The speaker was raging too- basically order of business turned upside down and instead of announcing it properly the tories decided to leak it to the press, meaning that sitting MPs who were in the debate were pretty much the last to find out. The whole thing's obviously incompetent and cowardly but that in particular is just douchbaggery.

If something looks afoot amongst the tory cabinet, I expect more than one to shoot it.

She said ‘risks are too great’ and she is going back to Brussels to secure ‘legally-binding assurance’ we won’t be trapped in backstop indefinitely

It's almost like they don't understand what 'backstop' means...

why the **** did that idiot labour mp grab the mace, that just gives a distraction the press will lap up, and fuel to the brexit loons. The tories are in disarray and instead of doing anything worthwhile he just resorts to juvenile antics. FFS is there not one worthwhile politician in the country in it's hour of need.

There is a little bar fight going on in the BBC comments, mostly involving leavers taking aim at their feet

I think the point is Parliament is not allowed to sit without the Mace as it signifies Royal Assent. It was his protest at the government not allowing a parliamentary vote.

Could the government be held in contempt for a second time? Maybe they will go for the hat trick?

Prediction for the day:

More mayhem
Leadership challenge (Boris didn't get a neater haircut for nothing)

Pick one or both. 🙂

Going to be a busy day.

What a farce, I want to believe there's some shrewd behind-the-scenes political maneuvering going on like you'd see on a political drama series, sadly I think it's more like how Spitting Image portrayed things.

It almost makes me pine for the days when the Tories were nasty and competent.

I'm sure it's more

Ledsome just came up with the same nothing will change. What is obvious is none of them have read the legal text, or are blatantly ignoring it.
And now the eu have form for cracking at the last moment. Waste of space.

Shrewd would be creating chaos right up until the last minute where the only option left is to remain (voted on as the action across the parties so no one party will lose out)

The thing that puzzles me is that surely under the terms of our EU membership we already had all the powers to control the issues that were the basis for the referendum campaign, especially immigration.

Isn’t the Maybot visiting individual EU leaders to try and drum up support for concessions she knows she won’t get from the commission?

Well, it’s an understandable approach. That worked really, really well the last time she tried it, didn’t it?

Not long until we hit the 100 day countdown.

If it does all go belly up, how many tins of beans do I need to stash to weather the storm?

Well not exactly. Leave it to the last moment with no action and we crash out.

IF she had a clue what was happening, going back to the EU now, knowing full well that they won’t give an inch, would scuttle anybody who says “we would renegotiate”

However...........

The slow motion car crash just got even slower.
The analogy doesn't really work any more.

More like the government is on the event horizon of a black hole. Frozen in time from thier perspective but already gone from the perspective of the outside observer.

We won't crash out, nobody wants that to happen (except for the nutters like Rees-Mogg) and when it comes down to it if we can't get an extension and can't agree on any deal then the only option left is to revoke A50 which we can do unilaterally. That is what will happen.

I'm not a master negotiator (certainly not in the Davis / Raab mould 😉 ) but telling the other party that they always fold at the last only makes them less likely to fold at the last.

Also on the 'renegotiation' - I don't remember but doesn't the deal need complete ratification by the r27; if a renegotiation is done would that also need r27 approval?

“Should happen” Never underestimate the will of a politician to grab an opportunity for power.

The A50 Withdrawal Agreement doesn't need all rEU member countries to agree to it (although currently they have) but an FTA does. This is one of the reasons the Withdrawal Agreement was never going to form the basis of an FTA in place of membership.

This is a long filibuster, talking down the clock until enough MPs get in line, wiht ERG diehards balanced by Labour brexiteers who what to see some sort of brexit, so the deal goes through.

not a low risk strategy but my guess this is what the (never forget) longest service home secretary of modern times is trying to achieve. It's awful to watch.

Which as a remainer could be TM's plan all along. She might not feal she can go directly against the referendum vote, but if parliament won't agree a deal it gives her the option of revoking article 50. "With huge regret, but in the national interest" ect, ect.

Never attribute to malice anything that can be explained by "Let's get through the week and see what turns up".

but that doesn't solve her problem or the tory dichotomy, the 80 or so UKIP mps in her own party the national interest doesn't come into it.

But will it? It would need the opportunity for Parliament to express an opinion. Will May allow a vote on it? She showed yesterday that she is happy to subvert democracy taking advantage of the lack of proper procedures in our entirely dysfunctional parliament to further her own ends, save her own job, preserve her own party's power, regardless of the impact on the country.

I've got everything crossed for that, too, but I'm still worried that the other way to go with no agreement is a no-deal Brexit...

“Let’s get through the week and see what turns up”.

Get through the week? Isn't the Maybot now making the 'how long can I last?' calculation on a minute-by-minute basis?
