Buy now or hold out until nearer my holiday (end of July)? Rate seems to be slowly dropping!

as always if I knew what was going to happen with currency I'd be paying somebody to type for me.

Are you planning to take the entire amount as cash?
How much is your budget? How much do you want?

honestly find a card with no fee's, use it and avoid carrying £1500 in cash and dealing with what you don't spend which is probably close to the saving you might make.

Yes, I've got a Halifax Mastercard that does 0% fees just wondering if the rate is going to drop a significant amount, as you say though if you could predict that you'd be retired by now 😉

So bit of a pointless post by me really!

Half now, half before you go - hedge your bets.
I think it will be as strong as it is now in a months time.

I did however say the dollar wouldn't fall past 1.75 and gold wouldn't go over $1000 an ounce.

My investment advice is free for a reason... 😉

Although your mastercard may be 0% fees but they'll have you on the rate - if there's a baseline you know you'll spend get that before you go. If you buy now and it drops you win, if you buy now and it rises well you'll still be better off than last year!

Whether you take card or cash does sort of depend on where you're going. We're off to Croatia sailing this year and, other than a single supermarket trip, we'll just be spending bits at beach cafe's - so cash only.

This whole 'zero fees/zero commission' BS does make me chuckle. There might not be a specific fee, but look at the buy/sell spread and you'll soon find it.

If you are flying then pre-book from one of the money exchange places at the airport. I think they all exchange at the best of todays rate or the day you travels rate. You only pay when you collect too. For example Money Corp are at Gatwick http://www.moneycorp.com/uk/travel-money/airport-collection/ Not sure how their rates compare to others?

Actually just checked and it looks like you can only pre-book one month in advance. So maybe helps a little nearer the time?

To be fair to my Halifax mastercard, each time I've used it I've got a better rate than I would at the local Post office or Travel agent.

I think I'll cover my hotel costs with some cash that i'll get now (as they will be the biggest expense) and get the rest nearer the time or just use my card.

I'm off to France/Italy on the motorbike, so fuel, tolls etc will not amount to much but we're staying in nice hotels so food/wine and accommodation will account for most of the budget 😉
