MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
This is NOT meant to be a political pro- or anti-EU thread. I just want to bring to your attention an initiative of the EU promoting European citizenship for all those currently in the EU who wish to retain it alongside their national citizenship.
As many people as possible are needed to sign up for it, so those of you on here who are interested are strongly encouraged.
Please visit this link and get yourself registered.
I, personally, am continually grateful to Guy Verhofstadt for working so tirelessly toward this possibility.
Done 🙂
Still fingers crossed it won't be needed...
I didn't know about this, thanks for posting it 🙂 We've both registered.
edit: and +1 to fingers crossed...
Oh yes, I’m all over it like a rash.
I’m good thanks. 🙂 🇮🇪
But I’ve supported it anyway for you guys.
Done ✅
Hmmm... isn't this basically the same as those UK Parliament petitions where if it gets enough signatures they'll think about telling you why you are wrong. Then if gets some more they'll have a debate about why you are wrong.
The rules here seem to be that it needs 1,000,000 signatures and must meet the minimum threshold of signatures in at least seven EU countries.
With suitable promotion we could probably get that in the UK but getting six other countries interested would be tough.
@molgrips : the link is http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/initiatives/ongoing/details/2018/000003 (and yes it is https://www.eucitizen2017.org//a > )
Done and thanks for the support deadlydarcy
@molgrips: yes all the same thing.
✅
Thanks for posting this! I will spread the word
UK expats should choose their country of residence after clicking on Molgrip’s link. It’ll then take you to that ciountry’s registration page. Seems you have to go through your local page/process.
excellent, thanks
Excuse my ignorance (quite literally). Is this, like the only way to vote against Brexit for those that lost the referendum?
Hmmm… isn’t this basically the same as those UK Parliament petitions
I don't know. I really hope it isn't. Verhofstadt has been talking about this possibility out of sympathy for British Remainers sincer the referendum, and it is from his Twitter feed that I got it. So hopefully that means it will carry a bit more weight than one of those Parliament petitions.
Is this, the only way to vote against Brexit for those that lost the referendum?
Which referendum? We've had two so far, but apparently a third would be undemocratic.
Which referendum?
Now you're just confusing me. June '16 wasn't it.
So hopefully that means it will carry a bit more weight than one of those Parliament petitions.
It does sound quite similar:
It is a participatory democracy instrument that allows citizens to suggest concrete legal changes in any field where the European Commission has power to propose legislation..
Once an initiative gathers 1 million signatures with minimum thresholds reached in at least 7 countries, the European Commission must decide whether or not to take action.
What happens when a citizens' initiative gets one million signatures?
The Commission will carefully examine the initiative. Within 3 months after receiving the initiative:
- Commission representatives will meet the organisers so they can explain in detail the issues raised in their initiative
- the organisers will have the opportunity to present their initiative at a public hearing in the European Parliament
- the Commission will adopt a formal response spelling out what action it will propose in response to the citizens' initiative, if any, and the reasons for doing or not doing so.

Has anyone thought of actually pissing off to the European mainland if you feel so strongly about it.
dont be silly we love our country, just dont want to lose the rights & benefits we have as european citizens

Ducks for cover......
Has anyone thought of actually pissing off to the European mainland if you feel so strongly about it.
Yep. I've done it before, but I came back. Possibly regretting that now. I'm concerned that I'm not quite in a position to do it right now, otherwise I definitely would. I hope we get a few years' extension, then maybe I can.
@philxx1975 - I quite like the UK in general. If people feel that they would like to stay in the UK but retain their current status as European Citizens then why is that an issue?

I'm pretty keen to not lose the right to be able to do this.

First of all, why should we leave OUR country to the Brexiteers, so that it can be turned into a right wing neo-liberal hell hole?
Secondly, if you disliked being in the EU so strongly, why didn't you piss off to America or Australia?
as i have the opposite problem, anyone want to adopt me after Brexit? got my own bikes.....

Actually already live on the mainland, problem is that post-Brexit I'm not sure whether I'll be able to stay here. Which would be a bit of a pain, what with house & family & cats & life etc all being here.

Signed, I don't like having my rights removed without any input.
Thanks, done.
Like DD I’ve supported this on behalf of the STW tribe.
Supported, but if all else fails I will try and get my French brother and sister in law to adopt me 🤔
UK has over 19,000 signatures. No other country more than 1,000. Not surprising since the others will effectively retain the right to free movement post Brexit I guess.
I was born a citizen of the EU and I'm pretty miffed, I must say.

many UK citizens are not dual nationals so what you effectively get is very disgruntled people trapped in a situation they cannot get out of. Or then ones that can get out are the ones the country should be desperately trying to attract in..
effectively it becomes a new class war where people actively sabotage each other and we all know how good that is for business and progress...
done, for the wife and I. can we do it for children? they are the one's I feel will suffer the most from this disaster...oops... sorry not a political thread!
Done.
@ravingdave: no, must be of voting age to count.
Supported, even those personally sorted 🇮🇪🇬🇧 dual national.

Hi! 😀
Which referendum?
Now you’re just confusing me. June ’16 wasn’t it.
There was one in 1975.
Supported. Hoping beyond hope for a referendum on the deal (or absence of...)
Done for Mr and Mrs Slow.
Not sure I'm comfortable with putting my name, date of birth and address into some random website.

Just come north to Scotland. We're taking action to keep our country in the EU.

Aye, I'm doing so on saturday actually, for a week of bike riding in France with a company owned and run by a British person. And then I'll come back, and it'll all be really easy and excellent because we're in the EU. We'll probably cross over into Italy at some points, and not have to go through customs or a checkpoint because of the EU, and we'll pay both sides in euros and it'll all be really easy and excellent. I'll probably speak German to everyone because I'm a moron, though.
</div>
And besides, I'm not that selfish, I want to defend lots of rights and opportunities that I don't personally use. Do you think we should only ever act out of personal self interest? I believe in a woman's right to vote but I'm never going to use that right... I want the right to travel for the students at the university I work for, for any kids I might ever have, for your kids if you might have them.
So is this like a free passport then? I could do with another one.
Has anyone thought of actually pissing off to the European mainland if you feel so strongly about it?
I know a few who have. Mid France/Spain/Crete They all went predominantly for the weather & the ones I've asked about Brexit seem to be un-arsed about it all. None of them are daft & have done enough homework about it all to be hardly concerned.
If this summers anything to go by I'd rather stay here!
Just pissed off to the mainland for good. Well, I’m popping back to collect my letters occasionally. TTFN UK!
I have looked at company transfers to the Nordics. But I'd need a Nordic language first I think to do the job.
