MegaSack DRAW - This year's winner is user - rgwb
We will be in touch
Mentioned a little knocking noise what the car went in for it's MOT this morning. Apparently the top engine mounting is worn slightly. The garage said it wasn't an urgent change, the knocking will just get worse until it does need sorting.
I can live with the little knock (and £140 quid in my pocket...) for a while yet. Will leaving it have any knock-on effect to other parts in the car, or shall I just turn the stereo up a notch for a while?
Potential strain on driveshafts, exhaust system, gearbox etc
Excessive wear on gearbox output bearings, driveshafts, strain on electrical connectors causing wire failure due to repeated excessive flex, exhaust pivots overly stressed if its a transferse engine. Other engine mounts now under more stress, dying faster.
Will all take time, but you know you'll forget about it entirely and they'll all happen 😀
i drove a mini with a dodgy engine mount.
shoulda realised by how much the gear lever was moving that it had collapsed.
fuel line ripped out, carb smashed against bulkhead.
I once had a Mini with a subframe that had cracked almost all the way through. Scary though as just a day before it was picked up at its MOT I had been bombing it down a country road trying to get it to lift off a hump in the road with the back seat full of mates (I was a kid, I know much better now).
Having seen what happens when a subframe DOES go, I consider myself and my mates lucky to be alive. :-O
It must be something about mini's!!!
When my upper engine mounting went, so did the exhaust/manifold connection.. Also the headgasket blew, the head warped, and the only way to start the thing was with a big kitchen knife! Ah them were the days!
£140 for an engine mounting!! Obviously not a mini then! If its that expensive, then I'm guessing the other parts that could suffer may also be expensive, so your £140 could turn into £500 by next year, if you rag your car around.
🙂 I remember the joys of getting the exhaust seated on the manifold correctly on my Mini Clubman 1275GT - the 'olive' style connector was specially designed to never seat correctly I am sure - I think I spent more on paste and bandages than on the exhausts. 🙂
Depending on what car it is it could be easy to change yourself. My bro's mk2 Golf was a piece of cake to do. Trolley jack the engine up from the sump, undo the bolts, replace, retighten bolts, jobs a good'un! I wouldnt try it on a newer car though, not unless you know what you're doing...

and plasters for knuckles..
My floor split where the lower subframe mounts were... that was a fun one, and I managed to pull the hand brake off completely (only 2 spot welds) and ripped the rear wheel off and bent the radius arm under the car (1340 + 175/50x13 + rain + diesel!)
Do you find though that you still hanker after having another mini, despite the engine bay being designed by a sadist?
Ohh yes the joys of Mini ownership. I would buy one now except for the fact the price went stoopid after BMW launched the new one.
I just love the noise the engine makes - nothing else quite like it.
I was once working on the brakes and after I put the (Denovo) wheel back on I spun it round and my fingers ripped against the radius arm and took a nail off. Ohh dear I thought and went to wash it under the tap. The next thing I knew I was being pulled back out of the door frame by my mum after I fainted and put my head through the window in the door.
Minis - they should come with a Government Warning. 🙂
