No the belief the EU dictated the colour of our passports is an illustration of the total lack of factual knowledge held by the proponents of Brexit.

Why did we change the colour in the first place then?

It is far easier to foster a sense of togetherness if everyone has the same passport. Also as a customs officer I imagine that is all the passports are the same it simplifies your job. The fact the very last statement in the document says that the member states can without prejudice still use their original documents says it all.
Honestly the security on the old passports was crap and they needed to change to the new style anyway. It is another example of people looking to the past afraid to grasp the future.

They were manufactured as blue but due to the dye and materials became darker over time until they looked almost black...

It's not the colour change. It's the fact that people think this is a big deal we should be pleased about. That's why it's so shit.

Did you read what the Tories were saying about it?

Not "frothing fit" 5th laughing fit see the comedy gold of jam and ninfan's posts above and Farrage's declaring Happy Brexmas over the change. We have liberated ourselves from the Tyranny of a burgundy passport we negotiated for in a resolution we could have vetoed which allowed a national opt out! To celebrate rather than revert to our old blue black passport we are going to adopt virtually identical passport to an EU design in Smurf blue a colour that is already used by an EU country. The Brexiters are whooping this expensive farce up like its the equivalent of the Boston Tea Party. And the final irony the new passport is odds on to be made in the EU! Happy Brexfarce indeed!

But we had a vote to change them to French Navy blue? Yes? I'd have voted yes to that one, why not? Mix it up a little. Actually, a whole range of colours you could choose from when renewing your passport would have been snazzy… like those bank cards you get to choose a colour or picture for…probably cheaper than holding another referendum as well. I think I'd like bright orange, if it was one of the options.

"Take back control" and choose your own colour (from a limited set to stop the costs escalating of course). I'm quite taken with that symbolism of individual freedom actually… liking the idea more and more.

Anyway, looking forward to a future compromise, where we're all happy with our nice new bright blue docs, that say European Outer Union on them as well... doubt we'll get that in 2019… maybe one day, if we all start behaving sensibly.

Having a vote on it would have cost the tax payer money for something that's completely irrelevant and inconsequential.

There was no reason not to use the same style format as every one else.

Yes, the NHS is on its knees, David Davies has admitted they have done no prep work on outcome, food bank use rising, employment dropping, inflation up, real wages falling, etc etc etc.

And the best the tories can come up with, a passport colour change that no one under 40 will have any association with!.

Have we covered May siding with a right wing government neutering the power of the courts yet? Seems a more natural fit for her than siding with the EU on this I suppose.

Frankly I couldn't give an arse, but it's become a thing because the leavers are offering it up as a prime example of what 'taking back control' is delivering, and justifiably are being asked if that is the ****ing best that can be managed?

I don't think the vast majority care what colour thier passport is, and for those that do they can buy covers.

You can even get 'hello kitty' ones if that's your thing.

I think the point is, which as already been pointed out, at least twice now, is that this has been hailed as some kind of triumph.. To be fair brexit triumphs are few and far between so it's viewed by those of us who are sensible, as rediculous, considering there were never any hard rules on what colour UK passports have to be in the first place.

Comprende?

Yes! That's what really hacks me off!

The EU is just another scapegoat along with immigration, people on benefits etc etc. all deflecting attention away from the causes of the real rot in this country.

None of the above caused the banking crisis or is why the county is so utterly lacking in any form of social conscience.

Err possibly because it’s the only definate thing they’ve managed to agree and the fact that it appears the cunning Brexit plan doesn’t even exist on the back of a fag packet and the super secret sectorexcruciating detailed papers turn out to be only of use if you run out of toilet paper on the Euro star but the pm manages to proudly announce

The UK passport is an expression of our independence and sovereignty – symbolising our citizenship of a proud, great nation. That's why we have announced that the iconic #bluepassport will return after we leave the European Union in 2019.

The colour could have be changed at any time to blue but strangely no one cared about it before Brexit.

Yep Retainer definately has a ring to it....

So what’s going down under cover of the passport announcement. Can’t be a trade deal with our new Polish buddies 🙂

^ too much integrity and vitality to take the role.

It would need to be a superb actor to fully capture the wooden, dead eyed, charisma vacuum that is May. Maybe get a mannequin and get Jan Ravens to do the voice?

On second thought, Alan Rickman. He currently has the same vitality as May and would need a similar amount of propping up.....

Economic resilience is obviously a phrase open to a fair degree of interpretation 😉

Annual growth in the third quarter slowed to 1.7 percent, slightly higher than previously estimated but still the weakest pace in 4 1/2 years, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday. The economy expanded an unrevised 0.4 percent from the second quarter, well below the rates seen before the European Union referendum 18 months ago.

Hopefully we will buck the predictions, but our extraction from the EU could leave us in an ugly situation, unless we can put up with a severe period of pressure. Could go to the wire but hopefully we will come out smiling. 😉

Economy much more resilient that our side predicted. Perhaps that’s why we lost. Too much doom and gloom and no positive vision. Tant pis

I think that’s from the “I’m alright Jack” school of economics. Most are facing real-terms cuts in wages and resultant drop in standard of living with decreasing prospects that they will ever be as wealthy as their parents, for the first time in recorded history.

And THM the economy seems right in line with the predictions I saw. Perhaps not the ones that made the headlines but if one (as I know you would have) read the body text, this is what was predicted. Death by a thousand cuts. Enjoy.

Walking through town there are more boarded up shops than I can remember seeing previously, and there’s fewer Christmas lights out this year too. For a consumer led economy that’s not good.

Purely circumstantial evidence of course.

or is it?

A HMRC spokesman said: “Donations to campaign groups don’t qualify as exempt gifts to political parties, unless the recipient is a political party meeting the criteria set out in section 24 of the Inheritance Tax Act 1984.

“No special exemption was granted ahead of the 2016 referendum. Obviously, the legislation is applied equally to all organisations and groups.”

Following on from the blue passport nonsense can I make a request for the UK theme tune to be returned to Radio 4, its disappearance being equally nothing to do with the EU but I will certainly feel more in control again and it will go some way to making Britain grate again.

What other pointless stuff can we suggest - what about a dedicated 'Brexit' prom next year ....

Why would anyone bother? You get now that there was nothing stopping anyone doing it while being a member of the EU don't you - come on it's christmas you can admit you misread that one.
