nice goal from the french.

think we've looked ok at times, just need young to show a bit more when we manage to break them up.

good call whoever mentioned lescott to score.

🙂 yup.

did lescott at 40-1, the 1-0 score at 7-1, and combined at 175-1.
I'm not nasri's greatest fan now, but its given me a bit to play with for the rest of the tournament. 🙂

Nail em up
Nail some sense into em

Too many wasteful and predictable passes in our own half. Likely to be our downfall I fear.

French commentary is interesting. They say the English are good on the counter attack but aren't really putting on pressure. "Saving energy" is how one of them put it.

Ribery is lying on the ground after being stood on the commentator dismisses it as him being tired?? Jeez.

Which way is it going to go then? Could see either side winning it tbh

excellent result.

i thought we did exactly what we had to. big test now is to see if we've got any teeth in games that we have to win rather than draw.

oh, and that ref ❓ how many fouls did cabaye commit ?

Looked pretty solid at the back there! That's a result!!! It doesn't have to be pretty, just get out of the group! It'll be interesting to see how this next game goes

Cabaye (and Ribery) lucky not to be booked for sure!

Ok, so we were solid, but pretty boring. Why do we only ever look like scoring from set pieces? Bloody dull to watch. At least it wasn't just hoof it to Carrol, so that was a blessing.

Quietly impressed. Disciplined, looked threatening at times on the counter, always going to be dangerous at set pieces and if we don't concede many that's going to make us competitive.

Downsides - we had to work bloody hard, and can they recover from that effort to do it again on Friday, and then Tuesday, (and then.....) We have to keep the ball better, and it's not a reflection on the player on the ball but the players off the ball making angles. Time and again we got the ball to AOC or Welbeck and they then had no outlets. It's hard work being an England midfielder or wingback in that system, but the whole game plan is built on keeping the workrate up.

Lastly, and I've said it many times before, but it's great to see it happening now. We should forget about trying to win the Euro's if we have WC aspirations in the future. The competition is as hard - if not harder - than the WC; the groups have no patsies at all whereas in the WC with 24 sides and a proportion of the qualifications going to the 'lesser' continents, getting out of the group is nowhere near as hard. Use the Euro's to bring on the likes of AOC, and Welbeck, and a few other youngsters too. If we do well, it's a bonus, but it should be a 4 year cycle with the Euro's being for experience and the WC for keeps.

As much as it pains me I thought jt looked very solid! Johnson worries me, he doesn't mind pushing up but always seems lacklustre when tracking back. Aoc looks like he could be very useful in that position, some lovely little touches. As above we do give the ball away too much, solve that and we could have every chance of progressing from the group. Well done England!

theotherlonv +1

good to see Hodgson having faith in the youngsters, and they didn't let him down. lets use this a building block to the WC.

Liked Welbeck, not so sure about Young. Gerrards distribution was pretty poor at times tbh.

Still, 1-1 is a decent result and the performance was honest and hard working with some positives for the future.

Can't complain really.

agree. we'll be better in that regard when rooney returns. young didn't show himself enough when we needed an out, but despite that we seemed to keep the ball comfortably at times i thought.

we could have done with ukraine and sweden sharing the points mind.

all im going to say is that if rooney was in milners position england would have won that 2-1. and thats coming from a scotsman 😉

or Welbeck, or Defoe, or......

Not Ashley Young though. He'd have knocked it past the GK, dived over his outstretched arm, and then Gerrard would have missed the penalty. We'd be deflated, France would go on to win 2-0. Small mercies.....

i hope everyone just stays grounded about it. only roy's 4th game and against a team that we've never beaten in a competitive match.

i hear that he's going to play carrol and wellbeck but i'd rather he keep the same team and hit them on the break, just try and be a bit more adventurous when we do it. going toe to toe with sweden plays to their strengths not ours imho.

still, trust in roy.

Well Torres looked like he'd found his shooting boots at the back of the wardrobe. Lets hope the other overpriced donkey knows where his are this evening. Looks like he's going to start him. Hardly inspires confidence, does it? For a striker* his positional play is absolutely woeful!

I was quite impressed that we weren't just hoofing long balls up front the other night. I can't see that being the case tonight. The only chance we've got of actually scoring IMHO is set pieces, and him sticking his big, daft pony-tailed noggin on the end of it.

* The word is used figuratively, and in no way suggests any actual ability

Talking about £20million Ashley Young ?^^^
He was out of position and out of his depth. A bit cruel to call him a striker 'cos he should be a wideman, but he made the sh1te french centre backs look very comfortable. He offered nothing, leaving young Danny Welbeck to do the work of two men.
Let alone his shooting boots, hope he finds his feet back out on the wing tonight. England need to offer some sort threat from both of the front two, and support them with a few crosses in open play.
Agree with the set pieces too. Sweden let in loads of headers: reckon it's Terry's turn for 1st scorer. Or Carrol if he plays 😉

Good work by the Swedish newspaper, capturing fleet streets terrible punning perfectly, probably should have at least hinted at some latent racism for full authenticity.

Guardedly, Immagonnasay I'm pleased for Carroll. Taken a lot of stick this year...a lot of it deservedly. But sometimes, you can't beat having a big lad in the box...it's worked for Sweden for years. 🙂

It was a well taken header, and he did seam to be a good five foot of the ground 😯

Lost composure for 5 mins or so after getting the goal, but then regained control, which has been something they have failed to do in recent history so was good to see.

Bit of a blatant dive by Young in there as well, but balanced out by the same from Ibrahimovic.
