I could really use a resource/package to do this tonight...googledocs and OpenOffice don't.

Any ideas?

google docs works for me. You just need to convert it as you upload, or open it as a docx in google docs (for view only) and then export it as a google document.

Once you've completed the edits, just download it as a Word document again.

There's always the Office trial software if all else fails. If you can find a copy of Office Starter, that could work. It's a free, unlimited cut down version which is meant to be for new PCs - there was a loophole that you could download it from Microsoft but that appears to have been cleared up...

http://www.libreoffice.org

Not sure why OpenOffice doesn't work for you, it should. But LibreOffice is a fork from OpenOffice, long and boring backstory but OpenOffice is really now the choice for people who need support (ie, corporates) and LibreOffice for those who'd prefer a more actively developed product.

Apparently, the original document has "special" formatting 🙄

agree with cougar that open office should open it, but it might not let you save it back to .docx

also give abiword a go, should open it ok at the very least

OK trying LibreOffice, well I will be, once it downloads.

druidh, if I'm wrong you'll be able to get googledocs to work then?

When you say "it doesn't work", what do you mean?

How about this, then?

I mean all of openoffice, libreoffice and googledocs open the doc but the formatting is all over the place.

it's a job app, so I can't have it looking shit, and am now completing by hand...

It's not Word 2007, it's an earlier version.
When exporting it from email to GDocs, it loses all formatting.

I've got 2010 here if that helps. If you fire it across I could try saving it in another format to see if that preserves the formatting for you

Tried that. The original document has been created using "Boxes" with text in rather than table cells. In places, these boxes overlap with other boxes. There is some "hidden" text and there are various other poor formatting choices....

Two people have offered to convert it for you and I've pointed you in the direction of a time-limited trial version of Office 2010.

Are neither of those options acceptable?

try this, never used it but might work or eat all your private data and sell it to somebody in Yemen

i think the formatting is probably non standard exported from some shite application/website though and your efforts will be futile

maybe
