Have bought a Wii for the gf this Xmas and wondered if you have to use a GC-specific memory card to save GC games? Mixed comments on some forum searches, but it seems overall that this is the case. If so, does it have to be a Nintendo one? Have heard stories about various third-party accessories not working with Wii stuff.

my sons being playing a gamecube game on our wii (that one with the annoying little fat bloke) with no additional memory cards (but using a GC controller).
If you want to save games you need a card. I bought a third party card from ebay and it worked fine. I've forgotten now but I think it's a fairly common card type.[1]

make sure you download the Iplayer app for the wii we have been using it loads. superb service from the BBC 🙂
