Recently noticed that FireFox is using over 1GB of memory on my laptop 😯

Is this a known fault/issue?

Yes Firefox has always been known to use a lot of memory.. Just upped the RAM in my comp to deal with it. The last release was said to have dramaatically reduced this. It's worse if you ahve it open cnostantly as it's like creating a back-up of a back-up all the time or at least that's how it was explained to me.

Which version of FireFox?
Are you looking at actual memory usage?
How long have you had it running?
What Add-ons do you have installed?

If you go to about:memory what are the main things consuming all your memory?

Version 7 I think. I uninstalled it & downloaded the latest version from the Mozilla site as part of trying to work out whether it was behaving normally.

I've only looked at memory usage in Windows Task Manager. It seems to use about 0.8GB when first loaded, then gradually increases up to around 1.2GB over a period of time.

There's also some FireFox Plugin task running that uses a lot of memory too. Not sure if this is an add-on or a default feature of FireFox.

I usually have it running for several hours, sometimes all day (my wife uses it a lot whilst I'm at work).

Not sure which add-ons are installed. There'll only be a few.

I get this all the time. Sometimes over a gig of memory and over a gig of virtual. I had assumed it was Firebug or something leaking since nobody else seems to be complaining. (Firefox 7.something)

Yep. Used to like FF until about a year ago. Total hogger plus 3.5x really botched things up. Stuck with Chrome since then.

Is anyone still having issues with it freezing all the time?
I get about 10-15mins use before it freezes for around 1 min!
FF7

all browsers use buckets full of memory because all browsers support flash, and flash eats memory and leaks like a sieve. Though it does eat massive amounts of memory the biggest bugbear i have with firefox is the link recognition slow down over time grrrr.

200Mb here (XP), and I've been running it all day. I'd suggest it's a problem at your end.

Switched to Chrome ('cos it's multi-platform too) after FF3 went all resource-hungry.

No FF 7 seemed to fix this for me, I was seriously thinking of migrating to Opera or something as v6 and v6.something were becoming increasingly unusable. I also uninstalled all my add-ons and uninstalled FF, reinstalled FF and reinstalled add-ons - maybe it was that which "fixed" FF - all hunky dory now, even memory usage is better.

I use Flashdance, which may be why mine is sitting at 300MB.

Switched to Chrome

+1 seems the way ahead, a lot of users seem to be ditching FF for Chrome.

I ditched FF for chrome, but recently I've been having problems with Chrome on my netbook.

I tend to just shut the lid (which puts it into standby - Windows 7), and which I wake it up again it is really sluggish, with Chrome hogging most of the memory.

Restart of Chrome sorts it, but something isn't right.

Anyone else get something similar?

Dave

I stick to Firefox I tried the same set of tabs/pages in Chrome and it was no better for memory useage, it just breaks each tab out into a seperate process, whereas FF has a single process then a process or 2 for plugins.

It is memory intensive but so are all browsers, unless they are text only.

You need to sum up the memory useage of all the processes for Chrome then start flinging the shit at firefox! At least it's not IE/safari 🙂

Or just by some memory, unless some of you actualy try and work with less than 4gig - which I assume means you are a little bit backwards 😉

😯 why in the name of fox do you have so many tabs open???
I thought I was a heavy user with 20 odd.

use chrome FF is shit.

Not a big fan of Chrome. It's okay but I still prefer Firefox for my regular browsing as I have it set up just the way I like it - but then the only thing that ever causes me any issues with it is the blimmin Adobe PDF Reader plug-in (I know there are solutions to avoid using it - just haven't been bothered enough to sort it).

I really never got on with FF.... really surprised so many chrome haters, We've started publishing it as an app fro use with terminal server and citrix works infinitely better.

Yep! Contrary to what folk on this thread say. Firefox is often uses less memory than Chrome:

My 5-year-old Dell has a massive 2GB memory 🙂
Should be sufficient for my needs (e-mail & internet)

Much as I'd like one, I can't afford a new laptop...

RAM's cheap. Last 2Gb SODIMM I bought was about 20 quid.

Either Opteron or Xeon then?

Win7 flies along on older hardware, if you can get your hands on a copy.
