the real issue is that drivers will largely ignore them now and that is not safe .
there is little point in having a rule you wont enforce as everyone will ignore it
Watching the race on Sunday, I felt a moment of relief for Palmer, for outqualifying his much fancied team mate AND for bringing the Renault in for the first points of the season.
And then he spun.
I strongly suspect he'll be keeping the seat warm for someone, now.
You dont know Magnusen have got 6 points already?
Oops, no I didn't.
🙂
Magnusen seems stock around the 15 mark anyway that car just do not have much speed it seems.
James Allison to leave Ferrari, possibly to go to Renault. I felt incredibly sad for this guy when his wife died, hopefully this will help him out a little!
Kyvat not being renewed apparently
Yep, that poor fella has had a pretty terrible season!
With any luck Haryanto will make way for ocon or Van doorne after the summer break too. Hopefully the next year or 2 will see a few of the old guard bowing out (kimi, massa, button, alonso) and allow the "feeder" series to actually feed drivers into f1.
Red Bull / Toro Rosso are extremely mercenary when it comes to drivers, but you can't deny they have an eye for talent.
Remember when they somehow managed to hire three drivers called Sebastian?
Apparently Ross Brawn is fishing this weekend in Hockenheim.. he's on the plane there!
So Radio messages freed up again, and no Halo for next year (for now anyway!)...

I';m not sure about this changing the rules mid season.

Aye - that's been said on a few F1 forums. Lewis's problems in Baku were peoples first thoughts, and the championship could be decided on the points lost there.
There are always changes in interpretation of rules or new fia technical directives issued during the season - mass dampers, frics, bendy wings, double diffusers, fan cars, dual chassis etc etc. We don't get to hear about most of them as it's usually one team asking if they can do something and Charlie saying no. In fact I wonder what the record is for most consecutive races without an fia clarification in the last 10 years, I'd guess that 6 is too many.
True - but how many that have already seen punishments and points deductions for infringements?
The rules at the time of the/any 'infringement' were, are and will be the same for the whole grid so debates about 'what if's' and 'if only ....' are pretty pointless. It's all infinite, an inch this way, an inch the other, all split second decisions can be the difference between winning and losing, even life and death.
That's not to say there shouldn't be some bleedin stability in th rules and regs though!! 😡
another masterful performance from Lewis, Nico up to his old tricks then waved the white flag once he was behind.
The constant rule tweaking and inconsistencies of application of penalties is becoming a real bore. ROsberg doesnt show championship material although he does try every now and then. Riccardo looking good, I wonder how he would fare in a Merc.
Nice to have the commentary back and does make light work for the commentators. Halo , qualifying change, Double Dhabi whatever next
Britney again just didn't steer again until Verstappen was of the road. Overly aggressive by a mile.
Oh and hahahahaha.
More importantly it also means there's a strong possibly that LH can take his entire penalty and still be ahead in the championship at the end of whichever race he takes it at.
In theory, he could go to spa with a new engine in the car, swap it out at the end of fp2 and again after qualifying, 3 new engines for a 20 grid penalty then Hammer time 🙂

Bad workman blames his tools, he was on full lock apparently and not totally owned by a spotty Dutch teenager.
Saw his arse bad style. 😀

Makes sense to take it at Spa being a true power circuit. Wouldn't fancy stretching the current bits through that race...
Had to laugh at Britney on the radio when told of his 5 second penalty, 'I don't understand, I had full lock on'.
Aye, just at the point you missed the apex by 300 yards and had Max off the track.
Did we miss a conversation there telling him he was under investigation? Because he didn't have to ask why he'd got a penalty. Somebody needs to teach him what an apex is.

aye the only way he could have done less was to go off the track with him
he's hardly unbiased but 🙂
nice dig at merc with the "Team" thing too.
Driving to Cologne.
Roflcopter.
Retrotastic
I thought the wheels were increasing to 17/18" for next year? I assume that got dropped somewhere along the lines then?
I assume that got dropped somewhere along the lines then?
Yep.
I believe there was no desire from the teams to completely re-design the suspension systems, and how the whole car works.
And fat tyres where seen as part of F1.
The cars do look more purposeful with fatter tyres, there's something pleasingly retro about it.
Here's hoping that we get sonorous V12 engines back one day, along with trackside punch ups a la Salazar vs Piquet.

Oh yeah, that rings a bell. Pirellis arguent being "wtf do these bulbous things have to do with what we're trying to sell every day?"

thin end of the wedge, have them running round with p-zero tread pattern next 😉
I thought Pirelli were always a bit meh on 18" rims - it was Michelin and Bridgestone that said they wouldn't come back to F1 unless it adopted them.
So why do F1 cars have tyres with such tall sidewalls? I thought short side walls give better performance as the tyre doesn't squirm under hard cornering?
No suspension?
Wouldn't it be better to have properly damped suspension rather than bouncy tyre?
So why do F1 cars have tyres with such tall sidewalls? I thought short side walls give better performance as the tyre doesn't squirm under hard cornering?
Its because the wheel size is fixed fairly small to limit the size of brakes that can be used. As a result tall tyres are required to make a sensible sized wheel.
Or, thin sidewalls wouldnt leave much space for the manufacturers logos
most of the suspension in an F1 car is in the tyre. The cars are designed around that amount of tyre "squirm". Low profile road car tyres are largely lead by fashion.
Plenty of benefits to large side walls - more forgiving when you hit a bump, larger area for heat dissipation and you can design a car with very low suspension travel that is very stiff with low articulation angles. Also a nice big area for the manufacturers which I am sure has played a part over the years.
Would be interesting to see the weight difference to a larger rim with lower profile tyre too.
Aren't formula e using large wheels with low profile rubber?
