You press quote then paste the text, don’t forget click the little blackboard wiper

FFS! Yeah it seems to be getting worse.

Given what appear to be the pitiful number of posts on the forum over the past few days, I think that either the UK is experiencing some barmy cycling weather, or that this place is dying at quite a pace.

Ive barely bothered coming here in the last couple of weeks.

I’m sure there are plenty of others that are the same. Hardly worth bothering with it the way it is at the moment. 😔

Mods.

Report button, does it work?

Ive made a spelling mistake in a thread and I want it changed, couldn’t do that after the “time out” so I thought I’d report my own post to get the nasty word changed.. but when you hit “report” ya don’t get the old “why, what’s wrong with the post? Why you reporting it?” Box

Ta.

Yeah the forum does seem to be dying a death. But hey, at least there aren't avatars. Avatars really ruin a forum.

When are STW going to admit defeat and revert the forum to one that actually works properly?

This is dreadful and you can see simply from the rapidity of posts that people are giving up and probably going elsewhere.

Presumably the nerdy types can get some stats together for post volume and frequency and see that folks are just getting pissed off and giving up(?)

Or can they?

Was going to mention that the quote button seems to still be borked but I see everyone is aware.  Word search is about right.  This surely has to be damaging the forum and Singletrack itself.

Manually editing the result isn’t really the point though, is it?

Speaking of edits, I was surprised a few days ago when I found I couldn’t edit or delete a fool comment on the front page of the actual site.  Absolute classic, hadn’t read the article properly and commented...

I have (sort of) bitten my tongue on this ..... but a while ago STW Towers advertised for tech / web developers ... it struck me at the time that the money being offered was pretty cut price.  As they say in Office Bull S Bingo ... now we are where we are.

As a further test this is some text copied from a story on the BBC site:

A scene in the film shows a character who suffers a blackberry allergy being pelted with them by a gang of bunnies.

It looks like it's the copy/paste functionality that's messed up in the new editor code used for writing posts.

I believe the long term goal is a revamp of the entire website and greater integration of its parts, requiring an upgrade of the forum software.

As for when that will happen? Well, there's been talk of a fabled forum update since about 2008 I think....

If the above has the span detritus then copy/paste isn't working correctly in the text entry box. (I've done a clear cache forced page update prior to this post so should be clean)

clear cache forced page update

A copy puts the codes into your local copy buffer/clipboard along with the text, so clearing the page cache isn't related to the issue (as far as I understand it anyway)

@DezB - the clear cache was just to make sure I'd got the latest version of the forum. It's actually the past function that's broken - copying text from a web page and pasting it into any other editor just gives the plain text - none of my editors (either word processor or code editors) add the HTML to it.

Let's see if just adding the [ quote] [ / quote] tags does it.

and it only worked for me because I’m on a proper keyboard so just typed in the appropriate

Nope 🙁

You’re going to have to explain what you mean.  As i said, it’s not a feature I ever used.  Can you reply to the sticky please, then everything’s in one place.

From another post - The old useful forum activity page - the useful one that told you what thread and when it was last replied to, it's a nice short list compared to every post you have made in the last few days completely out of context with any discussion.

I will again…. but put simply it’s a list of all the thread titles you have replied in and the post count, time you last posted and time of the last post with the useful thing we used to have where the hover over was the last poster not a Reply to the thread name next to this hover over… It used to be under your Forum Activity page as the main thing

My understanding is that because of the nature of the change they can't revert to a backup (because the DB format has changed, and a backup would require reloading the DB and losing all recent posts). Of course if you're making such a fundamental change in the worlds most of us work in you make sure the upgrade is fully functional and has been thoroughly tested in a non live environment first...

As a new forum member can I just say this is without a doubt the most infuriatingly frustrating website I've ever come across in terms of usability and not working functionality.

I'm not sure what the history is, but it's slow, clunky and half the stuff like quote and formatting just makes a mess of the content.

It's also massively crap on both PC and android to view.

The content of the forum is the savioir, and that's user generated.  You really need to sort it out.  I'm not sure what premium would give me, but based on what's going on I'd be incredibly wary of handing any hard earned over.

Nah, let’s just go for the Wile E Coyote UAT method.

I’m not sure what the history is

The history is a sprawling mass of ancient spaghetti code worked on by successive developers.  What you see right now is the first step in getting it all sorted out.  You managed to pick an unfortunate time to join I'm afraid!

“What you see right now is the first step in getting it all sorted out”.

Holy shit. You mean there are more ‘steps’ to go?

And anyway, what I see right now is line after line of hieroglyphs where anyone tries to quote someone else.

The salient point about the Titanic was not the neatness of its deckchairs as it went into the depths.

Normally you switch to the new version when it's better. And you have version control to help with this. If you're just hacking like frantic banshees on the live system then it's going to be a long slow painful process.

If you’re just hacking like frantic banshees on the live system then it’s going to be a long slow painful process.

And one that may or may not end with a beautifully shiny new forum, but with a pretty much cast-iron guarantee that it has no users any more as they’ve all given up and ****ed off somewhere else. Emperor’s new clothes and all that.

The most telling thing is the deafening silence from anyone actually in a position to really know.

The best thing, in my opinion, would be this:

Issue a mea culpa.

Apologise for any inconvenience (probably more with buy/sell than anyone’s missives about what tyres for Brexit) as posts since the ‘upgrade’ are going to disappear.

Admit defeat and run ‘reinstall as at date of upgrade minus one’.

Work out a proper plan of upgrades to be rolled out to a staggered schedule.

Ask for a group of regular forum users who are willing to UAT each change.

Use said group to stress test and UAT each change.

Implement each change only when the previous one has been signed off.

This isn’t the NHS. People aren’t going to die because the new system turns out to be shit. Remove fingers from ears, listen to your users - and appear to be listening (a bit of PR never hurts).

If you don’t you will need to find a whole new set of users. I don’t need to be on here, I doubt most others really do.

And I’ve already booked a holiday this year and it wasn’t through Jet2.

You may notice the site response times being quite slow over the weekend. This is because we are indexing our entire website to be able to bring back a new and improved search function to the site.

We hope faster browsing will be back by the end of the weekend

It'll be a cold day in Hell before Mark either (1) coughs to the ownership of having ballsed this whole thing up in an epic way (from concept to initial delivery to further, er, "developments") and (2) offers any form of sincere apology. For the record, I've never had a problem with people miscalculating, getting things wrong, making mistakes, etc - everyone is allowed to do so. But some half-baked, vague, nonchalant statement (with more than a hint of defiance) issued on a self serving, 'this is my sandpit' style sticky thread that no-one can challenge you on isn't the mark of a leader in my book.

However, I'll bet my onions he'll continue to wheel Cougar and Drac out as sacrificial lambs to take the flak. I'm not sure what maintains your loyalty gents, but if I was Mark I'd sure as hell be letting you know your value.

I'd now follow this serious post up with a funny meme/.gif but it'd probably break the forum. Let's hope no butterflies flap their wings in the rainforests of South America, eh?

As Bullheart said. I've the upmost respect for Drac and Cougar, (and the unnamed MODS), that keep this place ticking over.

Yes, I can still post, but it's gone far beyond a chore. The basic functionality of the forum is like nothing I've ever seen before. Just typing requires multiple corrections, deletes, autocorrect spannering everything. I've tried posting images, I've given up. I can sometimes quote, but the level of editing required to make it legible is breathtakingly stupid.

If this is Mark's idea of a legitimate product, yes a product, I'm a paying customer remember, then it will only be a matter of time before STW is lying dead on the ground.

Unless some genuine feedback is given by the owners, an apology, and a transparent plan of what and when us customers can expect a working product then I'm not going to go down with the band playing in the background. I'll take my subscription elsewhere.

#NotAFlounce I genuinely want STW to succeed, but all I can see is the spasming corpse in its death throes.
