How do you do the quote box thingy that you can use to reply to a message? Have tried to RTFM but just cannot find any info. Asking for a friend.

Copy and paste the text you want, highlight it and hit B-QUOTE.

Or, hit B-QUOTE, paste the text then hit it again.

We really need an FAQ for this stuff...

An actual quote function would be even better.

Is that even possible on an Internet forum?

Did I see a spoiler box too? Click the button to reveal the stuff you don't want to know. But can't help clicking it anyway.

Just had to try... Problem is that the copy paste box hides the B-quote box on my tablet, so it's a catch-22!!

That one you have to type spoiler in between [ ] and then /spoiler between [ ]

Yeah.. Every post has a quote icon, if you click it, it opens a reply with the quote already done.

How do you stop the copy/paste box from covering the B-quote menu. I've never quoted anyone before, so haven't used this function. And my thread above seems to be boxed the wrong way around!

Nah. Don't believe you. If it was that simple we'd have it here.

You can also type quote and /quote inside [ ] brackets manually if the buttons are giving you gyp.

You’d be quite welcome to leave and join one of those forums.

Difficult on this forum on a mobile phone, but I've found a solution, highlight the text.

Then scroll up slightly so you can see the b-quote button, leave your finger held down and as if you are still scrolling.

then (at ninja speed) release your finger and press B-quote with a finger on your other hand before it gets covered up by the copy/paste overlay box thing.
You need two hands to do this, as it happens too quickly to do it with one hand.

Trying the ninja technique, but it seem so fiddley, not sure I can be bothered to use it in anger!

Copy the text, go to the reply box and type [ then type quote and then type ], making sure no spaces between them.
Paste your text then type [ then / then quote and then ] - again making sure no spaces.
Post and that is hit.

When the forum/site went through its metamorphosis (being kind here) it was stated that one of, if not the, reason for doing so was to allow integration between the various parts.

Unfortunately the forum software chosen makes 1990s Usenet editors look sophisticated, hell it makes the word processor on the Amstrad NC100 look intuitive. If it were personified it would be Piers Morgan with the (few) redeeming features removed, in fact it seems to have virtually all features removed. At the last guess I'm on seven or eight forums using a variety of software stacks with posting rates from a few per day to several thousand per day and while they have their quirks they all outshine this.

AIUI there were two reasons. One is as you say, the old forum might have superficially looked OK but was a car crash under the hood. The replacement software, for better or worse from a UX perspective and I discussed this with STW at length at the time, was the easiest fit to bring some degree of normality. It would be very easy to use "better" forum software in isolation, but the forum is not in isolation.

The second is that external forces, Google et al, forced STW's hand. It had to change sooner rather than later or STW would likely have had to close up shop. Ie, they didn't have a lot of choice.

Unfortunately the forum software chosen

It's an off-the-shelf theme which STW acknowledges is no longer fit for purpose. A custom replacement is on the roadmap.

Roadmap? This is a mountain biking forum...we don't need no steenkeeng Roadmap! (we'll use the built-in mapping solution on our GPS devices as it turns out modern mountain bikers don't like going into the unknown without a hand holding us...)
