Don't know any free ones, but Pixelmator is cheap, and very good for the price. You can download a free trial from the website.

depends how much functionality you need, but seashore is nicer to use than GIMP

Try getting the new (native) version of GIMP and switch it to single window mode with Windows > Single Window Mode.
