I,ve used them in anger on a couple of occasions.
Worst one was coming onto the M25 from the M40 I found a convertible Volvo on the hard shoulder with the occupants still in it and it merrily smoking away, the hood was down, and the rear seat passenger was holding the top of the drivers skull in his hands.it has been taken off by driving under the rear edge of a recovery trucks rear deck!
I emptied both my extinguishers and a load of my water out of my van, put the fire out, disconnected the battery and got the £%£& out of there.
Ambulance and fire brigade had arrived by that time.
Twice as a kid my dad stopped next to a burning car and sent me out with the fire extinguisher he always carried.
First time I went from asleep to fire fighting in about 15 seconds.
Second time some travellers in a car/ caravan combo.
Worked both times.

"Off you go Son, I'll stay back a safe distance and supervise!"
🙂
It's nice to help, because there is not much you do if your car is on fire and you have no fire extinguisher, other than run away.
I think my dad got annoyed after a bit as it was costing him £50 a pop or so to help people..
I ignited a bottle of butyl lithium (10 molar) during my PhD. I emptied a CO2 extinguisher on it, which went off like a flamethrower. It was quite exciting! I should have realised (and should have been told) that it would react violently. My students are better briefed and have to prepare for the accident before they start work.
yes, the woman who's car I extinguished promised to pay for a refill but never did...
Yes, at a fire station training ground.
When they say those water ones are only suitable for a waste paper basket sized for, they mean it. They set fire to a small bin and then got three of us to put it out with the piddly stream of water from extinguishers, we pretty much emptied them to put it out. Got to play with the other types too.
Had an out of date powder extinguisher in the van, big let down when I tried it out before taking it to the tip, had to bang it upside down and got virtually nothing out of it. Also had a customer put out a car fire with a powder extinguisher, he spent the 10 minutes waiting for an ambulance at the sink trying to flush it out of his eyes and trying to breath, medics said he would be very sick for the next day or two due to inhaling it.

Murray - MemberYes, but not for its intended purpose. Foam extinguishers work by mixing two fluids - one in the main part of the extinguisher, one that's released when you press the lever. I put the clear fluid in a toilet pan and the other fluid in a toilet cistern
Foam extinguishers haven't worked like that for many many decades.
Halon not banned, just restricted. You can still get it if it's needed,
@ bruneep, 1977, about September, not sure of the actual day. It worked well, I was most impressed.
