Mrs Rickmeister's ("Orangina" on here), has a German nephew studying Mech Eng at University in Konstanz http://www.fh-konstanz.de/English.20.0.html. As part of his study he must do an internship of 5 months in his second year. This, ideally would be between August and December 2010. He is keen for a challenging position to use skills from the course based around computer modeling, design and stress testing. He has excellent conversational English as well as a very good technical competence in English too. And he can live with us in Edinburgh

If there is any interest for placements, or help in finding one, we can be contacted through the forum and can send a CV. Obviously a interview via skype or phone (due to Volcanic Ash...... ), is easily arranged...

He is very keen and reliable, an excellent skier and boarder, pretty good on a mountain bike and avid footy fan. Did his national service in the High Mountain Ski Patrol so a great shot with a rifle if that helps at all.......

Contact via the forum

Thanks
Rick

Try BAE Systems Regional Aircraft in Prestwick - they are looking for engineering interns, but I'm not sure where to find an advert. If in doubt, call and ask for Dr Mike West.

Rickmeister - I work as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Clyde Union Pumps in Glasgow and I know they take on students during the summer but definitely worth a try for an extended period like you're talking about. Let me know if you're keen and I'll see what I can do.

Albanach,

Absolutely interested. Can you contact me through the forum or can I get you at work? Just on Clyde Union Pumps web site.. looks good and the sort of tech environment he is hoping for. He has been doing stress analysis on pumps as part of his studies....

Thanks for your help....

Some good interesting stuff happening in the wave power field. Both Aquamarine Power and Pelamis are based in Edinburgh and would be well worth an enquiry I would imagine - these smaller companies are usually quite keen on interns/students.

Also there is Artemis Intelligent Power who do really cool stuff with hydraulic systems including a prototype hybrid hydraulic drive for a BMW 530d.

Also worth looking at Sulzer Pumps (East Kilbride), Howdens Compressors (Glasgow), Rolls-Royce (East Kilbride), Atkins Global to name a few. Weir Engineering Services (I could find out a contact here I reckon as well)

You could also try Selex Galileo at Crewe Toll (formerly Ferranti). I'm a stress engineer there, e-mail in profile.

Macavity, I don't really know the difference as I am a foreigner but it seems depending which recruiting website you look, the terms are both used ? What's your interpretation of them ?

The word Internship might be growing in popularity in the UK, but it still sounds more like prisoner to me. Sounds too much like Camp Xray Guantanamo Bay internees.
Student placement is (or used to be) a common term in the UK.

A great result today!

Julian has secured a placement with Artemis ip in Loanhead. Its a great opportunity and a good fit of challenging technology and a "young and funky" looking company to be around. Artemis ip has a German connection as Dr Uwe Stein has contacted Julian and basically given him the good news today.

None of this would have happened as smoothly, without the time and effort put in by folk offering help through this thread and basically putting their own time into this..

Thanks again and I know he is very pleased and excited.

Rick and Andrea.

Wow ! Hello again... thanks for asking as well...

His placement went very very well. The director, Uwe Stein admitted that he was the youngest person they had ever taken on. Julian handled all the conversations and negotiations himself and basically was over for 5 months paid experience. He was on a test rig analysing some pretty complicated data, understanding it and then leading a team of engineers to reshape parts that he subsequently tested again. He certainly moved the job he was allocated to and made it better.

In the time he was here he joined a footy team, helped take the team to a final they had never been to before, made some lifelong friends who went to see him in Germany and he basically fitted right in.

As you will probably know there was massive investment in Artemis IP by Mitsubishi and the Scottish Parliament of about £160 million as a centre of excellence it alternative technology and Julian was in amongst all of that as well. With Artemis and Mitsubishi together Julian could be well placed to move in a wider sense. Artemis have a very cool BMW car which recovers energy and is valued at £1 million, I managed a shot in that too!

Artemis are a pretty cool company with a great culture. Loads of international colleagues and it all worked for him. I think he got a fair bit of respect from his co-workers.

Uwe Stein called him earlier this year and offered him another placement. We are off to Livigno biking, then will pick him up from The Black Forest and will be heading back for another 8 weeks of work at better pay.

So all in all a massive success, again, many thanks for all your help. I will get Julian to give you a shout.

Hows things with you?

Rick

Sounds like everything went very well for him which is great to hear! Everything with myself is going well - moved to Ireland in October and secured a new job in the last few weeks. I hope everything continues to go well with him.
