I thought it was just that the Merlin was broken and they had a spare DB605?

quite funny really....especially when you think of the Hispano Bouchon which is basically a licence built Me-109 was fitted with a merlin engine (the 109's used in the BoB film are Bouchons and can be spotted by the distinctive chin cowling)
a bit like this in reverse...

And the Avia S109 fitted with a Jumo 211 (a different WW2 German engine) built by the Czechs between 1946 and 1948, most notably used by the emerging Israeli Air Force.
