How do I search the forum for a post I haven’t responded to?

You press quote then paste the text, don’t forget click the little blackboard wiper
FFS! Yeah it seems to be getting worse.
Given what appear to be the pitiful number of posts on the forum over the past few days, I think that either the UK is experiencing some barmy cycling weather, or that this place is dying at quite a pace.
<span style="color: #444444; font-size: 16px; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: #eeeeee;">or that this place is dying at quite a pace.</span>
Ive barely bothered coming here in the last couple of weeks.
I’m sure there are plenty of others that are the same. Hardly worth bothering with it the way it is at the moment. 😔
edit. Yup, quote works great 🙄
This is just a test.
Mods.
Report button, does it work?
Ive made a spelling mistake in a thread and I want it changed, couldn’t do that after the “time out” so I thought I’d report my own post to get the nasty word changed.. but when you hit “report” ya don’t get the old “why, what’s wrong with the post? Why you reporting it?” Box
Ta.

Yeah the forum does seem to be dying a death. But hey, at least there aren't avatars. Avatars really ruin a forum.
When are STW going to admit defeat and revert the forum to one that actually works properly?
This is dreadful and you can see simply from the rapidity of posts that people are giving up and probably going elsewhere.
Presumably the nerdy types can get some stats together for post volume and frequency and see that folks are just getting pissed off and giving up(?)
Or can they?
Italicised emojis.
Sweet upgrade.

I think it's great that you get a free word search with every use of the quote function.
But hey, at least you can feel smug about paying for premium, or premier or whatever it is to turn off the ads. I'm sure that makes it way better.
Some do, some don't, it's related to the account. How exactly, I'm unsure.
<span style="font-size: 12.8px;">How exactly, I’m unsure.</span>
just trying something
ah well.
.... blah blah free wordsearch...
first time logged in this week, no apparent improvement.
see you next week.
Was going to mention that the quote button seems to still be borked but I see everyone is aware. Word search is about right. This surely has to be damaging the forum and Singletrack itself.

You can go back in and edit out the impressive amount of garbage, plus add the username.

This really isn't fun anymore, is it?
At least the latest issue of the mag is worth reading. I might just stick with that for a bit.
Manually editing the result isn’t really the point though, is it?
Speaking of edits, I was surprised a few days ago when I found I couldn’t edit or delete a fool comment on the front page of the actual site. Absolute classic, hadn’t read the article properly and commented...
Not sure whether it's been posted or not, but 'topics started' and possibly favourites don't contain results from the classifieds...
I have (sort of) bitten my tongue on this ..... but a while ago STW Towers advertised for tech / web developers ... it struck me at the time that the money being offered was pretty cut price. As they say in Office Bull S Bingo ... now we are where we are.
Ok.
It’ll be a slow today and over the weekend as there’s some magic going on at STW towers.
What magic has happened then? is the quote fixed?
clearly not 🤔
clearly not
Let's see. Clicked blockquote button, copied and pasted your text
clearly not
Copied and pasted your text, highlighted it and clicked the blockquote button, then enter twice
As a further test this is some text copied from a story on the BBC site:
A scene in the film shows a character who suffers a blackberry allergy being pelted with them by a gang of bunnies.
It looks like it's the copy/paste functionality that's messed up in the new editor code used for writing posts.
Earlier at a STW Towers COBRA meeting.
It’s OK guys. I know you don’t want to hear this, but we could deploy.....the backup.
I mean, there’s got to be a backup, right? You guys kept a backup, yeah? Backup? Yeah?

@@whitestone not easy to do when buttons are covered. it's not something that we should have to do either.

Now, brace yourself Rodney.........we’re going to deploy the forum upgrade.....

could someone from stw towers actually tell us what the long term benefits of this change actually are ? as it currently seems like a more buggy and less usable version of old one with emoticons in thread titles !
could someone from stw towers actually tell us what the long term benefits of this change actually are ?
I believe the long term goal is a revamp of the entire website and greater integration of its parts, requiring an upgrade of the forum software.
As for when that will happen? Well, there's been talk of a fabled forum update since about 2008 I think....

If the above has the span detritus then copy/paste isn't working correctly in the text entry box. (I've done a clear cache forced page update prior to this post so should be clean)
clear cache forced page update
A copy puts the codes into your local copy buffer/clipboard along with the text, so clearing the page cache isn't related to the issue (as far as I understand it anyway)
...and it only worked for me because I'm on a proper keyboard so just typed in the appropriate [ quote] tags
@DezB - the clear cache was just to make sure I'd got the latest version of the forum. It's actually the past function that's broken - copying text from a web page and pasting it into any other editor just gives the plain text - none of my editors (either word processor or code editors) add the HTML to it.
Let's see if just adding the [ quote] [ / quote] tags does it.
and it only worked for me because I’m on a proper keyboard so just typed in the appropriate
Nope 🙁
That was type the [ quote] (without the space), past the text, type the closing block.
the clear cache was just to make sure I’d got the latest version of the forum
Oh no! You don't want that 😆
It’s actually the past[e] function that’s broken
Yep, I'd agree with that.
Wonder what happens when you paste from another forum...
its backwards according to the rotation marks on the tyre
Yup, deffo the paste!
[ the forum is working quite well for me … but then I only have the basic editor without any formatting tools or preview … ]
[ since the post editing and numbering issues were fixed, the forum has been faster, and more stable, than before the big upgrade to the back end stuff ]
Is anybody else's screen completely dominated by a massive 'P' for every post by a Premier subscriber?
Apologies to epicyclo, didn't mean to single you out for any particular reason, just wanted to illustrate the point! 🙂

Wow! Does that mean I'm a big P?
Runs off to check dictionary for words beginning with P.
Feeling important... 🙂
Edit: BTW I don't see that effect. (Safari, old iMac)
lol
You’re going to have to explain what you mean. As i said, it’s not a feature I ever used. Can you reply to the sticky please, then everything’s in one place.
From another post - The old useful forum activity page - the useful one that told you what thread and when it was last replied to, it's a nice short list compared to every post you have made in the last few days completely out of context with any discussion.
I will again…. but put simply it’s a list of all the thread titles you have replied in and the post count, time you last posted and time of the last post with the useful thing we used to have where the hover over was the last poster not a Reply to the thread name next to this hover over… It used to be under your Forum Activity page as the main thing

Interesting - how do you make sure you haven't got the latest version of the forum?

My understanding is that because of the nature of the change they can't revert to a backup (because the DB format has changed, and a backup would require reloading the DB and losing all recent posts). Of course if you're making such a fundamental change in the worlds most of us work in you make sure the upgrade is fully functional and has been thoroughly tested in a non live environment first...
What if it has been thoroughly tested, and this is how they want it to look/operate?

Still no quote or other formatting buttons here on Firefox, is it because I'm one of those Aldi types?
@aracer - by forum I meant the current versions of whatever code and libraries are in use not the posts themselves.
As a new forum member can I just say this is without a doubt the most infuriatingly frustrating website I've ever come across in terms of usability and not working functionality.
I'm not sure what the history is, but it's slow, clunky and half the stuff like quote and formatting just makes a mess of the content.
It's also massively crap on both PC and android to view.
The content of the forum is the savioir, and that's user generated. You really need to sort it out. I'm not sure what premium would give me, but based on what's going on I'd be incredibly wary of handing any hard earned over.
“Of course if you’re making such a fundamental change in the worlds most of us work in you make sure the upgrade is fully functional and has been thoroughly tested in a non live environment first…”
You mean, like, actually TEST something first?
Nah, let’s just go for the Wile E Coyote UAT method.

Is that a Forum Search button that I see on the main forums page?
Am afraid to try it...
I’m not sure what the history is
The history is a sprawling mass of ancient spaghetti code worked on by successive developers. What you see right now is the first step in getting it all sorted out. You managed to pick an unfortunate time to join I'm afraid!
Is that a Forum Search button that I see on the main forums page?
No
“What you see right now is the first step in getting it all sorted out”.
Holy shit. You mean there are more ‘steps’ to go?
And anyway, what I see right now is line after line of hieroglyphs where anyone tries to quote someone else.
The salient point about the Titanic was not the neatness of its deckchairs as it went into the depths.

Normally you switch to the new version when it's better. And you have version control to help with this. If you're just hacking like frantic banshees on the live system then it's going to be a long slow painful process.
I reckon this episode will go down in history along with the great hack of.....a few years ago!
If you’re just hacking like frantic banshees on the live system then it’s going to be a long slow painful process.
And one that may or may not end with a beautifully shiny new forum, but with a pretty much cast-iron guarantee that it has no users any more as they’ve all given up and ****ed off somewhere else. Emperor’s new clothes and all that.
The most telling thing is the deafening silence from anyone actually in a position to really know.
The best thing, in my opinion, would be this:
Issue a mea culpa.
Apologise for any inconvenience (probably more with buy/sell than anyone’s missives about what tyres for Brexit) as posts since the ‘upgrade’ are going to disappear.
Admit defeat and run ‘reinstall as at date of upgrade minus one’.
Work out a proper plan of upgrades to be rolled out to a staggered schedule.
Ask for a group of regular forum users who are willing to UAT each change.
Use said group to stress test and UAT each change.
Implement each change only when the previous one has been signed off.
This isn’t the NHS. People aren’t going to die because the new system turns out to be shit. Remove fingers from ears, listen to your users - and appear to be listening (a bit of PR never hurts).
If you don’t you will need to find a whole new set of users. I don’t need to be on here, I doubt most others really do.
And I’ve already booked a holiday this year and it wasn’t through Jet2.
^^ wise words
Yep, wise words from Dannyh.
Especially this,
"The most telling thing is the deafening silence from anyone actually in a position to really know."
You may notice the site response times being quite slow over the weekend. This is because we are indexing our entire website to be able to bring back a new and improved search function to the site.
We hope faster browsing will be back by the end of the weekend
^^Well said!^^
I think.
😳😂🤔
People are’t going to die about sums it up.
Quote's still not working for me. I tried to paste Mark's post in the locked sticky "Our Forum" thread.
😯
People won’t die, but the forum might.
When I click on a thread it doesn’t seem to display the first post so you just read answers to it. It’s slightly entertaining but another example of the Singletrackworld muppet show... 😘
People are’t going to die about sums it up.
Die no. Lose their business and potentially the shirt from their back. ?????
So now that the site is indexed are we going to see the new Google?
When that's finished is Mark going to reinvent eBay for the classified section?
"People aren't going to die about sums it up." you seem to have got that whilst completely missing Remove fingers from ears, listen to your users – and appear to be listening (a bit of PR never hurts).
No I seen that too and can see that but I refer back to “No one is going to die”
The forum is pretty shit the way it is now, you still post though and that is happening.
It'll be a cold day in Hell before Mark either (1) coughs to the ownership of having ballsed this whole thing up in an epic way (from concept to initial delivery to further, er, "developments") and (2) offers any form of sincere apology. For the record, I've never had a problem with people miscalculating, getting things wrong, making mistakes, etc - everyone is allowed to do so. But some half-baked, vague, nonchalant statement (with more than a hint of defiance) issued on a self serving, 'this is my sandpit' style sticky thread that no-one can challenge you on isn't the mark of a leader in my book.
However, I'll bet my onions he'll continue to wheel Cougar and Drac out as sacrificial lambs to take the flak. I'm not sure what maintains your loyalty gents, but if I was Mark I'd sure as hell be letting you know your value.
I'd now follow this serious post up with a funny meme/.gif but it'd probably break the forum. Let's hope no butterflies flap their wings in the rainforests of South America, eh?
Sorry, Drac, not pointed at you.was for our great and entitled overlord, sir Alker of smug.
Does anyone else find it bizarre to have classes AND all that styling?
He has already Bullheart.
Still cold out there tonight though.
As Bullheart said. I've the upmost respect for Drac and Cougar, (and the unnamed MODS), that keep this place ticking over.
Yes, I can still post, but it's gone far beyond a chore. The basic functionality of the forum is like nothing I've ever seen before. Just typing requires multiple corrections, deletes, autocorrect spannering everything. I've tried posting images, I've given up. I can sometimes quote, but the level of editing required to make it legible is breathtakingly stupid.
If this is Mark's idea of a legitimate product, yes a product, I'm a paying customer remember, then it will only be a matter of time before STW is lying dead on the ground.
Unless some genuine feedback is given by the owners, an apology, and a transparent plan of what and when us customers can expect a working product then I'm not going to go down with the band playing in the background. I'll take my subscription elsewhere.
#NotAFlounce I genuinely want STW to succeed, but all I can see is the spasming corpse in its death throes.
So yes, there are bugs and they will be fixed. in the meantime I’m sorry for the glitches but sometimes you have to rip everything down before you can build something better.
Lose their business and potentially the shirt from their back.
Well they can always get new jobs as forum devs 😉
