Evening all,
This may seem petty to some people but the smell etc is horrendous!
I live in second floor flat and the people under me are obviously smokers (heavy), the smell coming up from the flat is disgusting! Our living room, kitchen, hallway and bathroom seriously stink.
While i understand that there has to be a bit of give and take surely i dont have to sit in my own house and just accept the stink! They slam doors aswell, very loudly, tv and music is loud, they came in at 1am the other morning just as i was leaving for work and the music and chat was a tad loud, why the heck should i work to pay for them to be twa## and sit around and sleep all day. I work very early shifts and the slamming and other guff keeps me awake, we have to sit with the windows open which is fine in summer but now the colder nights are in! Brrrrrr!
Im expecting a few mtfu's but also hoping for some advice as to what i can do! Im not kidding..it is like they are smoking in out house..and they are stinking foreign cigarettes.
Help!
take up smoking
move
Dirty protest.
My ggodnewss - people smoking in their own flat - and coming in at 1 am. whatever next!
seriously how on earth is the smell getting into your flat from theirs? there should be no way it can. Ether should be no holes between the two flats. Is it through the windows?
I thought it was illegal for people to smoke in rented flats? Maybe not.
I feel for you but given that people who smoke have absolutely no regard for their own health, their own bodies, their own oxygen system, then it is no surprise that they have no ability to think of others ay? Cancer will be their karma my friend I feel.
You can complain to the local council about this as anti social nuisance. It is a valid complaint.
I know this cause i did it once although Scotland may be different to where you are presuming you ain't up here.
I thought it was illegal for people to smoke in rented flats?
No you can smoke at home, unless you are being burgled, as during the burglary your home is really the burglar's workplace.
TJ
I once lived in a flat above heavy smokers and it always seemed like the smell came up through the floor... it wasn't that you could tell when they'd lit up, just that the place always stank!
edited to chuckle at j_me
Did anyone else read the title as "honky fags" in the american sense?
TJ, yep! My initial thought was that it was something to do with hoglike noises of love!
Same here... thought it was meant to be offensive to start with!
Did anyone else read the title as "honky fags" in the american sense?
Yeah, I was expecting something homophobic.
I feel for you but given that people who smoke have absolutely no regard for their own health, their own bodies, their own oxygen system, then it is no surprise that they have no ability to think of others ay? Cancer will be their karma my friend I feel.
Bit a sweeping statement there. So all smokers have no ability to think of others and you think cancer is their just reward ?
Compassionate sort of guy aren't you ?
I had a similar problem with cigarette smoke for a period of time (fortunately very very short). I spoke to a colleague who is an ex-environmental health officer and he reckoned if the enjoyment of your property is being affected by neighbours speak to the council (after speaking to the neighbours, obviously).
re. noise - ear plugs are great.
Just excessive slamming of the doors count as anti social behaviour.
Compassionate sort of guy aren't you ?
Why should smokers deserve compassion?
It is an older property with a chimney, so im guessing the smell comes through thereb. It does seem like it comes up through the floor aswell.
To be fair tj, unless ur in the situation you wouldn't understand. I start at 1am so go to bed a 8-9pm and when there is all that racket and reek it stops you fom sleeping, and as im driving and dealing with dangerous goods all day i need to be alert. It aint the coming in at 1am it is the noise that goes on after that.
I like a party as much as the next person but every night! Keep it to the weekends please!
We are hoping to move but nowt out there yet! :'(
Im sure they will get theirs one day! Filth habit!
I love threads like this, brings out all the anti smoking facists! 🙄
Tried ear plugs Jon and missed my 1am alarm for work! Ha ha.
Had to scrap that idea.
Are you in a House converstion into flats?
if so find out when the house was converted and see
what building regulations have been complied too and have
been carried out correctly.
Try just one then. You can use the pillow to block the other one, but you still hear your alarm.
Why should smokers deserve compassion?
Just because someone smokes i would not wish cancer on them nor would i make assumptions about their personality. Everyone is different so to make the assumption that all smokers are the same is just bloody stupid to be honest.
Smokers should accept that if they smoke they increase their risk of cancer but that doesn't mean i hope they all get cancer. To do so would be in my mind be extremely cruel ie. not very compassionate, hence my original comment.
No just an old block of flatf built circa 1949, stone walls etc, they have a chimney stack that runs through all the properties so im guessing it is coming through there.
the smell still should not be coming up the chimney. Separate flues for each fireplace - there is something very wrong if it can get thru between flats.
Its not their fault you have to sleep at abnormal hours - I work night shifts so sleep thru the day - if noise annoys me I wear earplugs.
Did anyone else read the title as "honky fags" in the american sense?
Yup, I too was expecting a homophobic rant.
I thought, "excellent, things are really going to kick off on this thread".........you can imagine my disappointment 😐
Still, he made up for it with : "they are stinking foreign cigarettes"........RACIST !!!!
:Pulls up a chair and lights a Gauloises Bleu:
get yourself an oxygen tent
i know that tj, but surely a little bit of respect is not much to ask!
How about i come round and play loud music when ur trying to sleep and blow cigarette smoke through ur letter box?
Racist..no..foreign cigs being stronger than uk makes..yes!
i shared with somebody who dated a girl who smoked some weird brand and they stunk like no other brand of cigarette i have smelt before!
Just weares you down after a while...why should i have to "put up with it".
Why should smokers deserve compassion?
Perhaps because they're human beings?
Buy a leaking fish tank?
Perhaps because they're human beings?
So are drug dealers and murderers..? Not that I'm comparing them to smokers, but feeling for someone just because they're the same species as you seems a bit dumb.
Have you tried speaking to them? Do they even know that they are being a nuisance?
Play bagpipes when they're asleep and if they complain accuse them of racism 🙂
feeling for someone just because they're the same species as you seems a bit dumb.
LOL !
So are drug dealers and murderers..? Not that I'm comparing them to smokers, but feeling for someone just because they're the same species as you seems a bit dumb.

But that's the point, there are smokers and there are smokers. There are murderers and there are murderers eg.
if your family were killed by a person and you then went and exacted revenge by killing that person you are technically a murderer. Do you think you would not deserve compassion ?
that's the problem with making the sort of statements you and the other poster i was responding to made.
Ill buy a leaking fish tank tomorrow! Ha ha.
Good idea epic! Very amusing...made me laugh. Ill go fire up the pipes and play flower of scotland on repeat all night..
Yes i spoke to them the other night tj, english is not they're first language so not sure if they understood the nuisance to be honest.
I was going to write a letter but not sure if that is a bit...well demanding like a ransom letter.
Moving may not be an altogether bad plan. There's nothing worse than the place you call 'home' being an unpleasant place to be, whatever the cause.
Realman - are you for real, man? Why on earth wouldn't you feel compassion for a smoker who, say, came home and found his house burnt to the ground whilst his dog and daughter were in it (assuming an unattended cigarette didn't start the blaze)....
Dirty protest.
Yay! 🙂
I'm in!
Yes i spoke to them the other night tj, english is not they're first language so not sure if they understood the nuisance to be honest.
Scottish people? Yep, they'll never understand.
Their probably cockneys, they tend to be noisy smokers that speak funny
I feel for you but given that people who smoke have absolutely no regard for their own health, their own bodies, their own oxygen system, then it is no surprise that they have no ability to think of others ay? Cancer will be their karma my friend I feel.
What a load of self-righteous bollocks. Do you drive/have you ever driven a car?
Wishing cancer on someone, nice. 🙄
Their probably cockneys, they tend to be noisy smokers that speak funny
(Lights up. Blows smoke in Nutt's face. Laughs like Sid James. Wiggles ample bosom like Babs Windsor. Rattles pearly suit. Sups jellied eels. Talks about the Krays. Makes up rhyming slang to outwit the authorities. Plans a knees-up. Puts Chas and Dave record on the gramophone. Says 'Cor Bimey Guv'nor a lot. [s]Runs out of[/s] gets bored with gratuitous East End stereotypes)
Cancer will be their karma my friend I feel.
Errr... if you can smell the smoke... then cancer, sadly, may also be your karma as well!
you get up at 1am for work and still don't get paid enough to live in your own house? To get up that early, I'd need to get paid a million pounds.
Why on earth wouldn't you feel compassion for a smoker who, say, came home and found his house burnt to the ground whilst his dog and daughter were in it (assuming an unattended cigarette didn't start the blaze)....
That's stupid, obviously anyone would feel compassion for someone in that instance.
I was saying I wouldn't feel compassion for someone who smokes and as a result of the smoking ends up with cancer etc. In the same way I wouldn't feel compassion for a drunk driver who drives off a cliff. Maybe I didn't make that clear.
Would you feel compassion for a mountain biker who crashed his bike and died?
I was saying I wouldn't feel compassion for someone who smokes and as a result of the smoking ends up with cancer etc. In the same way I wouldn't feel compassion for a drunk driver who drives off a cliff. Maybe I didn't make that clear.
And if that someone was a friend of yours would you feel any compassion then or are you never going to have any friends/loved ones who smoke ?
And if that someone was a friend of yours would you feel any compassion then or are you never going to have any friends/loved ones who smoke ?
Some of my friends do smoke. If/when it kills them it will be their fault, although I would miss them.
Would you feel compassion for a mountain biker who crashed his bike and died?
Yes, because IMO mountain biking isn't stupid.
Yes, because IMO mountain biking isn't stupid.
But it's an activity that comes with the risk of serious injury or death.
Interesting how you feel it's ok to pick and choose which activities you consider worthy of compassion, should a person suffer as a result of enjoying them.
Interesting how you feel it's ok to pick and choose which activities you consider worthy of compassion, should a person suffer as a result of enjoying them.
Interesting that peoples emotions come about the way they see the situation? Hardly. I didn't realise everyone had to feel the same about everything.
Mountain biking does come with risk, but it does give you rewards that make it worth it. There are no rewards to smoking or drink diving, or ones too tiny to acknowledge.
There are no rewards to smoking
The outrage of the self-righteous is more than sufficient reward...
I didn't realise everyone had to feel the same about everything.
Quite.
So you only smoke to prove something to other people?
Well, no, you weren't very clear. Also, try drugs. They are very rewarding.....
..... 🙂
No I smoke because I enjoy it.
Strange concept I know.
The fact that sanctimonious types like yourself get worked up about it is an added bonus.
People do stuff that may be bad for them. It's their choice. Not yours. So don't lose sleep over it, eh?
Also, try drugs. They are very rewarding
He's got a point you know. You're a student aren't you? Eeh, when I were your age, I was into all sorts. Acid was the best by far though. Amazing.
You can get face-aids off bad acid.
'Worst' Acid trip I ever did was like being in a Keith Haring painting, but I was with a girl I'd been going out with but had grown to resent. Still, not too bad mind. The best one; was in a field near Dagenham, and the ****ing pylons started dancing. Even though it was pitch black and I couldn't see them. Well mad that one.
Ahh, Ketamine- now that can't be good for you. 😮
Drugs eh? Perhaps Simon shouldn't throw stones from his glass house?
Heh -I was not wishing cancer on anyone - just pointing out that their own actions are likely to get them in the future. Obviously I was grossly generalising, so sorry for that, but there have been many times when I was wound up by smokers near me. Things are one heck of a lot better now at least.
And whatever I get up to in the rainforest is well away from any other inhabitation and also very organic 🙂
I was saying I wouldn't feel compassion for someone who smokes and as a result of the smoking ends up with cancer etc
I would.
Few bad decisions as a youngster puts you in the grip of something terrible.. you struggle to quit and then end up forfeiting your life. Yeah, I would and do feel compassion there.
Never fails to amaze me how many roughty toughty blokes are like delicate little flowers when it comes to a bit of ciggie smoke... Bless.
Cockney midgets are much more annoying... 🙂
I used to get the neighbours' smoke coming through under the joists in my old semi; drove me potty as they seemed to continually smoke and used to resort to leaving the window open all year round. They weren't the type who would have understood a quiet word, so couldn't do much. It only goes when you move, I'm afraid.
brings out all the anti smoking facists!
what like the consultants, doctors and macmillan nurses etc you mean? 🙄
The best one.....
Driving round the grounds of Blenheim Palace at night..... holy **** those gates!!!!.... and the palace!!!..... must've been a hundred miles tall....
Are they tenants? - get in touch with the landlord, it usually does the trick. Might even be worth a bit of exaggeration if you want to get them kicked out - why should you move?
'Honky fags?'
This could have had the makings of an epic thread... 😀
Oh well.
We live in an ex-council semi. We can smell next doors fag smoke though the walls sometimes. (Walls are old style shuttered concrete jobbies - very thick & strong as hell, but quite porous). It drives the Wife mad. But being serious for a moment, what the hell can really be done ? We cant force them not to smoke in their own home. Can also smell when they are cooking, because they deep-fry everything, & I mean everything. Even "roast" spuds go in this machine of artery clogging death.
That aside the old chap has a habit of burping as lod as he can. He must have a bowel condition because he goes off like this every 10 mins or so. And then there is the way he has to go way OTT thwnever he coughs or sneezes.
I keep meaning to investigate if there is some kind of membrane we could install when we redecorate.
Any building experts in ?
teef - MemberAre they tenants? - get in touch with the landlord, it usually does the trick. Might even be worth a bit of exaggeration if you want to get them kicked out - why should you move?
You sound like a nice person.
If you live in a place where someone may be affected by your noise during evenings/nights you should aim to minimise it. It's common courtesy. However if you work shifts then you're less able to complain about noises during the day - most people don't work shifts.
We have neighbours who choose to ruin at least 1 of my relaxing nights a week by playing music pretty loud, loud enough that I can hear it over my TV even with the TV on fairly loud. I've come close to murder twice, but ultimately it means that should I need to be noisy for some reason (party/film on 5.1) I can and they have no grounds for complaint. It still annoys the hell out of me that they are noisy so regularly, it's a complete lack of thought for others.
Also, what's with people slamming doors at night? I mean surely everyone in their house is woken up too? Why not just use your brain and your hand, turn the handle and close it gently - it doesnt take much.
You sound like a nice person.
While I agree that does sound a bit unpleasant, the question is why should the person who is doing nothing to disturb their neighbours be upset by people who do things that are clearly upsetting their neighbours (noisy people, for example). However in this case they may not even know the smell comes up, and probably can't smell themselves anymore anyway.
We had this with our neighbours downstairs, they are Romanian so they smoke strange Euro cigs, there are either too many of them living there or they are having friends round very often so there are a lot of cigs being smoked down there.
We knocked and politely said we could smell the smoke in our flat, is there anything you can do to try and reduce how much comes up the stairs. The next day they put a heavy curtain over their front door to keep the airflow down, and only smoke in the garden in good weather, or in their front room with the door shut. Even when we are out they do it, I came home last night and they were full on leaning out of the window to have a smoke.
They still make loads of noise at times that annoy me, but Im sure I make loads of noise at times that annoy them, that's fair enough as far as I'm concerned.
You sound like a nice person.
You sound like a person whose never had bad neighbours

In a perfect world we would have perfect neighbours, unfortunately it isn't and we don't
I am in full support of the OP dilemma it drives you bonkers when your neighbours are loud and for a non smoker it must be a bit of a mare. However lying to a landlord to get an eviction as suggested above that prompted my comment is so out of line (probably more so than the neighbours being loud and smoking)
teef - MemberYou sound like a person whose never had bad neighbours
If only that were true, I have had some complete shockers in my time, moved to my current house mainly because of 2 bad neighbours. Didn't mean I needed to get revenge though just sorted the situation out myself.

Why should you move - it's the neighbours causing the problem. Where you bullied at school?
rOcKeTdOg - Member"brings out all the anti smoking facists!"

You don't tend to hear them moaning about a few wiffs of tobacco smoke like you do on here.
IThere is this complaint - that people are smoking in their own flat. Repeated complaints about people smoking in beer gardens and on th street
FFS - get a life. I am now an ex smoker and I don't moan about others smnoking!
I still maintain that smoke should not be coming from one flat to another. Think of the smoke / fire risk. Something is badly wrong with the building for this to happen
Nope not bullied at school, well apart from the time I bucked the trend of black shoes and got brown ones instead which were way to out there for the playground.
I had annoying neighbours, they annoyed me by going about their daily business in a loud and unthoughtful way however it is their life and they are entitled to live it how they want to, just like you and I are entitled to do whatever we like (within reason)
I could of kicked off I could of used violence instead I moved to a much nicer area with a much nicer house in the middle of beautiful countryside.
Turns out the annoying neighbours were the catalyst I needed to improve my own life 🙂
'Worst' Acid trip .................... Well mad that one
Cool story.
Few bad decisions as a youngster puts you in the grip of something terrible.. you struggle to quit and then end up forfeiting your life. Yeah, I would and do feel compassion there.
Maybe 20 or more years ago, but not now. The complete foolishness of smoking is made too obvious nowadays in school, from an early age. People only smoke for two reasons, because they think it makes them look cool, or because they're addicted. And they only start for one of those reasons.
