'energy saving device' old person taken advantage of content

my partner's dad has bought two of these:

Meet PowerSave™ – the intelligent energy-saving socket designed to cut wasted power and reduce your monthly energy bill by up to 86% in as little as 3 weeks. And the best part? You don’t have to change a single habit.

a magical device no doubt. boils my piss but i'm presuming the weasley words are nebulous enough to let them get away with it. he's early onset and stubborn with it, so they're unlikely to be returned for a refund sadly.

end of (admittedly poor) rant.

At least  he bought it while there was a 50% discount!  Great reviews!!!

He should buy the spray that improves hearing by 99%

Well naturally he bought two. Half price mens you can buy double the amount. Probably means it doubles your savings.🙄

Its the kinda shite thing my dad would've bought, I'd have a rant at him but at end of the day its his money and he's free to spend as he wants.

Just spent the last month or so decluttering mum's house for her house move this week. The amount of shite he bought was worse than I thought 🤣

You can reduce energy consumption by reducing voltage (not just power consumption before someone says P=V^2/R), but I very much doubt those devices do it.
Roughly speaking a 1.8% voltage reduction gave about 3.6% energy reduction when we tested the theory on the network - quite surprising when you think about thermostats, and kettles and constant power devices.
So we have reduced it a bit, but to reduce it by say 4% we need some pretty clever thinking - and sadly although the 60 year old power equipment is find the 10 year old comms and metering stuff is virtually obsolete.

It says UP TO 86% (or up to 99% hearing improvement), not at least - what are you moaning about! Does exactly what it says on the tin!!

Honestly, a reputable company just trying to provide a service and make a living 😉

You beat me to it.  0% is "up to 86%".

... that website has many hallmarks of a scam site.  I'd be blocking it for him, personally.

I saw an advert on youtube the other day for a very small electric heater, promising higher efficiency than other electric heaters.

I dunno how you can get more efficient than 100% which they all are... 100% of electric in = 100% heat out. therfore they are all 100% efficient.

Bigger ones use more electric, and smaller ones use less, but they all convert all the electricity they are fed into heat, there's no waste product, unless there is a fan built in, the fan will use a tiny amount of power to run, so it won't be quite 100% efficient in that case as some of the electricity input will be spent running the fan and making noise.

So on that baais an oil filled radiator is technically more efficient than any fan heater, as there's no moving parts.

Unless you went to the donald trump university of 'science'.

My FIL who's in his 70s bought a massive load of cheap postage stamps from someone on Facebook marketplace.

Used them on all the Christmas cards he sent

Every one of them arrived with big warning stickers on them saying the stamp was fake 😩

still ends up as heat in the room, ultimately.

Can one of you science explainers explain how you can have "UP TO 50% - 70% OFF" please. I'm a confused old codger.

My grandpa (long since deceased) was an absolute sucker for this sort of thing.

One Christmas (this is way back in the days of dial-up), he wanted to "get onto the internet". He had no idea why or what for but friends had spoken of The Internet and he wanted some of that. So we went to Currys or something to buy him a computer, I was with him to bat away the sales guy's attempt to upsell everything.

Got the computer package sorted, I left him to go to the till while I looked at something else. Got back to him, we drove home and then I discovered that at the till he'd been sold an extended warranty, some gold plated connector leads and some "discount" internet access package. Kicking myself for leaving him alone like that. He'd buy anything from anyone.

When he died my Mum discovered he had about 4 boiler care packages sold to him on the doorstep or over the phone. 🤬

This has been bugging me for the last couple of days because I'm sure it's wrong. If you were using that electricity to drive a pump, for example, to push 1000kg of water up to a pond 100m above the pump, the energy used is a function of pumping the water, not the voltage of the pump. If you drop the pump voltage the power will increase to compensate, (and the motor will likely be less efficient). Thermodynamics innit.

The powerful arnica extract formula restores your hearing from within, completely naturally: it cleanses, soothes , and activates your ears so that sounds are clear, sharp and vibrant again.

Arnica - isn’t that the stuff that’s supposed to heal bruises?

As far as I’m aware, there isn’t actually anything that can get rid of tinnitus, that’s actually damage to the actual ear structure itself. If that does magically help to clear up tinnitus, then I’m in, my ears are still ringing from a gig in 1985!

This one seems to be the one designed by a school kid,ex Tesla or ex nasa employees who have come up with something new that big business doesn’t want you to know.

My other personal favourite is the tai chi, gyms break you but it chi 9 minutes a day will give me abs and a sculptured body 🙂

This stuff really bugs me that the excuse is YouTube etc don’t know what ‘adverts’ are being shown as they just sell the space, they should be more responsible but big tech.

Just think of the number of people getting scammed on crypto 🙁

You saw what happened in the good old days which was more in plain sight  but this new stuff is going on behind closed doors without you seeing what your old relatives are happily clicking to make sure they don’t lose the chance of getting money before the ‘legal loopholes closed’.

That ramped up a lot recently with New Year when loads of people make resolutions to get fit / do more exercise etc so FB, YouTube and IG were full of adverts for calisthenics, "military workouts", home gym gear (which gyms don't want you to know about!) and weight loss formula (which doctors don't want you to know about!).

No, you are not accounting for the electrical energy used to create sound.

Regarding voltage drop devices, you need to remember the conservation of energy and the the basic power equation. Saves nothing, ever, might change the rate work is done at. Personally I suggest leaving the forum and reading text books or referencing qualified people/academic sources, rather than reading threads like this.

I'd guess the 86% reduction is a calculation based on how likely the cheaply made "diode in a case" is to fail, explode and spray mains powered molten/flaming plastic and electronics across the living room carpet and burn the house down.

I mean, that'll certainly reduce your electricity bill...

It is crazy how mainstream this has become. I work in financial services where you would hope financial literacy is high (spolier alert - it isn't) and it is totally normalised.

I know directly of people who put large sums in and lost significant amounts of money, when I asked how they were doing they were happy as it had gone back up - they hadn't escaped, just left it in there waiting for the next cliff edge.

Last time I was in the office I overheard a conversation on the next bank of desks, they were talking about crypto in the same way you discuss putting money in your pension or overpaying a mortgage - a totally mundane 'investment'.

I thought that too for years, but it can be made to work. We have the evidence at Northern Powergrid and we are trying to roll it out via our BEET project. https://www.northernpowergrid.com/beet

WPD / NGED have also published some evidence and Electricity NorthWest used the concept in their SmartStreet project.
In general terms it’s called Conservation Voltage Reduction.
