Seems as if a huge number of companies have furloughed staff for no reason other than to save cash and reduce their workforce when it all ends soon.
Every day redundancies are announced by companies,or companies reducing workers hours and telling staff leave or accept the pay cut.
Then add in workers who will not be going back as they have decided to retrain or just retire or go self employed.
Hows every ones workplace doing or going to do, and as a worker what are you all hoping for.
I was furloughed in March, started my redundancy notice last week.
Had one interview that went well but not quite well enough so far...
Got a trial this week elsewhere, hoping that comes off.
Still furloughed. Will be for as long as possible I suspect. Organisation is preparing the ground for redundancies but I’m reasonably confident my little patch will survive.
Opposite for me, out of work for 9 months, started working day before lockdown, worked right through. Hopefully I'm in an industry thatbwont be too affected. Think there's going to be lots of redundancies soon, I imagine today's effective ending of lock down will make a lot of companies think about the next phase of trying to stay alive.
I've been furloughed since start of April. Seems like ages ago. And I've had a young kid so no learning languages, developing a six pack, watching everything Netflix has to offer
Fortunately I'm back on flexible furlough on 6 July: I'll be back WFH for 2 days a week until further notice. I was half expecting a redundancy notice so I'm pleased with this little vote of confidence
Not been furloughed, out of my job next week.
Been back in the office for two months because I live in a country with a competent government
I've been back at work for two months, but, I work for Travis Perkins, who have decided to make staff redundant, while flat out busy.
No furlough, collective consultation starts next week with 25% of people going. Everyone finds out their fate September and leave December if axed. Nice.
Forgot to add, Mrs King made redundant last week, finishes mid July..
Been on furlough since April. Go back to work on Monday, splitting my week between a couple of days on the office and WFH.
I work in the steel industry so I’ve had concerns but glad to be going back!
Hopefully I’ll use the bike for the work days since I’ve no kids to pick up from nursery / school afterwards.
leave December
That's shit, would be better to have another month more or less not finishing when hiring stops for a month
@uselesshippy, TP is a strange entity, it owns Toolstation and wicks that sell a lot of the sames stuff at different prices, they own Benchmarx that sells doors and kitchens and hardware, cheaper than Wickes but more expensive than toolstation, and TP itself that sells the same stuff at different prices on different days, when ever ive got stuff from there.
Also 6 people in the last 2 days.
1 layed off till September works in retail
1 wfh till January 2021
1 sent home on full pay and told to study, because of lack of patients at local hospital
1 wfh but expecting to work in a few weeks at office but expecting staff cuts
1 no work till next year, works on theatre and film media, self employed
1 works on housing sites site closed down, no start date as houses are not selling, limited mortgages available.
I'm working from home, Wife furloughed, went back then furloughed again. Will be furloughed until Ocotber then redundant. Not too bad as she was on a fixed term, but there are no jobs out there now.
I'm going back on Tuesday, probably part time hours dependent on bookings and enquiries coming in. I was furloughed from the start of April with a week in the office 3 weeks ago to catch up and find out what the hotels planned to do.
Here's hoping that we manage to do some business this year and our partner hotels come out reasonably healthy.
I was supposed to be leaving in March. My new company delayed until July. I asked my old company to furlough me but they said no, we want you to work! So I've done a couple of monster literature reviews from home for them over the last couple of months.
Start my new job next week. Nervous as I'm giving up 12 years at a global company (and all the security that brings) for a small place of around 30 which comes with 1 week notice if I get passed the first 6 months. New contract, 4 days a week not 5 which suits me as I had asked for that anyway.
Wife is at DWP. Seems busy although the UC teams have kicked her team out of the building so she's working from home for the foreseeable.
IM back in the lab from next week
not actually been furloughed, wfh
from next week Im part time wfh & part time lab, but we have to do sjifts, 12-4pm weds & 12-830pm Thur & fri
my contract runs out in 6mths & our funders have said to expect 20% layoffs then
Not been furloughed, out of my job next week.
That's shit Tinas! Are you going to pick up your other career again - TV / Film etc?
Still on furlough and there is rumblings about a minimum of 10 (out of 47) redundancies if/when we go back or the furlough scheme ends. The company are happy to do the top-up deal as it takes a minimum of 3 months to recruit someone for my job (security checks etc) so we're most likely off until October but we are massively reliant on the pubs, restaurants and shops coming back strongly so it's completely out of our hands. If we do go back it will be on minimum hours or top-up pay and only working some days. Thankfully we have a very good contract around shortage of hours plus a really good redundancy package so seeing as I've been there 12 years I'll leave with a year's wages if it comes to the worst. Thankfully they have let us take other jobs while on furlough (they're normally banned) so the savings pot is getting topped up with that too. Well, when I'm not buying stuff due to threads on here anyway!
So not looking good but I have a safety net. The issue will be if a second wave comes in the autumn that puts us back into lockdown as my savings will run out before the jobs market has recovered. If we get to that stage I'll have to move back in with the parents for a bit to save on rent, bills etc. So if everyone could behave and get back to work productively ASAP I'd be very grateful.
We weren't furloughed, but our company was caught by lockdown mid office move and never completed on the new office. Current plan is not to have one and just continue with everyone WFH indefinitely, which is certainly different....
Worked through to end of may been off all June start back next week on new site near meadow hell should last till end of year then who knows ( site engineer building contractor)small firm ,one other furloughed at start of it at just above stw median age (clue in user name)so chances of new job v slim if it goes tits up
Local newspaper just announced a large hotel chain pleased to be re opening then sends staff at one of its large local hotels redundancy notices all out of work it appears.
Furloughed until begining of August, although there is every chance that will be extended. In the automotive manufacturing trade and with our main customers all having a tough time I don't think we'll survive without a round of redundancies.
In the automotive manufacturing trade and with our main customers all having a tough time I don’t think we’ll survive without a round of redundancies.
I'm expecting a new scrapage scheme and VAT cut to be announced any day to boost car sales, it's such a big part of UK manufacturing that they'll have to do something to help it recover.
Been furloughed since 1st april, probably going back Monday 29th, although I haven’t actually been told officially yet.
Glad to still have a job tbh, I have friends who don’t.
Trying to find a way of reducing my hours, 39 is ****ing plenty, I don’t wanna be doing 50+ any more.
Was furloughed at easter, have been back a week now. Am running the night shift instead of days but shows willing, very quiet with redundancies imminent. We do plastic injection moulding and supply motor industry, Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Jaguar, so things not looking to good. Its only the medical and military contracts keeping us going.
I've been furloughed for 6 weeks now. I reckon I could cling on to a job, but I'm not confident that I want to. I'm trying to make an exit sooner rather than later, if I can do so on good terms. I've got a plan but don't want to burn bridges as I reckon there'll be work back in my sector once I find out for sure if my plan is workable!
integra - plastic in my roller? Good god man, that is totally unacceptable.
Unicon hair, whale foreskin, ocelot, mink and burmese teak are the only acceptable materials.
Go away and self-flagellate until breakast.
Our company have been really good - furloughed for three weeks, they put in place a scheme to ask for volunteers to work less hours for a comparative drop in pay to try and avoid the spectre of redundancy. It had a massive take up so fingers crossed.
Lost my job at the end of march, currently running on savings, will be out of work until at least Sept I reckon.
Mrs K going through redundancy now and is looking for a new job. She’ll be paid until the end of August. Furlough probably helped in ensuring we have 3 months more wages in the household than we might have.
they put in place a scheme to ask for volunteers to work less hours for a comparative drop in pay to try and avoid the spectre of redundancy.
We had similar only they just wanted us to take a voluntary 10% paycut.
I offered 20% for a 4 day week.
Never got beyond line management.
they also laid off my counterpart across the desk and gave me his clients.
I cant moan - i still have a job but its incredibly short sighted.
If we both took a 4 day week and assocaited pay cuts- they would have a majority of the savings and retained the necessary skills (although i say counterpart - he has a different skill set to me)
Furloughed since Good Friday - got a teams meeting today about redundancies.
I'm in a pool of 12 - no idea how many they're looking to get rid of.
All a bit shit as we were told at the start it was all about job retention and we'd all be back once furlough ended no matter what.......
We had similar only they just wanted us to take a voluntary 10% paycut.
I offered 20% for a 4 day week.
Never got beyond line management
That sucks and it IS short-sighted, I think. Your offer is what our lot went for, with a lower salary cap. 80% for me would take me below the cap, so I'm on 90% (which matches the cap) and I get a half day off.
Been furloughed for 11 weeks ment to be back in Monday. Company has backlog of 5000 maintenance jobs so should be ok. If not I'd pack up the van and head to Europe for few months and not worry about it for a few months, oh hang on.
That’s shit Tinas! Are you going to pick up your other career again – TV / Film etc?
Not 100% sure yet, Ive been told there are some office days available where I used to work getting cameras/kit out the door for a few jobs that are going ahead. But the jobs themselves are already fully crewed. Better than nothing and a way back in as usually its a case of getting onto a job then moving from one to the next, and there's always rigging/derigging which no-one wants to do.
WFH initially, furloughed from begining of May, early June redundancies announced, consultation running till end of July, will almost certainly be terminated on 31st July. Whole industry (film/TV post production) is doing the same. Woohoo.
Fortunate enough to so far only been given a pay cut, 15%. Same working conditions, but I’m more than thankful to still be in a job.
I’m a contractor and this contract is up until mid Dec. The project initially had an end date of Mar 2021, they’ve now asked us to bring this forward to deliver in October, which will likely mean exit in December. (Scope of the delivery hasn’t changed, just our timescales for testing has been massively crunched)
Worried about the job market next year. I’m only a contractor due to the lack of available permanent jobs when I was looking last year. The market will have shrunk significantly since then.
Had a call from my boss last week, asking if I was available to go back this week, ironically, because my g/f had her first full week off since last October, and things were starting to open up we’d arranged to go down to Salisbury for a picnic with family and a ticketed visit to Bristol Zoo Wildpark!
That was fine, he called this morning, he wants me in next Monday with a full Logistics team, they’ve got busy now, dealers are open and auctions are opening, so it’s straight back in at the deep end!
Was furloughed, now back in full time, and those who were working originally are off to give them a brief free holiday.
Total of 3 out of 12 working now.
Workload picking up slowly.
Come July, looking at everyone being part time (exact percentage unknown) with furlough paying 80% for the rest. I assume this is allowed?
If we are not back to full workload by September things start to get iffy.
I'd be happy with 4 days a week for a pro rata pay cut (down to 3 I could afford short term). A couple of the guys with new houses and new kids may struggle with this though.
Hoping the industry will recover enough to be able to tell them to stuff it if they propose taking a paycut for the same hours.
Whole industry (film/TV post production) is doing the same.
Asking around it does feel like it's passed the peak and things are now starting up again, although I guess post production might be lagging behind a few weeks/months.
I'm hoping it bounces back quite quickly, it should be easier to manage social distancing or other mitigation than a lot of industries.
Really depends on the rest of the economy, as ultimately it's advertising that dictates whether there's a budget to make anything.
Furlough would have been luxury for us! No work, no pay. End of.
I've been back for a month now, having stopped mid March and should be working flat out 7 days a week until end of September or possibly end of October - depending on the weather etc.
I'm sure a lot of companies would take the opportunity to "straighten out any staff problems" they might have....
seems that my wifes company they are working overtime (time in lieu) while still furloughing half their staff.
I started furlough at the start of April and to date I am still on it. The aviation industry is slowly picking up so I’ve been told to expect to return to work at the start of July, to get back to work my company had designed a fly safe training package which all staff members have to sit and we have to provide a negative Covid test result and to be retested on a 6 weekly basis... I’ve been lucky as I’ve been told that my job is safe from redundancies, unfortunately the same can’t be said for all departments at my work as hundreds of employees are receiving at risk letters over the coming days and weeks... Really sad times!
Been WFH for most of it. Just 3 or 4 days actually in work. we furloughed all the at risk staff and closed a couple of sites till lockdown eased. Now busy again and different working patterns. Biggest challenge is getting people back off furlough where they have childcare issues as we really need everyone back now as those who worked through furlough now need a break.
Schools reopening would be helpful on that front but can't see that happening before September. Even then not sure what they are actually doing to set it for September.
So, first two days back on part time flexible furlough after 9 weeks furloughed.
Mostly alright, deleted most of my inbox without reading it, got a couple of new projects going.
definitely an undercurrent of resentment from some of those who weren’t furloughed. Be interesting to see how it pans out.
Self employed. So basically been twiddling my thumbs for the last 2.5-3 months, though started getting proper work in in the last 2/3 weeks or so, so looks like I'll be earning a decent wage for next month at least... Basically covid has made me thousands lighter in the pocket, with bugger all gov help, never qualified for anything, barring broo money, which was 2 payments worth of heehaw. So, been earning next to nothing, while trying to spend as little of the savings I had.
Might get a sustained run here, but who knows, we'll see.
So not technically furloughed, more hung out to dry is how you'd describe it, fingers crossed anyhow going forward.
Least the weather was good! 😆
No furlough here, been WFH since sometime in March. Extremely fortunate compared to a lot of people. I work for a large manufacturer of construction equipment and we're set up for working remotely pretty well in terms of non-production related staff. Production was suspended for 3 weeks but is running OK at the moment.
Pay rises have been frozen and the bonus scheme isn't running next year but I'd take that over losing my job.
Nothing has been mentioned about redundancies yet, it depends how badly the markets we sell into get hit...a good percentage of our product is exported beyond Europe but obviously this is a global issue so who knows!
Son2 is back at Heathrow. Only terminals 2 and 5 open so reasonable passenger footfall. LHR are offering up to a 37% pay cut and loss of conditions. But he is junior and on a new contract which would actually pay him more. He’s hoping to leave soon to go to uni for pilot training.
Been on furlough since march (80% pay), work in a car dealership. Some of our branches are open but not us yet, been told we will be opening "soon" but I've only worked there for just over a year so not very secure if they start looking to reduce staff.
This thread makes for grim reading.
Lots of preemptive redundancies meaning any Gov package is likely to do little to nothing as confidence just isn't there.
We've been pretty fortunate compared to most posting here. Took a temporary pay cut which has now been restored & been working right through. Select roles were put on furlough but all topped up.
Only role specific redundancies happening at the moment and don't hear of any wider cuts planned at this time.
