I don't think it matters, some elements of the film don't make sense following on from the series, and vice versa.

Series first, absolutely. The film ties up various loose ends. Joss made the series with the intention of it running to a second. The film gave him the opportunity to finish things more neatly than the sudden end of the series had allowed.
I always love the bar fight scene where River kicks a bloke in the back of the head, after he grabs her from behind...

It didn't tie up the preachers back story... That would have been interesting I reckon (I see there's a book you can get..hohum)

Series then film. Lots of bits in the film make more sense that way.

I watched the film, which was OK, but lost interest in the series after a few episodes.
