Any recommendations for free easy to manage forum software?

phpbb3 is the default but it is fairly complex to set up if you're not used to it (or even if you are, it's a damn sight more complex than some of hte other options but that is partly because once set up you have a million options to do whatever the hell you want).

The set up for a basic, all access forum is a doddle. It only becomes difficult if you want to restrict access to parts of a forum IMO.

True. But I've yet to come across a forum where some sort of permissions system was not needed, and the phpbb solution seems to be the most complex I've worked with. Once you're used to it it's a doddle, it's just not immediately obvious what route to take to do some things. I'm no web dev but I have worked with joomla/simplemachines, phpbb, e107 and a few others I've forgotten.
