I really don't want to sound like a smart arse but this place is crawling with <span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">IT whallas of various flavours. What would happen if we (I'm afraid I'm one of them) implemented something that needed this much remedial action to correct post launch? I know there's only so much that can be done in parallel and/or testing but it doesn't look like that much has been picked up. It looks more like the chuck it in, see what happens and remediate approach has been used.</span>

Great, thanks...

<edit> what is that formatting bullshine above? Strangely, I didn't put it in...

<edit2> why has performance suddenly become an issue with the host? Has traffic massively increased causing the issue or is the overhead of the new causing it? No pre-launch performance testing then...?

@simondbarnes - I tried on my tablet (iPad) last night and get pale blue thread titles in both portrait and landscape.

@boblo - see Cougar's post two above yours about the speed. The HTML tags appearing in posts did occur when people copied and pasted a post and included the user name and membership status, it didn't happen if you just copied the actual post. What device, platform and browser are you using? Any add-ons? There'll be a mis-match somewhere.

It's really quite messed up today.

Where shall we start:

- I'm logged in, I'm a "Premium" member but still getting adverts. Or maybe I'm not a P member anymore - in the old forum it was easy to find out, this one I can't find it anywhere. Who knows.

- The adverts are on top of the content

- The text at the top is just completely messed up.

- Oh, and "Favorite" ?

Firefox 59.0b11, on Linux x86-64.

Messed up in the head

@Whitestone I'm using Android on a tablet, no cut and paste just keying stuff in.

I saw the point about moving hosts. My question was, performance was fine before the change so is the performance hit to do with a miraculous coincidental increase in traffic or related to the change? I'm assuming the latter, so what testing was carried out pre-launch to ensure the site was/is performant post launch? That's probably a rhetorical question as I think I know the answer...

Oh, and Google flavoured jam tomorrow might be a future fix but any migration is likely to bring another load of issues hitherto unseen...

If you are listening to feedback then, this forum software is the most unintuitive, least user friendly load of cack I've ever had the misfortune to use

I was one of the few that would have liked to have updated the old forum to include some of the functionality of other forums that I participate in.

I remember thinking the only thing the old forum had going for it (compared to other fora) was the well sized and obvious "back to top" button.

Well at least posting youtube videos is easy.

I keep hoping I'm going to wake up and realise that this was all a dream inspired by Mel Brooks' "The Producers". Telling us that STW has seen its busiest day since a couple of weeks ago is hardly confidence inspiring...

They couldn't fix the old one. It was borked. The new one is being fixed. It's getting better all the time. The owner has listened to criticism and made changes.

Some of us quite like a moan.  ☺

How was it broken?

The new one is being fixed. It’s getting better all the time.

It's an exercise in turd polishing.

Some of us quite like a moan.

Absolutely, and after my offer to share, for free, a successful business model that didn't include spamming its users with seizure inducing ads was completely ignored, I get to moan completely guilt free even though I'm not a subscriber.

Image result for big grin

Well the log out/log back in again seems to be working just as it did before the new version of the forum..

I quite like the familiarity..

@sbob - I thought the "seizure inducing" claim was hyperbole … but was just logged out and experienced the Aaronsbikes premier partner banner … holey moley!

Spoiler contains the ad…

Cheers. Maybe it's my tablet switching to the desktop site when I rotate it? Seems silly having different colour text for desktop and mobile, especially when it appears that blue text is difficult for colour blind people to read.

Oh and Aaron's bikes can go **** themselves.

I was going to log in last night (first time in over a month) to change my card details/make sure it didn't auto-renew my subscription.  The first thing I saw was Cougars response to the Tumbleweed thread. I guess that helped clear up any lingering doubts.

It's a complete shambles. The one place you don't want to bluff your way through a failed IT implementation is on this forum. With the thousands of man-years of experience available, you'd have thought that would be understood. I'm pretty sure everyone I've ever had to manage a change for thought that they were "special" and the normal rules didn't apply. If it had been done properly then there wouldn't have been any need to work ridiculously long hours either as the pain would mostly have been experienced away from the live environment. The current impression is that someone is just pushing buttons and hoping for the right result.

But that's not why I'm ending my subscription. What this change has helped highlight is that the forum is really just here to prop up the mag. I've long championed the Premier payment as a means of showing my appreciation of the forum. What's now obvious is that the forum members are simply being used a resource. Advertisers pay to access us and our (sometimes inane) witterings are also used to attract, via Facebook etc, other folk to the site where they pay to see the content. In effect, we are here to provide free content to STW. That being the case, I don't see that I should also pay to keep the otherwise-failing magazine afloat.

Nope - the only thing I can edit there is my delivery address. Maybe because I have a print sub so things work differently and I have to phone up (though in which case ISTM that's one of the things which most needs fixing if it's possible to do with a digital sub but not a print sub)?

@dumbbot Forum Help hasn't been updated since the new forum was released, I guess it's low priority, though it's another thing which could have been done ready to go before the release (at least for the things they'd already tested and were ready to roll at that point...)

Something else?
If you’re getting in touch about your subscription please give us as much information as possible.

Subscription Number (if you have one)
Subscriber’s name
Your delivery address, including postcode
Email address (especially if you paid online)
Website log-in / user name
subs@singletrackworld.com – 01706 814397

It’ll be a shame you wish to cancel your subscription but if you still feel the need to then you can do so by using those details.

Sure there's nothing dodgy about this new database? I mean,

1/ there's a Bike Forum thread showing in the Chat list.

2/ I've posted twice over the past few days in a "long running" thread and the posts have disappeared.

3/ Clicking "Reply" under any of my Replies Created, just takes me back to the top of Replies Created.

The first thing I saw was Cougars response to the Tumbleweed thread

Which Tumbleweed thread is that then?

It can't possibly be the one that was last posted in by Cougar 16 hours ago because that would be clearly visible on page 2 of the Chat forum......except it mysteriously  isn't.

Dissention will not be tolerated. 😉

Edit: It's hidden in the bike forum  but with a chat icon. How odd.

It's because that when they try and move a thread to a different forum it currently only changes the icon and doesn't actually move the thread.

https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/tumbleweed/

The first rule of Tumbleweed Thread is: you do not talk about Tumbleweed Thread.

The second rule of Tumbleweed Thread is: you DO NOT talk about Tumbleweed Thread!

Third rule of Tumbleweed Thread: if someone yells “report post!”, goes limp, or taps out, the thread is over.

Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight in a Tumbleweed thread.

If this is your first read of Tumbleweed Thread, you HAVE to post

....except you can't. It's been closed to new replies.

Apologies if mentioned before, but I'm not looking through 2,800 posts!

The light blue text in the forum index...admittedly I'm on a fairly cheap and unimpressive Chromebook display, but I keep finding myself trying to adjust the laptop screen tilt or hit the increase brightness button.

Can we have a stronger/bolder colour please 🙂 (I'm talking dark blue, not orange!)

Scotroutes - that has always been the case that the forum is the bit that makes the money for STW.  Mark said as much years ago.

We create the content that pays the wages of at STW towers - everything else is loss making hence the totally OTT adverts and still no solution to the hijacks / malware on mobile devices.  The reduction in traffic on the forum must surely be causing sleepless nights.

Except that I think Mark said the traffic is actually going up (or was the highest since some day in January).

Well without the data can only take his word for it, but you've no idea if that day in January is representative.

The one thing I don't understand its not just the forum but the branding seems ****ed, surely there were meetings about forum colours and the font needing to be usable and also fit in with the brand, but instead it just seems so random and make it up on the fly.

As for the increased content on the main pages, have I missed something, but there seems nothing extra from the norm.

Mark claims all this had been planned, but from the outside looking in it looks shambolic.

Dunno. You can create a new topic by scrolling to the bottom of the page though.

i have no idea why I received it but felt compelled to drop in and report it?

Could you forward that to me please?  Email in profile.  Ta.

It’s because that when they try and move a thread to a different forum it currently only changes the icon and doesn’t actually move the thread.

This should now be fixed.  Yell if you see it again.

Whenever Sky have even a hint of flash photography in a report they read out a warning so they don't get sued by epilepsy sufferers. This site now needs such a warning, and if you're reading this Aaaron, I'm talking mainly about you.

Possible though like any forum it depends on its users providing content. If it did die I wouldn't move to the FB group.

Just spotted an odd bit of code, containing the word data, in the posting box. It was there, then disappeared before I could get a screen shot.
