All the cartridges were out...So fitted complete new set. All ink levels now at full. All good so far. Printed one picture (10x6cm). Ink cartridge monitor thing now shows all carts are 1/2 full!
Is it just a realy basic graphic or have I just used 1/2 my ink? Or is it a attempt by Epson to get me to buy more ink faster?

Did you run the old cartridges empty? If you did there's a good chance the 1/2 cartridge has gone to refilling the print head and then a cleaning cycle will have wasted some ink too.
