Like the new look 👍
I like it ...
"It now seems much better."
I was lying. It opened quicker but once in its as slow as ever.
Fail to see this quote issue.
Block, copy, paste 2 seconds, works perfectly
I even "like" the page on Facebook already and I've still got the shitty banner.
I'm not one to moan about stuff like this, but this is a massive **** up and a total joke. I was indifferent to maintaining my P, but actively disinclined to keep supporting it if this is the new forum look.
Bit weird having a different font, colour and size when composing a new post.
It's always been that way.
There’s a massive advert (big ugly facebook link and advert for the magazine) on the right-hand side and I’m logged in (premier) but I can’t get rid of the advert, is this a permanent addition?
Dunno, I see it too. It's not a third-party advert though, it's promotion for the site. Speaking of which... there doesn't seem to be any adverts?
American spell checker though? neighbour neighbor — yep, looks like it!
That's your own local browser settings.
Speaking of which… there doesn’t seem to be any adverts?
Yeah, I can't see any either.
its as slow as ever.
See the updates in the "our forum" sticky.

Could you give any details as to what you don't like beyond "it's a **** up?"
Speaking of which… there doesn’t seem to be any adverts?
great do we get a refund on our
then?
Ah, so that's what they meant by integrating the forum with the main site (and facebook page). Access to all the content from one place. Yes, I could get used to that.
great do we get a refund on our
then?
Don't be facetious.
You subscribe to the magazine, an advert-free forum is a Brucie Bonus.
I like it.
Stop messing about with it wontcha..
👍😜
This is nice.
Menu doesn't work though - android on mobile...

Seeing as I've been very critical so far, I have to say I quite like it. The quoted text is very faint though. Keep going with the improvements and my P will be re-instated.
Edit Android /Chrome tablet and Android/Adblocker phone
2nd Edit, and finally I can zoom on my phone! I'm so happy :--)
Block, copy, paste 2 seconds, works perfectly
Iphone posting a response still is a bit odd ie it zooms I’m so you loose the edges of the box, text does however now wrap back inside the visible screen 🙂
No buttons though 🙁
Edit - I still have no clue how to quote in a box.
And the edit screen is plain odd on iPhone.
Edit - to get back to a thread you have contributed to you still need to know the secret squirrel pass key pressing #
Bit weird having a different font, colour and size when composing a new post.
It’s always been that way.
Since when? As all the posts used to be in one size and colour i guess a few people didnt spot that.
Also swiftkey still billocksed but currently quicker than waiting for 1 page to load on the laptop, win 10, chrome chewing 60 - 70%, of cpu. Ad block getting hit with 13 requests at the last look before it hung the browser. (im logged in andaaapremium member
Could you give any details as to what you don’t like beyond “it’s a **** up?”
The hideous slowness, which has been the case since the original update, 10+ seconds to post, or open a thread. I know there's been "indexing" and other stuff, but that's taken about a month now! That, and the banner telling me to follow Singletrack, which I do anyway, and enjoy the regurgitated content from months, or even years previous, that get posted periodically!
The font isn't brilliant, the grey quoting is daft, the buttons on the top of the reply box aren't particularly clear to me. But really I mainly object to being beta tested on a service I pay to support. I get fixing forward rather than rolling back and all that, and presumably a lot of the problems are volume based, but surely you can test in lower environments before deploying to production? Even if you didn't surely you learned from the last release that it wasn't really usable, so doing it again... bit weird!
On the plus side you've managed to do away with all the HTML crap on quoting, so well done.
havent commented at all yet since the 'update' other than to say ill always keep my P, but i hate that 'follow us' ad on the right taking up a third of the screen. to me its the same as any other annoying ad, which i choose not to see.
can we get rid of that please?
Menu doesn’t work though – android on mobile…
Cheers. In what way doesn't it work? (I rarely use the mobile site.)
The hideous slowness
Again, see the "Our forum" sticky. This too will pass.
That, and the banner telling me to follow Singletrack,
I don't know anything about this but I expect it's here to stay. I'm not keen on it either but it's less intrusive than many many other websites.
The font isn’t brilliant, the grey quoting is daft, the buttons on the top of the reply box aren’t particularly clear to me
The font is different. The grey a few people have mentioned, I'm sure it'll be an easy change. In what way aren't the buttons clear, they're the same as they were before the latest update aren't they? Screenshots / platform would help.
Predictive text/auto-complete entry on android is still bolloxed for some reason, TBH I couldn't care less what it looks like I'd rather it actually worked...
I tend to view/post to the forum more from my mobile than PC, and the new forum is becoming a chore to use on a phone now...
Can we have who posted the last post back please.
Predictive text/auto-complete entry on android is still bolloxed for some reason
Is this Swiftkey or something else?
Some menus are not quite right or the profile page needs a smaller font.
Reply box needs squishing in a bit. Text automatically now moves on to the next line, however you eventually disappear off the bottom of the screen and have to move it up manually
Main threads looking good, apart from quoted text that is really difficult to read.
No buttons ?
IPhone 8 safari
I tend to view/post to the forum more from my mobile than PC, and the new forum is becoming a chore to use on a phone now…
I think it looks much better - and its speeding up...
In what way aren’t the buttons clear, they’re the same as they were before the latest update aren’t they?
I suspect because they're now just a letter or pictorial of the function rather that saying quote, link etc. On a pc you can hover over them and they tell you what they do but you can't on mobile. I find it hard to believe that people can't see what they do though unless they've only started using a computing device for the first time a few hours ago.

Not for those using Chrome on desktop 😉
Did we always get a reply box at the end of each page of a thread
Did we always get a reply box at the end of each page of a thread
Yes
Not for those using Chrome on desktop
Its THERE for me 🙁

meh removed it with ad blocker, 1/3 of page now white better than the faceache advert
The massive facebook sidebar has crossed the line for me. Makes the page beyond irritating in landscape mode on iPad
Yes if you mean always since the big upgrade a couple of weeks ago - it wasn't there before that.
Just so it doesn't get forgotten I'll mention that I still have no buttons at the top of the reply box and Preview still doesn't work (it's still the scripts not running I presume).
Haven't read the whole of the update thread so may have already been covered (apologies if so), but sticking a CDN in front of the site will help massively for very little effort.
Page content when logged in is already sent with no-cache response headers, so should continue to work fine. Anon users would benefit from a short TTL on page content, and offloading static content with a long TTL would help reduce load on the single nginx box that appears to be running the site.
Given STW's a global site, a CDN should really be a no-brainer. If performance in the UK is bad, hate to think what it's like in the US/APAC.
(I'd hope that since it's all Wordpress/bbpress, the basics of server-side caching have already been done: https://codex.bbpress.org/getting-started/improving-performance/)
The hideous slowness

The server network card doing the high cpu usage shown in chrome task manager?

You misunderstand - I was suggesting it isn't necessarily a permanent addition if using Chrome on desktop, given that I find it irritating (though clearly there are other ways to remove it).
The massive facebook sidebar has crossed the line for me. Makes the page beyond irritating in landscape mode on iPad
Why?
(Genuine question, not being an arse)
sticking a CDN in front of the site will help massively
Sorry, "CDN"?
EDIT: Never mind, Googled. I'll pass on your comments (and everyone else's), thanks for that.
Aye. Cheers.
^ I find the same. The forum body text is a very light font. The other third of the page is a boldly contrasting sidebar. It disappears in portrait mode, fortunately. Generally (re font changes) I quite literally am reminded of my overdue Specsavers appt 🤓
meh removed it with ad blocker, 1/3 of page now white better than the faceache advert
thanks bruneep, didnt know you could do that. for some reason it made me irrationally angry 😀 the fact i pay to subscribe, turn ads off, then have that forced onto the page instead irks me.
EDIT: actually it keeps coming back on each new page, so that hasnt worked for me. still irked.....
For me, the text is too pale, nearly unreadable, and the quoted text is just about invisible. I guess black on white isn't the fashion, which is bad news for us old people.
But also the question is there about the speed issue (about 100x faster loading desktop site on Android Chrome vs windows Chrome) and no massive CPU load either. Not expecting an answer from you but just knowing it's logged.
(Genuine question, not being an arse)
I prefer to hold my iPad landscape, it's more comfortable that way.
I want to be able to read the content of the forum. That's why I come here.
If I wanted to read the content of Facebook, I'd go there. Which I don't.
It's like watching an Attenborough documentary on BBC One but you only get the picture in two thirds of the screen because the other third is taken up with an episode of Top of the Pops from 1983, but hey, that's okay because it's all BBC content.
I find it a bit jarring.
I've never felt that the site has tried to force feed me any content before until tonight
General look is better, font is too light, quotes are far too light, finding them very difficult to read on my iPad Pro at full screen.
Still no buttons above the reply box.
No problems with large adverts or a sidebar.
I get the following on Firefox; site works on Chrome.
Your connection is not secureThe owner of www.singletrackworld.com has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.
This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox may only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate.
Working fine on iPad Pro and iPhone 7 but yeah the quote text is too pale.
Is this Swiftkey or something else?
Yep SwiftKey.
Vanilla version nothing clever...
Having to scroll to the top of the page after reading recent posts is great.
Really great.
I’m reading this on my iPad and the 1/3 of the screen in landscape mode is too much. The reason for my premier subs is so i don’t have to have that sort of rubbish on screen. If I want to go to Facebook I’m more than capable of finding it myself.
Same as someone above - light font etc on the left for the forum and hi contrast Facebook ad on right side.
Ive not bothered moaning about the new forum so far as th9ngs have to change I guess and things don’t always work out as planned. This is a bit annoying though.
The quote text is a bit pale but overall I love the look of it.
And that 'Follow Us' on the right is annoying and a waste of space, IMO.
Having to scroll to the top of the page after reading recent posts is great.
Really great.
Do you not get the menu bar at the top of the page?
sadex I had to locate another extension that would remove the FB advert
If you really think the forum isn't doing its job right now, ask Mark. Not resident grumpy Mark, Bullheart Mark.
And as far as resident grumpy Mark is concerned; all I can say is thanks for updating this free facility that we all find so essential in our lives.
Anybody who has worked in IT, and who has bothered to read the updates will know that it's a task akin to moving the passengers of a Boeing 707 to a 787 in mid-air without dropping anybody. Even those who deserve it.
I think they've done pretty well. Thanks again.
I don't get the Facebook stuff at the side of the forum on my android tablet, it appears underneath it.

Thing is with the Facebook follow us thing - why do you think you need to promote the site to people who already subscribe? You’ve already got my attention (and my money).
I’m guessing we’re not paying for Ps at the moment, as y’know the point is there’s no ads, not just no 3rd party ads... Can’t believe that’s actually here to stay, given it’s been universally disliked.
Just so I'm clear when reporting back,
The primary beef with the "follow us" thing is that it's too large in landscape mode on the mobile site, have I got that right?
Can’t believe that’s actually here to stay, given it’s been universally disliked.
Has it? Doesn't bother me in the slightest.
It's intrusive. There is no option to view it, or not and then move on.
In portrait it appears at the end of the thread which is much better
theres a neat bug if you increase the text size the till the top menu jumps to a new line it becomes a "floating" menu as you scroll, quite neat but looks shit as it clashes with the text underneath 🙂
My primary beef is as above. You’ve already got me hooked and I’ve given you my money. Why do you need to keep marketing to me? That’s why 8m happy to pay my subs.
on my iPad it’s where my right finger hovers. Instead of being able to click something useful it’s just at risk of clicking the Facebook banner.
The primary beef with the “follow us” thing is that it’s too large in landscape mode on the mobile site, have I got that right?
Not for everyone on me for example it’s at the bottom with iOS and Safari on the mobile site, on the iPad Pro it’s on the right but takes up about the same amount of space as the old advert bar.
That and certainly as a paid up p user we dont really need it
It might as well be adverts. They’d be more useful.
I’m guessing we’re not paying for Ps at the moment, as y’know the point is there’s no ads, not just no 3rd party ads… Can’t believe that’s actually here to stay, given it’s been universally disliked.
Three things here.
1) It's not an advert, it's part of the site. Nothing's changed here. The BBC doesn't have advertising but still runs trailers for other shows. Show me any commercial forum that consists of nothing but forum text and you can have my bike. Every other website I visit these days wants to throw links to other articles in my face before I've even read the one I came here to read.
2) you don't pay for "no ads," you pay for a subscription to the site / magazine and the advert thing is a bonus.
3) It's "here to stay" and been "universally disliked" by a handful of people since the site went live a few hours ago. C'mon.
FWIW I really hate the Facebook thingy floating in my eyeline and it's all been said already up there, can you get rid of it please - or give subscribers a way to block it. Ta muchly.
The BBC doesn’t have advertising but still runs trailers for other shows.
Not simultaneously and constantly throughout the shows they don't.
Please get rid of the follow us banner .
I don’t use Facebook.
i am not going to start just for you, I pay a subscription, what more do you want?
take it away or my subscription will be cancelled .

I get the following on Firefox; site works on Chrome.
That's weird. It's fine for me on Firefox. Anyone else seeing security warnings?
Yep SwiftKey.
Yeah, a few folk have reported similar. Given that it's a subset of a subset of browsers I doubt it's going to be high on the priority list of fixes, but we flagged it up earlier.
Agreed, junk at the side should go.
I get that it's not an advert, but it looks like one, just a bit messy and irritating.
That the official position cougar? Shut up and stop complaining it ain't going to change.
One of thetmain selling points of membership is zero ads on the forum. Its one of the reasons stw has my money. With the greatest of respect for the work of the mods this is commercial feedback from customers. Please don't dismiss them out of hand.
My point stands, stw has my cash don't push more onto me.
One of thetmain selling points of membership is zero ads on the forum
It's not an ad though. It's content.
you don’t pay for “no ads,”
The subscription page tells me I'm paying for:
Optimised, ad free website browsing
I would post a link to that, but without the buttons I CBA to try to post a URL. So as a paying customer, can I just point out that a large floating Facebook ad is something I really don't want, and the fact that it seems to have been prioritised over giving me back the functionality I used to have is pretty much telling me you don't value me as a customer.
It's not content, it's annoying shite.
That the official position cougar?
No it's my own opinion / interpretation of where we are. The moderators don't speak with any official status on behalf of the site owners and never have.
There's been a massive upgrade, and people are lining up to say how shit it is whilst the paint is still wet and the developers are probably in bed having worked all day on Sunday. Which is kinda depressing for me so must be heart-breaking for those invested in the site.
Mark has said all along that this is transitionary. Read the first post. Maybe the contentious banner will be removed for subscribers, maybe it'll be presented in a different format. Maybe it won't. Who knows at this point. Reporting issues is great because we can feed back, er, feedback to the Powers That Be. Throwing your toys out of the pram a couple of hours after an upgrade because it looks slightly different to how it was before isn't constructive.
"Cougar
The primary beef with the “follow us” thing is that it’s too large in landscape mode on the mobile site, have I got that right?"
I'm on desktop and right now it's taking up as much screen as the reply/preview box. I don't hate that we have it but it's redonkulously big.
The light grey quoting is more of a usability thing, I have one bad eye and it's giving me some reading issues. Of all the ways you guys could have emulated Dirt magazine this is not the one I'd have chosen.
But it seems like a step forward and I'm sure is the result of lots of hard work so thanks folks, keep at it! If nobody was moaning it'd mean the thread must be broken.
No toy-pram separation here.
It jars. You asked why. I told you. It's feedback
Plenty of nice improvements.
Agree that the body text (colours and font) in the forum is even less readable than before though.
And a screenshot of the menu fun, on my iPad:
