to be absolutely brilliant for this type of project.

I've use it on brick, metal and wood and it goes on superb and looks good years later.

For me its the XT brakes of paint .... no nonsense ... just works great.

If it was my garage door, I'd give a quick clean, a light sand, a brush down and then just get the Bedec on. A second coat later in the day .... jobs a goodun.

Have fun

Scrape and sand back to a firmly attached smooth base. Read the minimum temperature advice because it's likely to be frosty in the UK for the next week or so

Water-based Zinsser Allcoat for speed. Standard colours are limited but some of the specialist paint places will mix colours. I didn't find the gloss to be especially glossy

Other than that, undercoat and one of the weather/storm varieties will be perfectly okay although it'll be a much longer job, especially if temperatures drop. Possibly one for next year?

High humidity will cause a milky bloom in the paint, so if you're in the UK it'll need to be a quick hit on a good day ATM

Zinsser AllCoat here on our old front door - half was sprayed in factory, half hand painted, both lasted over 10 years and looked good still.

In a few months I will be painting our garage door and front door, and will turn to AllCoat again.

Outside I've been using zinser allcoat, but the solvent based. Bomber. Strong fumes though.

With a roller application it looks mint

Local paint shed will mix it in any colour in the known universe

Also thoroughly recommend sikkens rubbol satura. Trad oil based paint, will withstand thermo nuclear and cockroach attack. Longish drying time but a beautiful finis

BEDEC MSP. I used to rate Zinsser All Coat but BEDEC blows it away.
