Cool does someone light it as they make their approach to land then? Sort of last minute EVA?

Alien plasma - we are being invaded from space.

From an old post, somewhere on the web

This is completely normal. The APU vents on either side of the tail fin always do this on every landing regardless of day or night landing. The APU's power the hydraulic system that allows the aero-surfaces to articulate. This was explained on NASA-TV. The flames are hydrazine venting and burning off.

I figured it was normal as nobody seemed to give a damn, just wondered what it was. Cheers for the quote.

I would have agreed it being a navigation light, but when they switch to the thermal camera it looks more like flames...

I was listening to the cockpit recorder.

Standard final flight procedure

The captain said "If I can't 'ave 'er I'm gonna make sure no-one else can 'ave 'er".

The 2nd officer replied "Leave it aaaaht - she aint worf it"

The captain signed off with "Flamin' slaaaag"

It was a faulty APU that caused several days delay in the launch of this shuttle.

I recall that a colleague at work called the emergency services out to a "fire" which turned out to be lights reflecting in rainwater on the runway.

Better safe than sorry to be fair, but we did laugh at him.

a lot
