I've got an transaction I don't recognise on my account today, have phoned up my card people who gave me a merchant ID to 'put in the internet and see if anything comes up' - which it doesn't. Is there some sort of register I can put the number into to find the company responsible?

try in google
"Merchant ID" then the number if you haven't normally worth a shot

Your bank should give you more than just the merchant ID. I'd call them back, they are just being lazy*
*not sure anything I've said is true but when I've queried payments I've been given contact details of said company.
