only applies to those who wont take responsibility for their own retirement and invest in a private pension during their years of employment giving themselves the flexibility to retire at what ever age they wish to.....of course.

Edric - it all depends how important you think it is, to provide for your own retirement.

You can always work into your 70's...

What stoner said. I'll be retiring in my 50's thank you. Shame I'll wait 20 years for the state element to kick in

I don't see it as a bad thing to work into your 70s. But not to be forced to.

I don't see the problem, the retire and then live for ages before you die thing was clearly only ever a temporary blip in the way of life. 65 years old was only chosen as the age of retirement as it was the average age ex soldiers die at the time.

The biggest thing that need to be changed is age discrimination and the availability of part time jobs, which for many would give sufficient income to live off of. Re: discrimination, it can be hard to get anything other than B&Q type job for many older, despite their skills and qualifications, my dad has certainly found this to be true being someone who want to work past 65. RE: Part time work, this too is an unfortunate fact that there are very few part time jobs of any skill level, although I'm sure the demand is there, but it's the administration an organization.

i could put 100's in the pension but apparently paying the mortgage and eating has to take priority.

Entirely notional age really..65/70 makes no odds really. Doubtless it'll all have changed again by the time I get there

Must agree with Edric on this, would love to put a couple of hundred away a month but it just isn't going to happen in the near future.

it all depends how important you think it is

Does it? Does it really? I mean really? Is that what it depends on? Is it?

I'm taking this to be some kind of a dismal and cheerless joke...

Hope to retire in my 50's so am stoking up the personal pension and using up ISA allowance each year. Don't want to have to rely on the state pension.

Pretty common for people in my line of work to keep going until they keel over, so it's not an issue from that POV. 34 years (for me) is a long-ass time, though, so who knows how our jobs / society will change in the interim? The Chinese / French / Martians could invade tomorrow and send us back to the caves - it's hard to know what the future holds.

As we have less and less children, there will be less and less people to support us in our retirement, so we need less pensioners.

Euthanasia or higher retirement ages are the choices, take your pick ๐Ÿ™‚

I put about 15% of my salary into a pension. Some idiot then "invests" it, while paying himself fees which generally roughly equal any increase in value his ham-fisted fumblings produce.

The likelihood of it all coming good around the time I want to stop working doesn't seem terribly good. ๐Ÿ™‚

wasn't there some calculation done that shows every year worked past the age of 60 or so reduce your life expectancy by about 5 years? Also, they showed last night on the news that when the 65 age was decided there were 4.5 workers per pensioner, now there is only 3 per pensioner, surely the answer is to get more people working?

I wonder how many of these folk calling for OAPs to continue working are the same ones that will say that immigrants have taken all the jobs.. So where will the old folk work exactly?

Seperately I think euthanasia is a bit extreme but also that a huge amount of public spending disappears into this moaning.. smelly.. ungrateful and useless sector of the community..

Maybe just give pensioners class A stimulants.. the ones that get on well with the drugs could maybe carry on working with an artificially increased output.. where as the ones that don't cope will be err... dead probably.

Maybe we should just work 'til we die then, but doing what? I'm pretty sure that the number of B&Q stores in Britain has reached saturation point.

Private pension here and main plan at the moment is to be able to retire and spend some of it before I'm put in a wooden box forever

The oil will run out in 20 - 30 years time, wars will be fought, and the world will descend in to a big fiery ball of death.
Spend it while you can, your pension will be **** all use to you in the future.

My plan is to retire about 60. I have private pension plans to keep me going for a while. But here's the brilliant bit.

If I run out of money, I'll just hold up a bank or something.
Nobody will suspect a 60 year old of armed robbery.

And the worst that can happen is they'll put you in prison, so you won't have to pay any bills. ๐Ÿ™‚

You've got the same retirement plan as me then!

The worst that could happen is that you while away your twighlight years at her majesty's pleasure.. three square meals.. free college eduacation.. playing cards for 'snout'.. and getting 'respek' for being one of the 'old firm'
