Just cancelled mine, that stupid floating magazine banner thing was the last straw.
If clicking an X is too much for you, I hate to think how you cope with the rest of your life. Must be really tough.
>If clicking an X is too much for you, I hate to think how you cope with the rest of your life.
If they're going to have an annoying website which I can use for free, why bother paying for it? It's fairly obvious they only care about passing trade and Ad revenue and not paying subscribers / members, so I'll take the hint and stop paying. Pretty simple really.
That’s not a feature of the forum not what I can see? probably a dodgy plugin.
I think that's when you want to leave a comment on a story rather than this forum
I'm having to log back in pretty frequently, too. So you're not alone, Boriselbrus.
That chuffing upscroll “buy Singletrack now” is a crock of shite when viewing via a phone.
Especially a crock of shite when you clearly already pay for the bloody mag. No ADS means NO ADS. Thank you.
And ffs fix the copy and paste. Or maybe fix the busted/lost functions BEFORE adding any more unwanted annoying crap? How nice would that be? "smileyface"
😲

which reminds me, I need to work a bit more on the remote font blocking. I made the Montserrat go away, but all the emojis and handy post icons went too.
If you have a means of injecting code client side, then use:
body {
font-family: "Verdana" !important;
}
Which is what the Chrome extension I'm using does - you can pick the font you like, but Verdana seems nice enough (and definitely preferable to Montserrat).

@Boriselbrus – the logged in/out behaviour is part of WordPress not this site per se.
It's based on WP functionality, but like so much else on this site based on WP (actually BBP for what difference that makes), they've managed to break it. Though as discussed upthread, there's no real benefit to having cookies expire and logging people out at all.
Oh and only every 24hrs once you cancel the please buy 2 copies of the mag? Well it's back sooner than expected last had to cancel this morning (on this device which means I've had to cancel it 4 times today on different devices) so is the timer off.
And I'm never going to buy 2 copies of the mag.
maybe fix the busted/lost functions BEFORE adding any more unwanted annoying crap?
THIS- shall i repeat it every 24 hours ?

<span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">@couger/drac Yes mark got a chuck of “feedback” when he showed up and told everyone that it was all going according to plan and exactly as he expected – the “feedback” for that should have been expected.</span>
This. I wrote something very similar but a bit more rude last night which I then deleted - the thing is it's a bit disingenuous to complain about the reception Mark got to his feedback, when the feedback he's giving appears to be ignoring people's concerns. I'm reminded of the good news/bad news sketch in The Office...
Edit due to ****ed up formatting tags - not to remove them, but to point out that I'm deliberately leaving them for effect (and yes I am quoting using the extension, but it looks fine in the edit box and sometimes works fine, so it's your code which is broken not mine).

Yeah, but adding more annoying unwanted crap probably appears superficially to help with their revenue streams - I can understand why that is their priority when heads are so firmly buried in the sand regarding the business impact of a forum which is a bit rubbish.
The business impact will become more apparent as subscriptions end and aren't renewed.

I think that means we will get more ads for all in an attempt to get us to buy 3 copies of the mag, perhaps if I post a pic of me with mine it might help
I've just been on MTBR. It's just so refreshing going to a forum that doesn't bounce around all over the place with mad pop up adverts and funky effects. And it's fast.
Oh yes - the "Please Buy The Magazine" pop-up ad is back, despite me having closed it previously. Is this getting reset daily or something?
If I sign up for one of the Facebook groups and ask there am I more likely to get an answer? What a bizarre way to run a business function.
THIS- shall i repeat it every 24 hours ?
Maybe you could make it slide up the page every time you scroll down?
and yes the bl00dy annoying sliding pop up telling me to buy a mag is back after 24hrs
this forum is an unpleasant experience - for a variety of reasons all stated up there

<div class="bbp-reply-content">Let’s not revise history now, the search function was always shite.
I’ve got to say I never found it shit atall. A bit slow to update maybe (it would miss what was posted in the last few hours) but you could use the advanced function and do….well, forum type stuff. Choose which section, or all to search in. Choose how far back to look. Choose to search in the body or just the title. Choose to search for some or all of the words in the string. The search for posts only by particular users never worked but everything else pretty much did.
</div>
I must have been doing something very inept or wrong! The old search function never worked for me the way you described at all. I agree that those options existed, and I did try to use them, they just never delivered any results! 🙂
My own personal perspective - I've been a forum user for 10yrs+, predominatly read posts as opposed to create new ones and have consistently looked at the forums at least once every 3 days or so for a mix of gaining useful bike knowledge and the humour that sometimes emerges from posts. That pattern of behaviour has certainly changed for me in the past couple of months. Just viewing the forum is generally an unpleasant experience - slow, pop ups for dodgy adverts on my phone, clunky posting from my phone / sometimes the response is completely 'lost' once clicked on submit etc.
The result is that I'm now using MTBR forums more than STW, I can't imagine that I'm the only one. Not trying for this to be a doom and gloom post but highlighting that the lower quality of functionality here is changing my pattern of behaviour and I'm floating across to other websites / forums.
Remember that Fast Show character who always brought home the wrong shopping..?
Hey web dev, have you fixed the copy and paste?
Er, no. Even better than that! I've made a pop up to remind all the visitors to the site to buy the mag!
Facepalm.
Do you think new people have been hired?
In my trade there are lots of small companies we buy from . They are run by passionate people who started the company and care about their product.
They get fairly successful and then the smarmy men in suits arrive. The earth is promised, the product has all the interesting features knocked off and then the holy grail is reached....Smarmy apprentice wannabe has got the company a little stand in a ****ing garden centre.
“Ooh look what I’ve done, your bland crap product is now seen by loads of boring people with nothing better to do.”
Yeah ,it’s sale or return and you won’t get paid for 6 months. Still, it’s in a garden centre.
Meanwhile all the independent shops that helped build the product and pays full whack finds out that it’s sold cheaper elsewhere and drops the product.
Being seen in a garden centre by lots of people is not a barometer of success.
TBH. I find the site ok now. The pop ups are a worry though as no doubt they will increase as viewers fall.
Just creating a case study for work, using STW as an example of how perceived wants/needs for feature and platform improvements can end up monumentally messing up the UX and user happiness.
This thread is a goldmine of User feedback
Last time I did this I used STW as an example of how a constant evolution of small changes had led to highly usable platform with a vibrant community that had managed to balance the 'perceived wants' for features with an actual need to keep it simple.
It was actually the small things that made the previous version quite nice, small things like a 'roll over' that showed a user who the last posted was and when, this saved time effort and frustration by allowing users to make a decision whether our not to go further. A totally basic WYSIWYG box that kept formatting simple but then in turn kept the styling simple so the UX was extremely consistent (not many forums do this).
I quite liked the Scorpio.
I’m thinking this is a nice image to illustrate how it can go wrong. (can’t think of a bike one
It’s certainly done that but not in the way you were expecting.
It looks like one of those Pickacho Japanese Dolls to me..
😷😷😷😷
It's like it want to make a point for me!
3 edits to remove erroneous markup and the only way to solve it was to delete everything but the text.
The WYSIWYG editor is totally crap, it offers no improvement over the last one, it causes issues and there is ' probably' no reason why the previous one couldn't have been used. Apart from somebody somewhere thought this one was shiny'er and some new 'great' features such as Emoji's
and there is a post on the front page from 9 hours ago but we're busier than ever la, la, la.

Posting images is easy though.

People are just arriving at work give them chance to look and tell everyone how busy they will be today.
Yes it is.

Anyone who claims that the forum is busier than ever go needs to work for the POTUS. When something is patented not true it does make you look a bit silly to say it.
I mean I'm sure the people saying it's busier could dig out the posts made last week and the same week last year for a comparison. Unless all of STW are big Juve or Real fans last night was very quiet, and most lunchtimes and mornings... Part of that for me is being unable to find posts that have dropped off or see if anyone has replied to them, but I think I'm going to order a magazine, yes, it will look good with the other one.
FFS!
Stop with all the 'floating' banners and the flashing sh*te, over there >.
And VEE TIRE. Lean to spell!
I've tried a couple of times to reply to posts, but I can't be arsed anymore. Copy and paste should be simple, the top of the page '^' should be below the thread not buried in the corner.
It really is shocking for 2018.
And as for the magazine home page - I'm lost for words.

It is though.
I've just noticed that the words "enter your search..." appear, in white, over the black Singletrack logo at the top of the page when refreshing (Android / Chrome). 🤐

Just checked on my iPhone I don’t have but do have some weird black bar at the top.

To be fair, if it worked properly everybody would be singing its praises, and I'm sure there are plenty of forums out there implementing it properly (it's not exactly rocket science to fix the issues - I could probably do it client side if I could be bothered, but then I have more important things to do like implementing pop ups 😈 - seriously that is exactly what I'm working on at the moment, though mine are supposed to be non irritating!)
Every page I open has a wee animation of
SINGLETRACK ISSUE 117 OUT NOW
Falling down the last wee bit of page over a second or two.
Can you guys please just show a little bit of competence? My forehead is getting sore from all the facepalming.
That's an error.
It's supposed to be issue 118
It is though.
The number of posts full of HTML formatting tells a very different story, unless we are playing the semantic game and the act of Ctr C Ctr V is working as expected your missing the point.

No I’m not.
Still seems to the odd one that yes has html code in but it’s not every post like it was and still seems to be when people copy the username into the text.

Ok lets see what that does.
>Can you guys please just show a little bit of competence?
I think this is all completely intentional. The just want random viewers, who come across STW to see their ads. Pissing off forum posters/subscribers is considered collateral damage and totally fine.
Well that worked I’ll try on Chrome in a bit.

Also if you quote something from a newspaper/tv source, anything that has even unseen formatting etc. As the username thing is happening a lot is anybody actually looking at it?

It does now seem to be coping with stuff from this forum at least now.
