From 1 September, companies in the EU will be banned from making or importing vacuum cleaners above 1600 watts.

From 1 September 2017, all vacuum cleaners will have to be less than 900w.

The new European rules are part of the EU's energy efficiency directive, designed to help tackle climate change.

I've got one I'll sell you. It's just gathering dust at the moment.

A great idea if it were applied to things that might make a difference. Limiting cars to 100bhp/tonne would make a lot more difference and perhaps save a few lives too.

Presumably it takes a little longer with a weaker vacuum cleaner so I wonder how much less electricity will be used.

Perhaps they could insist on each machine having a timer which only allows a few minutes use everyday?
