Posted a few months ago with regards to a problematic achilles. Ended up having an injection near to the achilles (not into it), which took out a lot of the inflammation.
However - it's still not 100% and the ultrasound shows calcification around the insertion. Am now having a course of shockwave therapy.
Has anyone tried this? Any success at all? I've had two sessions this far and feel no different!
Yup, it didn't work for me. I then ruptured it three weeks later. Had surgery to repair it and they removed a bone spur on the heel. This was May/June. Absolutely perfect now. Maybe a bit of pain in the morning.
I'd say give it three goes then back to Orthopaedic Consultant for the next stage.
I take it you've tried the physio exercises and heel inserts for shoes?
Ruptured? Jesus... What activity were you doing to rupture it?
It's been progressively getting worse over a few years. I've tried all conservative therapies, massage, physio, orthotics in shoes, periods of rest, heel dips and all of that. Nothing seems to have helped. I'm
Now at last chance saloon with the non invasive stuff....
I've had insertional tendonitis for years. It basically stopped me from doing everything other than riding. I got put forward for Extra blah blah blah through BUPA even though it had not been given NICE approval and wasn't officially covered. It immediately improved things after the first session (bloody hurt though!), after the 2nd not so much and nothing changed after the 3rd. Within a week of the final session I was back to square one.
I eventually had surgery which seems to have sorted it out but that was no fun either.
Not sure how it ruptured but I was walking down the ward (work in the Nhs, orthopaedic Trauma) turned sharply and boom on the floor. I have had Tendinopathy (the new term for tendinitis) in my Achilles for 18 months prior but I just ploughed through the pain. Was hideous in the morning but usually went away after a few hours, but towards the end it was constant pain.
From what my consultant/work colleague said it can take months and even years to heal.
Be prepared though surgery was 6 weeks nwb with a cast, the pwb for 4 weeks with a orthopaedic boot. Then physio. Ruptured in early June, back at work mid September.
Family history of ruptured Achilles, mum did hers at work (Nurse NHS) dad playing cricket.
