My beloved RX7 has gone to fund a forced house move, which I'm entirely unhappy about, but in the mean time (and until such time as I can buy another RX7) I'm looking for a cheap (i.e. sub-£1000) runaround to keep my NCB going. Doesn't have to tick any economy boxes, doesn't matter if it's a 1-seater or a 7-seater, truck, van, car, not bothered. What I *would* like though is something a bit left-field. I like tinkering, and I fancy the idea of something that could be used as a base for some kind of kit-car in the future. What you got?

Suzuki Jimny to turn into a amphibious dutton commander at a later date. You did say left-field.

A tatty spitfire. Numerous kit cars bassed on them.

Obvious answer - mk1 MX5. Hoot to drive, dickheads will call you a hairdresser, easy and cheap to fix, a whole world of bolt on bits and pieces and, should the will take you, there are conversion kits to make it into a Westfield/Caterham style thing.

Something very, very big and daft:

Mondeo ST24 or ST200 estate if you can find one. Cheap as chips but good fun, I had one for a while, had to sell it as I couldn't afford the petrol

That is a great shout!
the wife had one a couple of years back, so I know my way around them. I was umming and ahhing about the MEV kits for them, but knowing I could Westfield one has me sold. Maybe stick an RX7 engine in it...

There used to be a 'fittable on your drive' turbo kit for 5s (BBR??)
that'd might be enough make you keep the 5 body on it.

(The green car is the MGF donor version, the keen amongst you will recognise the wheels...)

Those rollbars are horrendous!

Toyota Mister Two? Endless potential for horrible kitcar conversion there.
