I've ordered one of these liqui Moly Engine Flushes but i'm not sure whether I dare use it?
I read somewhere that it can take 6 flushes to remove all the additive that breaks the oil down. It's potentially to go in a 125k mile 1.6 hdi that has common issues with turbo feed pipes clogging. I generally do oil changes at ~10k miles but I bought it on ~115 so not sure on its service history.
I wouldn't use it in my car. If there was a known issue with turbo feed pipes clogging then i'd just replace the feed pipe.
I have one of those engines and I wouldn't touch that. Online forums tell you to change oil pump, oil pump pickup, oil feed line and return line take sump off and clean the sump then more regular oil changes with the correct low ash oil, some people also recommend removing the filter from the oil feed line as this blocks the turbo line (if the rest of the engine is clean it shouldn't be needed if it is needed it blocks up in no time and starves the turbo) There is also loads of other checks people suggest (check injector seals are ok etc) but no seen anyone recommend an oil flush.
Wouldn't touch it. If there pulleys are blocked then the strength of a detergent to unblock them is a) likely to do damage elsewhere, and b) likely to take a long while to get it off the system, especially if it has oil coolers etc.
I've fished several cars, but by using cheap mineral for a bit, dumping, repeating, then refilling with better stuff.
As said above, if feed pipes are likely to clog, replace the feed pipes.
Where is the oil feed filter to remove? is it at the engine end or turbo side? Wondering if its worth just taking the feed off to visually check it then replace if necessary rather than blindly just flushing it and hoping.
ETA: Turbo end banjo bolt appears to have the filter in.
If your feed pipes aren’t already clogged then surely you’d be better just carrying on with your 10k oil changes?
Too much bad press for me about these flushes even if some of it is unproven.
On mine C5 the oil feed is behind the dpf so I think that needs removed to get into the banjo bolt
If you could guarantee that all the flush would be removed by dropping the sump plug, then possibly. However, on a modern complex engine with feed pipes for turbo, cooler and possibly EGR cooler I'd steer clear. You'll never get it all out. Even my cinq hides 500ml away in the cooler and feed pipes. If you're really worried do a couple of changes at 2000 and a further 4000 mile intervals. Don't use crap oil for these, just live with the fact that you're throwing £60 into the recycling tank.
I had an issue with a ford zetec engine in a caterham 7, one of the hydraulic tappets wouldnt fill with oil, so wouldnt pressurise , leading to a right racket and loss of power, and if I'd left it unresolved , cam wear. I tried draining the oil and refilling with clean and new filters etc, but that didnt fix it.
I put a can of oil flush through, following the instructions etc, then drained and refilled with clean oil, new filter etc etc. and the issue with the tappet was fixed. That was 15 years ago, and many trackdays have been done since, I still have the car and the engine is still fine.
So I'd say it can and does work to fix issues with dirty oil that a normal oil change wont fix, but whether it will work for your issue I dont know.
Sounds a bit like colonic irrigation to me.
I used to use an oil flush on my Expert van with that engine, and changed the oil at a similar interval to you. Never had any problems with it and will do it again in my new one. Went from about 50k to 120k miles like that, but I did have the pick up pipe and sump properly cleaned when I first bought it.
Article on this in this months Car Mechanics magazine. I'm not going to regurgitate it here as that would be unfair on them!
I've halved the service intervals on all my cars and used an engine flush every time.
Current car has the same 1.6 hdi engine as you have, which I bought at 80k miles, just hitting 140k and will get another flush and oil change this weekend.
Mpg is the same as when I bought it, still sounds smooth and I'm looking to get to 250k.
