I was reading the BBC news website earlier and I saw that Katie Price has got herself into trouble for doing a Ouija board and conducting a seance in a church clicky

I have never done one and I must admit that things like that give me the creeps. 99% of me thinks it is all a load of mumbo jumbo, but the other 1% says stay well clear for some reason. I can remember people going on about them at school, but thankfully I was never in a position to be asked to participate in one.

So, have any of you been involved in one?

Didn't it use to be a popular board game until the Exorcist?

yes done it and the devil took my soul but I won out in the end thanks to the love of Jesus
Interestingly Houdini gave his family a password so that if he did come back this would allow them to know it was real and so far this test has not been passed

Did one at college. Freaked me out. Someone doing it with us had just lost a mate, and the board kept spelling out D-E-A-D over and over. Really quick, vicious movements too, not just gentle sliding.

Glad I am not alone!

I was going to say "willies" instead of creeps, but I thought somebody would take the mickey out of it.

Derren Brown's got a big section about them in his book. Really interesting.

Derek Acorah is, without question, the number one television psychic in the UK, bridging the gap between the niche cult shows to mainstream talk shows which rely on personality and the ability to capture the imagination.

As a result of Derek’s sincerity and enthusiastic delivery, Derek has achieved international acclaim with television, radio and personal appearances across the United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and the USA. Derek has also conducted telephone consultations for people as far south as India, Australia and New Zealand

does most haunted and is much parodied..think permatan sincere scouse psychic ...did a programme with Derren brown I am not overly familiar with his work but he does believe he can commune with the dead so obviously a loon.

Did one once, many years ago, and the only letters that came out sensibly were the name of the cartoon producer...

F R E D Q U I M B Y.

Bizarre... 😕

😆

It's a party game that relies on credulity to prompt hilarious results and group bonding.

About as 'real' as ghosts, werewolves, vampires and the rest of the supernatural mumbo jumbo that entertains us as thinking animals.

Did it as a teenager. With a few bits of paper, an upturned glass, some spooky lighting and the right set up you can have a lot of fun. I still think a game of Scrabble is better though.

Now, can I get to the bathroom and turn the light on before the hands reach out from under the floorboards to drag me to wherever for my disbelief?

he claims that he does believe he can commune with the dead

FTFY.

WRT the OP, does the church believe that Ouija boards work? Only, I thought only god could communicate with the dead, in which case, what's the problem?

Protecting their monopoly? We wouldn't have to feed children to priests if we could just pick up a wine glass and have a chat with their boss.

I guess it depends if you believe in God and the devil. So many people seem willing to believe in God but somehow the devil doesn't.
Personally I would advise avoiding at all cost - not good.

In fairness talking to the dead is really easy. It's getting them to talk back that's the hard bit.

Oh and it's all down to the ideomotor effect.

Even assuming a baseline of belief (as you'd expect from the Church), that doesn't imply that they believe in Ouija Boards. "God and the devil, yeah, we believe in that, but Ouija Boards, they're a load of mumbo jumbo."

Protecting their monopoly?

Precisely my point. If they accept that OB's work then that's tangible evidence for the atheists that the Church are making stuff up; if they dismiss them (which would make the most sense to me - if they admitted that we could have a hotline to god and the afterlife then why do we need religion?) then what's the problem with someone bringing one into a church any more than a Scrabble set?

Personally I would advise avoiding at all cost - not good.

Personally I would advise treating them with the same amount of satire and incredulity that you'd reserve for other half-baked beliefs like Homeopathy.
