Are they stupid?

Because they know about the French origins of the word?

en·vel·op
/en?vel?p/
Verb
Wrap up, cover, or surround completely.
Make obscure; conceal.

Na, just cos they're stooopid.

English pronunciation is riddled with inconsistencies and exceptions, even before we get onto regional dialect

Why worry

Have a scone, in the bath

You're mixing up the verb and the noun

Sadly it doesn't seem to have worked.

Sometimes the dictionary's just wrong. According to Collins

almond /???m?nd/

Everyone knows it's pronounced ?ælm?nd 😡

Well it is in Cumbria at least.

That's the way I've pronounced it for fifty-something years. You can come and call me stupid to my face if you like, see just exactly how far it gets you...
