Why is the forum now loading in one font then changing to a different one? That's with all of Firefox, Chrome and Edge on Win 10.
Facebook for 'exclusive'* content is a dead end for me, I won't use it to look at content. Plus it is unpopular with the youngsters.
*Hardly ever is exclusive, PinkBike, BikeRadar or elsewhere have normally posted it first.
Load times are my main bugbear at the mo. In fact it’s the only site I use at present that occasionally demands I restart Chrome (iOS 11) in order to inject some pace. Not guaranteed to work either and is the reason I often leave the site or bail from submitting a post.
The migration to GC can’t come soon enough IMO.
Why is the forum now loading in one font then changing to a different one?
I see that too, especially on ipad. Weird.
I see the font change on Chrome on Mac, seems like an instance of what's known as FOUC - Flash of Unstyled Content.
Just noticed it myself; forum loading in one font then switching to another.
Surely there has to come a point when you realise you're trying to massage a bag of smashed crabs and you just need to throw in the towel?
Wind back the arrogance, admit your mistakes, sort the problems.
It's not me that is coupled to the sinking ship...
Re the "retrograde step" I noted earlier. Please ignore, fault at my end.
Why is the forum now loading in one font then changing to a different one?
Fonts are loaded from Google's CDN. Until they load the browsers makes a best guess about what to use. Once the font file has loaded all test is redrawn with the correct font. If you want consistent fonts across browsers this is one of the downsides.
why is the font so tiny on overview compared to the side text?
I'm not sure I've seen this specific thing mentioned, but it's related to a common issue which we have covered. I was just logged out in the middle of editing a post - if I wasn't fairly IT savvy I could easily have lost a lot of my typing which would have been pretty irritating. I initially just checked the post age to see if I'd gone past some timer, but it was only 7 minutes.
I don't particularly have a problem with being logged out excessively - I presume it was just the standard 2 week logout, and I don't suppose this is a new issue though it's not one I've seen before. I've already given my explanation above why any logout is daft, but being logged out in the middle of editing a post you've just made is particularly daft. If you really have to regularly log people out then you should at minimum have an activity timer and only log people out when they're inactive.
Though as a dev and having some idea of the complexity of issues like this, I know what I'd be doing given a choice between implementing an activity timer and removing the auto-logout...
Unable to expand text to make it easier to read on iPad, screen forced to re-render to original size imcluding all the stuff down the right I don’t want to see.
Painfully slow, possibly even more painful than that. Certainly slower. There's a possibility I'll lose the will to live while waiting for this to submit. In which case, thank you, it's been emotional.
ipad 4th gen iOS 10.3.3 Safari...
Forget my post above, have had same rendering problem on other websites
Is it only me that gets black text on the main forum page when in portrait on my tablet and blue text when in landscape?
Painfully slow
See the "our forum" sticky. The host can't cope, STW is looking to relocate.
Is it only me that gets black text on the main forum page when in portrait on my tablet and blue text when in landscape?
Desktop vs mobile sites?
Is there any progress being made on making a usable search function? fixing the search results on Google. ?
If you are listening to feedback then, this forum software is the most unintuitive, least user friendly load of cack ive ever had the misfortune to ',use,
I really don't want to sound like a smart arse but this place is crawling with <span style="font-size: 0.8rem;">IT whallas of various flavours. What would happen if we (I'm afraid I'm one of them) implemented something that needed this much remedial action to correct post launch? I know there's only so much that can be done in parallel and/or testing but it doesn't look like that much has been picked up. It looks more like the chuck it in, see what happens and remediate approach has been used.</span>
Great, thanks...
<edit> what is that formatting bullshine above? Strangely, I didn't put it in...
<edit2> why has performance suddenly become an issue with the host? Has traffic massively increased causing the issue or is the overhead of the new causing it? No pre-launch performance testing then...?
@simondbarnes - I tried on my tablet (iPad) last night and get pale blue thread titles in both portrait and landscape.
@boblo - see Cougar's post two above yours about the speed. The HTML tags appearing in posts did occur when people copied and pasted a post and included the user name and membership status, it didn't happen if you just copied the actual post. What device, platform and browser are you using? Any add-ons? There'll be a mis-match somewhere.
It's really quite messed up today.
Where shall we start:
- I'm logged in, I'm a "Premium" member but still getting adverts. Or maybe I'm not a P member anymore - in the old forum it was easy to find out, this one I can't find it anywhere. Who knows.
- The adverts are on top of the content
- The text at the top is just completely messed up.
- Oh, and "Favorite" ?
Firefox 59.0b11, on Linux x86-64.

@Whitestone I'm using Android on a tablet, no cut and paste just keying stuff in.
I saw the point about moving hosts. My question was, performance was fine before the change so is the performance hit to do with a miraculous coincidental increase in traffic or related to the change? I'm assuming the latter, so what testing was carried out pre-launch to ensure the site was/is performant post launch? That's probably a rhetorical question as I think I know the answer...
Oh, and Google flavoured jam tomorrow might be a future fix but any migration is likely to bring another load of issues hitherto unseen...
If you are listening to feedback then, this forum software is the most unintuitive, least user friendly load of cack I've ever had the misfortune to use
I was one of the few that would have liked to have updated the old forum to include some of the functionality of other forums that I participate in.
I remember thinking the only thing the old forum had going for it (compared to other fora) was the well sized and obvious "back to top" button.
Well at least posting youtube videos is easy.
I keep hoping I'm going to wake up and realise that this was all a dream inspired by Mel Brooks' "The Producers". Telling us that STW has seen its busiest day since a couple of weeks ago is hardly confidence inspiring...
They couldn't fix the old one. It was borked. The new one is being fixed. It's getting better all the time. The owner has listened to criticism and made changes.
Some of us quite like a moan. ☺
They couldn’t fix the old one. It was borked.
How was it broken?
The new one is being fixed. It’s getting better all the time.
It's an exercise in turd polishing.
Some of us quite like a moan.
Absolutely, and after my offer to share, for free, a successful business model that didn't include spamming its users with seizure inducing ads was completely ignored, I get to moan completely guilt free even though I'm not a subscriber.

Well the log out/log back in again seems to be working just as it did before the new version of the forum..
I quite like the familiarity..
@sbob - I thought the "seizure inducing" claim was hyperbole … but was just logged out and experienced the Aaronsbikes premier partner banner … holey moley!
Spoiler contains the ad…

@simondbarnes – I tried on my tablet (iPad) last night and get pale blue thread titles in both portrait and landscape.
Cheers. Maybe it's my tablet switching to the desktop site when I rotate it? Seems silly having different colour text for desktop and mobile, especially when it appears that blue text is difficult for colour blind people to read.
Oh and Aaron's bikes can go **** themselves.
I was going to log in last night (first time in over a month) to change my card details/make sure it didn't auto-renew my subscription. The first thing I saw was Cougars response to the Tumbleweed thread. I guess that helped clear up any lingering doubts.
It's a complete shambles. The one place you don't want to bluff your way through a failed IT implementation is on this forum. With the thousands of man-years of experience available, you'd have thought that would be understood. I'm pretty sure everyone I've ever had to manage a change for thought that they were "special" and the normal rules didn't apply. If it had been done properly then there wouldn't have been any need to work ridiculously long hours either as the pain would mostly have been experienced away from the live environment. The current impression is that someone is just pushing buttons and hoping for the right result.
But that's not why I'm ending my subscription. What this change has helped highlight is that the forum is really just here to prop up the mag. I've long championed the Premier payment as a means of showing my appreciation of the forum. What's now obvious is that the forum members are simply being used a resource. Advertisers pay to access us and our (sometimes inane) witterings are also used to attract, via Facebook etc, other folk to the site where they pay to see the content. In effect, we are here to provide free content to STW. That being the case, I don't see that I should also pay to keep the otherwise-failing magazine afloat.

How do you do that online - I can't find an option anywhere to change my sub?
Font weirdness

How do you do that online – I can’t find an option anywhere to change my sub?
You should be able to find a link to it here

Is it?

Where is the shortcut for inserting video tags?
Think ... easier.
Just copy and past the URL, no tags needed.
Forum Help page says tags...soo.
But yes, just post the link.

Nope - the only thing I can edit there is my delivery address. Maybe because I have a print sub so things work differently and I have to phone up (though in which case ISTM that's one of the things which most needs fixing if it's possible to do with a digital sub but not a print sub)?
@dumbbot Forum Help hasn't been updated since the new forum was released, I guess it's low priority, though it's another thing which could have been done ready to go before the release (at least for the things they'd already tested and were ready to roll at that point...)
I couldn't find out how to manage my subscription online either so just cancelled my direct debit through my online banking.
Something else?
If you’re getting in touch about your subscription please give us as much information as possible.Subscription Number (if you have one)
Subscriber’s name
Your delivery address, including postcode
Email address (especially if you paid online)
Website log-in / user name
subs@singletrackworld.com – 01706 814397
It’ll be a shame you wish to cancel your subscription but if you still feel the need to then you can do so by using those details.
Sure there's nothing dodgy about this new database? I mean,
1/ there's a Bike Forum thread showing in the Chat list.
2/ I've posted twice over the past few days in a "long running" thread and the posts have disappeared.
3/ Clicking "Reply" under any of my Replies Created, just takes me back to the top of Replies Created.
The first thing I saw was Cougars response to the Tumbleweed thread
Which Tumbleweed thread is that then?
It can't possibly be the one that was last posted in by Cougar 16 hours ago because that would be clearly visible on page 2 of the Chat forum......except it mysteriously isn't.
Dissention will not be tolerated. 😉
Edit: It's hidden in the bike forum but with a chat icon. How odd.
Edit: It’s hidden in the bike forum but with a chat icon. How odd.
It's because that when they try and move a thread to a different forum it currently only changes the icon and doesn't actually move the thread.
https://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/tumbleweed/
The first rule of Tumbleweed Thread is: you do not talk about Tumbleweed Thread.
The second rule of Tumbleweed Thread is: you DO NOT talk about Tumbleweed Thread!
Third rule of Tumbleweed Thread: if someone yells “report post!”, goes limp, or taps out, the thread is over.
Fourth rule: only two guys to a fight in a Tumbleweed thread.
If this is your first read of Tumbleweed Thread, you HAVE to post
....except you can't. It's been closed to new replies.
You've talked about "Tumbleweed Thread"..... REPORT, REPORT..... 😉 or go Limp 🙁
Looks like we are going to have go all FaceBook or Mumsnet!!!
Apologies if mentioned before, but I'm not looking through 2,800 posts!
The light blue text in the forum index...admittedly I'm on a fairly cheap and unimpressive Chromebook display, but I keep finding myself trying to adjust the laptop screen tilt or hit the increase brightness button.
Can we have a stronger/bolder colour please 🙂 (I'm talking dark blue, not orange!)
Scotroutes - that has always been the case that the forum is the bit that makes the money for STW. Mark said as much years ago.
We create the content that pays the wages of at STW towers - everything else is loss making hence the totally OTT adverts and still no solution to the hijacks / malware on mobile devices. The reduction in traffic on the forum must surely be causing sleepless nights.
The reduction in traffic on the forum must surely be causing sleepless nights.
Except that I think Mark said the traffic is actually going up (or was the highest since some day in January).
Well without the data can only take his word for it, but you've no idea if that day in January is representative.
The one thing I don't understand its not just the forum but the branding seems ****ed, surely there were meetings about forum colours and the font needing to be usable and also fit in with the brand, but instead it just seems so random and make it up on the fly.
As for the increased content on the main pages, have I missed something, but there seems nothing extra from the norm.
Mark claims all this had been planned, but from the outside looking in it looks shambolic.
Maybe I'm being a dumbass but:
How do I get back to my post history? My old link /user/gofasterstripes doesn't work.
/members/gofasterstripes/forums/replies/ is the best you're gonna get at the mo.
Just returned after a long absence - where's the "Start New Topic" button gone?
Just returned after a long absence – where’s the “Start New Topic” button gone?
Dunno. You can create a new topic by scrolling to the bottom of the page though.
I have not used the forum for a long time but received an email today. It was messages sent between SamC and dirkpitt74 regarding a set of wheels? Carbonated I believe.,,
i have no idea why I received it but felt compelled to drop in and report it?
Could you forward that to me please? Email in profile. Ta.
It’s because that when they try and move a thread to a different forum it currently only changes the icon and doesn’t actually move the thread.
This should now be fixed. Yell if you see it again.
Should the top ad overlap the menu bar?

OvidIg
Whenever Sky have even a hint of flash photography in a report they read out a warning so they don't get sued by epilepsy sufferers. This site now needs such a warning, and if you're reading this Aaaron, I'm talking mainly about you.
Im guessing this forum is going to die soon as they have now opened the facebook group?
I for one feel a little cheated.
Im guessing this forum is going to die soon as they have now opened the facebook group?
Possible though like any forum it depends on its users providing content. If it did die I wouldn't move to the FB group.
Just spotted an odd bit of code, containing the word data, in the posting box. It was there, then disappeared before I could get a screen shot.
Im guessing this forum is going to die soon as they have now opened the facebook group?
They have?
Im guessing this forum is going to die soon as they have now opened the facebook group?
The Singletrack Select one? Doesn't appear open to me.
ah so its the forum users but without the trouble makers.
oh better behave then 🙂
Still getting unkillable popups on android even when logged in.
Slower than a slow thing going slowly today...
So, apart from the random pop-ups obscuring the forum, the weird font switch, the variety of font sizes on the page, the broken pagination (check this thread on the index) and the woeful response times, it's all going swimmingly, yeah?
It surely can't be coincidence that the flurry of problem fixing took place during the mid-term holidays and that it now seems to have stopped. Maybe the "developers" are back to having to concentrate on their homework?
Or maybe something is going on behind the scenes.
My anti-seizure software is certainly being put through its paces, so I'm guessing that what is happening behind the scenes is that the devs are (unsuccessfully, thank Vishnu) trying their hardest to induce fitting.
That would explain the abysmal scrolling and load times.
🙂
iPad 4th gen, iOS 10.3.3: Immensely frustrating to read and post, the screen jumps all over the place as various bits load and a screen left with overlaying text and headers making it difficult to read. Selecting a thread to read becomes a lottery until waiting a minute or so for it all to settle down.
Have learnt not to leave the text reply box to check another previous post as going back to continue replying becomes an art in itself when trying to resume typing. Idle chat need not be this hard or difficult.
I'm also finding it impossible to copy and paste a block of text to use for quoting.
Still no auto upper case for a new paragraph.
Not quite as frustrating to use as the Parkers car review site, with its massively intrusive half page pop ups, but not far off.
Understandable only from the viewpoint that this is a cycling related forum and the industry's love for new and many standards.
Edit: Why do I bother try to edit? Screen jumping again makes it tiresome as trying to select the text box becomes like The Golden Shot and yet everything else is slower than slow. Tedious.
As has been said repeatedly on both this thread and the other one, the current focus is on site performance - STW is in the process of migrating to a new host.
But it has already been highlighted why site performance has become so poor.
STW was once an XC whippet. Now it's a turgid ebike and throwing more battery at it is not the answer. 😉
No complaints about your attitude from me Cougar. To be honest, I'm amazed and impressed with how well you and Drac, as the only two known mods, have dealt with the whole self-induced sabotage debacle. So, not surprising that you feel the need to let off steam every so often.
I hear divining can be quite therapeutic...
Chill Winston.
The changes are nothing to do with you, I'm surprised you take it so personally. I actually really like the forum, which is why I am so vocal about changes to its detriment.
Do I know better? I know I'm not so arrogant to think that I know best. How many extra non-paying users does the site need to cover the cost of the members who have said they are cancelling their subscriptions?
I'll try and keep my gob shut on the subject, just for you. 😉
Ps. New record! Napped yesterday and awoke to 252 blocked elements. 😀
Bump
Has this thread just become non-sticky?
As this thread is no longer a sticky, can we assume that all the amazing big picture forum brilliance that us normal people just wouldn't understand that has been going on behind the scenes is now complete?
Awaits patronising response.
🙂
Awaits patronising response.
To be fair, you don't deserve much else
The advert that appears between the bread crumb trail and the links to each forum at the top of each thread slightly overlaps the lower set of links. (Safari on iPad)
When the adverts appear in the RH sidebar they push that bar down over the footer. (Chrome on Mac)
Speed is a bit variable, sometimes it's reasonably nippy (not as fast as before the update) but at other times it's very slow.
I'm still getting typing issues on android. It doesn't always auto correct and I can't select half typed suggested words. Not always, just sometimes. Can't say for sure it isn't my phone but it only happens on here.
