Cougar, I understand that, hence why I said it’s ‘hard’. I’m not a computer person, I expect to press the button and get the result, Sinkholes and foundations now.... I have a Masters in that 😀.

I’m sticking around and have a reasonable degree of confidence that it will come good, but it really is properly crap currently, and seems to have been for quite a few weeks.

I would also second those who have said that you as mods (well all apart from Colin at least..) do a cracking job for minimal thanks, so well done for doing it !

And not a moan but the pop up ad from stw appears and goes way too fast on my mobile to kill it (hence appears on all threads ) chrome latest, android 8.1 portrait mode...

Can the p's have some tick boxes for less of the shite, much less of the shite, I buy it all already and  none of the shite adverts for stw displayed?

And we don’t have to, but I can see both sides of the coin here; Mark posts and he gets mauled

Was this during the 2011 upgrade?

I'm finding all this quite interesting (and a little perplexing).

I'm a long-time subscriber, so never had to deal with the reported pop-up craziness of the old forum.

I guess I'm also quite atypical in that I usually access the site from a desktop computer or laptop, and use a minority browser (Vivaldi) on a minority OS (Linux). Although at work it's Windows and Chrome with very little difference.

Apart from the odd slowdown, I've seen no huge issues in the changeover. I rarely used the search, or my own post history, or wanted to jump to the newest post, so issues with those have passed me by. My user experience has barely changed other than the look of the place (and I actually prefer the new layout, etc.).

When I do access the site on a mobile device (Android phone/tablet running Chrome) I've still seen very little disruption and encountered nothing that makes the place unusable in any way.

The only thing that winds me up is the random logging out and subsequent need to log in that seems to have persisted from the old site to the new...

As I said, this thread confuses, amuses, and saddens me in equal measure...

It may well be unintentional behaviour, or an experiment. (I don’t know.)

Its more ore like a primary school keep d homework after they’ve discovered word art and PowerPoint animations for the first time.

Oh ffs. Why is autocorrect still so shite on this website, and this website alone?

@colournoise - the logging out isn't random, it's completely consistent and predictable. It works on a per device/browser basis. It's 48hrs if you don't check the "remember me" box and 14 days if you do.

Autocorrect/auto suggest is working for me on iPad.

Site is still loading much slower than it used to, glacially at times, for me at least.

Was the 2011 update the one where Mark said he'd eat his shorts if it didn't happen...and it didn't happen and he didn't eat his shorts? Might have been a hat, I don't recall the object, just that both didn't happen...

Site speed is very variable for me, sometimes it's quick (but not as quick as the old forum), other times it's glacial and when it does load you then have to wait further while the ads rearrange the page before you can be reasonably sure that you will click on the right thread. 😉

Minor point... I keep getting a up box thing telling me to buy the mag for £5.99, despite the fact i'm a P and get to download it as part of my membership ?

Still a bit slow for me, but much better. The general look is fine, the only thing (and it's very minor) is the location of the next page controls on the thread list.

It's below the 'Start new thread' box. Given that most people, most of the time, just want to go to page 2, I think it should be above the 'Start new thread' box. But not a major problem.

(The new issue pop up is a bit annoying.)

A thought on the logging out problem.

Is there a WP plugin that shows the length of time left before you get logged out? It's a bit much to expect users to find and read the cookie themselves. Allied to this you could have a "refresh my login" button so that people didn't get logged out in the midst of composing a post.

Three things for me:-

The speed of the site in general and the odd 5 sec + pause between pressing the post button anything happening.

The reduced search functionality in comparision to the old version.

The replacement of a proper post history with details of a response with the current daft list of your replies with no thread title and no details about if there has been further responses.

Without those three improving soon (and an update explaining that these are issues that they are aware of and are working on sooner) the forum will be a dustbowl in 6 months. But maybe that's no biggie for STW - providing a place for middle aged men to bicker is probably not a money maker and if the traffic to the content of the rest of the site is marred by the reputation of the inbreds maybe it will be a positive thing.

True the search was rubbish, as somebody showed you can implement an off the shelf google one that just works.

@couger/drac Yes mark got a chuck of "feedback" when he showed up and told everyone that it was all going according to plan and exactly as he expected - the "feedback" for that should have been expected. He now has a closed thread to post without any chance of reply, if that isn't going to work with his diplomatic style then use one of the journalists sat near him to craft a more suitible update/engagement bit.

In terms of customer engagement... popups, look at me links, shouty flashy things - if people are not clicking on the stuff that is there already from the forum maybe they don't want to? Is there a monetary benefit from a P member clicking a news story?

I've got to say I never found it shit atall. A bit slow to update maybe (it would miss what was posted in the last few hours) but you could use the advanced function and do....well, forum type stuff. Choose which section, or all to search in. Choose how far back to look. Choose to search in the body or just the title. Choose to search for some or all of the words in the string. The search for posts only by particular users never worked but everything else pretty much did.

nuked the slide in with a popular browser add-on beginning with "u"

just a cosmetic filter for now - had intended on making the .js never load (might work on that later)

which reminds me, I need to work a bit more on the remote font blocking. I made the Montserrat go away, but all the emojis and handy post icons went too.

I'm have a paid up sub, so I don't think I need to be reminded on every page that the mag is in stores now in a country in which I do not live 😉

And another thing....

That pop and (which I completely agree is utterly pointless and annoying for paid members) also gives some dodgy floating text for me. It drifts over the forum posts until the pop-up is closed. Chrome on android btw.

Thanks, I was going to type that but you've saved me the trouble!

Really considering getting rid of the P now, and the site without it is not a place I'd visit other than to make use of the classifieds occasionally.

Really hope that you get it sorted out chaps, I'd miss this place.

The log out thing is NOT 2 weeks if you click remember me and 48hrs if you don't.

It randomly logs me out during sessions, sometimes several times a session. Last night I was typing away when I got logged out and the site redirected. Last week it did it on the shop computer less than 10mins after logging in with the catastrophic redirect to porn in front of a customer.

Same for me- I get logged out if I use a different device.

The autocorrect is only a semi-shambles on this (Samsung S7 Android nougat) but it doesn't seem as bad some people's posts! Mostly just deleting letters if I use an apostrophe

This is by far my favourite bit of the new forum

Who actually thought that listing some HTML tags and attributes was a replacement for a text editor? It's 2018 FFS  🙂

Is that the Chrome App version? Looks more usable 😉 Don't get any of that here, perhaps that explains it we each have a browser and hardware specific version

Agree with all of that, apart from the logging out, which doesn’t happen that often for me, and isn’t that much of a chore anyway. That screenshot that scotroutes posted is something I just don’t recognise on the forum now, under the text box all I can see is a lower-case ‘p’, which doesn’t seem to do anything. One thing that is missing from the header bar on the reply box is a strike-through function, bold, italic and <span style="text-decoration: underline;">underscore </span>are there, but I want strike-through back, please.

Mostly, though, things seem to be fairly settled, or at least I’ve got used to a different way of using functions, the line-space when tapping return is irritating, because the new line for some reason won’t automatically start with a cap, and if the word has an apostrophe in that gets left out as well, but those are fairly minor. I do like the fact that I can just paste a photo url in and it appears is much easier.

Pop-ups, etc, just don’t seem to happen, apart from the occasional STW subscription ad, and I don’t have any issues with that.

This is a weird one. The current page for this thread is 77, but on the overview the latest one that shows is 76. So you have to click the 76, and once in the thread, click the 77 which then shows.

And scotroutes, I think that version is specific to you. Doesn't look like that on any of my PCs, phones or tablets.

@Boriselbrus - the logged in/out behaviour is part of WordPress not this site per se.

If you log in on different devices or browsers then each will have its own time in the future when to log you out. If you log in to the site and then on the same device and browser you are logged out before the 2/14 days is up then that is a genuine problem.

I had to log in on my iPad this morning to type the message you quoted, I clicked the "remember me" box so at around 0630 in two weeks I'll get logged out on that device. I'll be logged out on the machine I'm typing this on earlier because I logged back in some time last week on it - just checked the cookie and it will be on the 24th April.
