Really.... FFS you two need to have a holiday somewhere.

I'm still keen to hear how facebook is now easily searchable to find updates from the STW staff like you were suggesting Drac, I'm much happier that the message seems to have finally got through that posting in the forum is the place to update users about whats going on.

What is still a little frustrating is the number of things that are making it through as bugs and not getting caught at the testing stage - like not knowing the cookie thing was going to be a major ball ache

Lets hope that now the big stuff is done (??) they can get some of those useful features back up and running.

problem with that there facebook for discussion is if you miss something it’s off there and lost for a while with no real way of searching for it

You can search Facebook Mike it’s extremely easy, there’s also a search BETA option for the forum for people to test.

What do I put in to search for STW Forum Update Drac, not being an arse but it’s not that simple –

TBH. I'm interested because I find it bloody difficult to search facebook groups for old posts 😉

Scotroutes beat me to it, but if that wasn't what you said or meant to say then care to elaborate? Actually I don't really care. We have an actual sign of progress with the STW Devs returning to post updates which is a win.

Right.

I'm going through my bug list to submit to STW.  I had a very long list, but a lot seems to have been quietly fixed without anyone noticing.  Eg, we now have a working (beta) search, the classifieds are no longer bumpable and so forth.  So I'm looking at major bugs / feature requests still outstanding.  This is what I've got:

Issues:

Some users unable to log in following the server migration without using the workarounds discussed earlier on this thread. This is being addressed on Monday.

Spurious markup in the Editor. Smileys and underline in editor. Full-screen smileys.

Post preview isn't an accurate representation of the post results.

Long-standing logout issues for some users (predating the site upgrade).

Old posts having the OP several posts down from the top.

New threads created from the combined index disappear if you don't specify a target forum.

Posting occasionally gives "ERROR: Are you sure you wanted to do that?" and fails to post. (It's rare and I've not really seen this being reported - is it just me that this happens to?)

Requests:

Member history improved.

Post freshness showing last user posted.

Better notification of unread PMs.

Show forum links at the bottom of threads.

RSS feeds.

My full list is longer than this and includes things I've noticed / want to suggest which people haven't really mentioned.  Note that at this point I'm not concerned with anything that's browser- or OS-specific, I'm looking at site-wide stuff.  I've also dropped a bunch of stuff that was reported weeks ago if I'm not sure what's still current.

Is there anything important site-wide that I've overlooked?

EDIT: It’d be really useful if folk specify desktop / mobile sites if an issue / feature is relevant to one but not the other.

Is this possibly attempted double-posting due to the lack of feedback/time delay when hitting the Submit button?

Either way, I'd add that to the list somewhere.

Oh - thought if another one...

The pop-up dialogue box when posting an image is too wide for my Android/Chrome mobile.

If you hit link on Android Chrome is there an easy way to cancel it? It has just been going mad for me if I catch it by accident, last time I tried the post Pic box spanned outside of the portrait dimension and you have to rotate to cancel it

Site wide UX - the next page forum is below the new thread box - guessing the navigate pages is used a lot more than create new post.

A guide for some of the less intuitive features - for example discovered by luck that you don't need to highlight the text block to quote it, pic posting is easy to post links in the text box so what does the new post image button do over that?

Assume Improve Member History is heading back to what was there before?

Is that a mobile issue?  The Submit button "clicks" when you press it on the full-fat site.

Is that a site-wide (mobile) issue?  Are iDevice users seeing the same thing?

Does 'favourites' work for anyone?

I'm not sure if this is what you mean by member history, but the one most significant difference between this forum now, and how it was a year ago, for me, is that I can't just go to a page listing the threads on which I've posted, and easily see what her there's been any activity there since I last looked. The current option to see a list of my own replies is completely useless by comparison.

That's not meant as a whinge at all, and I totally understand that loads of work has happened and lots of things may be improved both visibly and behind the scenes, but for me, this is the killer. I don't mind how it's presented, but some way of seeing threads in which you've indicated an interest, and seeing whether something new has happened there, is a massive boost to usability.

I'm sure that will be discovered when the team test it on the Idevices and Android devices they are using for testing

If that isn't happening that it could explain what is going wrong, what platforms or devices are the team short of/not got one of?

Regarding logging in on Android  I'm magically logged in on my Android phone now. I didn't try to log in... but somehow I am! Maybe they fixed something...?

I'll make a note of it.  I expect part of the challenge here is that writing such things whilst the forum is under heavy development means it's one more thing to keep up to date as stuff is changed.

Assume Improve Member History is heading back to what was there before?

Your assumption is as good as mine.  I understand that's what you guys are asking for though.

Front Forum Summary page you get new post box and then the page numbers Chrome/Windows & Chrome/Android for it to be there it's been put there by design.

As for instructions posting pics, vids and emoji's hasn't changed - As I suggested before pin it in a sticky thread and you guys will spend less time posting the same answers over and over again.

Forum/Post History if somebody has a bright idea that would be better then perhaps they need to post some previews for comment - again if lots of people are asking for one thing then it makes sense that it works. No need to reinvent the wheel here.

Thanks for feeding these back, it takes effort to do all of this but it feels a bit neglected if there isn't a reply to it to say if any of it is happening. The engagement from Mark etc. has helped recently,

Front Forum Summary page

Ah!  I see what you mean.  It's the other way around on the individual forum indices, so is at best inconsistent.

I previously suggested that STW provide access to a testbed system to a small group of users with a range of device/OS/browsers so that the testing is wider.

A guide for some of the less intuitive features

I've just had an idea here.

The big challenge is to create comprehensive documentation and keep it current as the site evolves.  No-one's going to do that any time soon, the dev team don't have the time and the mod team don't have the inclination.

How about instead, if I create a "Forum Tricks and Tips" thread?  People can submit ideas (eg "alt-shift-D gives you Strikeout"), and I'll periodically collate the discussion back up into the OP.  Maybe it can also be a place for "how do I...?" questions, even?

Thoughts?

Just been thinking this over...

It's an out the box, off the shelf forum editor - right?

The documentation should be as simple as cut and paste with some tweaks from the documentation supplied by the people who wrote it.

If it doesn't work like it's designed to then it's a bug.

If not we appear to be rapidly heading down the patch on patch route which got us here in the first place.

If the Editor is crap then don't use it as the base.

How about instead, if I create a “Forum Tricks and Tips” thread?  People can submit ideas (eg “alt-shift-D gives you Strikeout”), and I’ll periodically collate the discussion back up into the OP.  Maybe it can also be a place for “how do I…?” questions, even?

Just add the ones you know works, perhaps a line to report if something doesn't work any more.

Not much use if you run silent

I* also have an issue when attempting to navigate around using an andriod phone - some links / buttons take several goes to make them work and there is no indication that it has worked

that could well be me tho

I meant it clicks graphically, not audibly.

Seems there's a general issue around button feedback on the Mobile site then.  I'll add it to the list.

maybe this doesn't fit the remit but chrome/android/mobile, if you hit the link button it goes in to some crazy cycle of popping up the link window, the keyboard, then closing both. repeat.

Hold that thought for now.  I'm going to at least try and collate a separate platform-specific list later.

I really should use the mobile site more, it'd be a lot of help in these discussions.

@Cougar - Just to check as it might be lost in the page number refresh weirdness - did my last post on page 105 makes sense in terms of where it's heading?

Oh and page numbers/count not really working

Oooh, i just tried hitting the link button (Samsung tablet on SwiftKey), does the same thing with the keyboard flashing on and off.

It's looking like it's a lot better than it was, though, things are looking up. 😊

Also  no feedback on the submit button here, either.
