Morning All,
Just after a few (if there are any) tips on prolonging the battery life on my iphone3 when running Endomondo. It seems to drain the battery from 100% or there abouts completely in a 2.5 - 3hr ride.
Is it possible to run Endomondo in airplane mode for example and would that make a difference?
Cheers
Carl
Yes run the phone in airplane mode and it will double the battery life, I have just invested in a Garmin Edge 500 as I have become fed up with the battery dying mid-ride!
I run Endomondo in airplane mode on my Android phone and it greatly extends the battery life..
There is also a 'save battery' option if you haven't already found it.
I bought a higher capacity battery for my HTC Desire ( still manages to fit into the normal case though ) and can get a days usage + tracking Endomondo for 5-6 hours out of it now
If you can't fit a new battery then Airplane mode is a good alternative, there is also a low power mode in Endomondo, it says GPS accuracy stays the same but I've never had to use this to be able to confirm it.
Cheers I'll give that a try then and see how long the battery lasts.
Frogstomp - not found the 'save battery' option. Where would that be then? Maybe not an option on the iphone's

Airplane Mode on the iPhone shuts off the GPS 🙁
(no, I don't know why either)

Only available on the Android app - and judging by the Endo forums most people find it crap as it reduces the number of GPS polls so produces very jaggy traces.
I'm on an iPhone 4 and my 50 minute commute usually drains about 13% battery, without doing anything clever - so you should get a good six-seven hours out of it.
Some things you can try to eek a bit more out for long rides:
- turn off the Audio feedback if you don't use it.
- turn off the screen. It doesn't need to be on for Endo to work.
- kill all background apps
- turn off Bluetooth
- turn off 3G and Mobile Data (note: this means it won't do live tracking and you won't get Pep Talks)
- keep it somewhere where it will get a good GPS signal (e.g. on your bars). If it is in the bottom of your bag and constantly losing signal and having to search then that'll suck the life out of it and produce a crap trace.
Failing all that, buy a battery case like a Mophie

you can turn it back on.
it will work until it loses signal (ie a tunnel) but then won't reacquire.
My HTC would always go from fully charged to flat after a 2.5/3 hour ride running endomondo.
I started switching the wifi off whilst out on the bike and it had a dramatic effect. After a 3 hour ride last night I still have 3/4 full battery now (and I switched the wifi back on and stopped endo at 11pm when I got in last night).
Seems to be the Edmo + wifi that drains the battery.
you can turn it back on.
How?
you need a spare HTC desire to run endomondo on and use with memory map etc 😉
Well just been out for 1hr 41min with wi-fi off and its still used 57% of a fully charged battery. I'll try tomorrow with wi-fi off and in airplane mode. Failing that I might dig deep into my pockets and look for a Garmin unless you can get new/replacement batteries for the iphone 3?
You can get extra batteries that plug into the iphone. Would be cheaper than a new Garmin
you can turn it back on.
How?
your right. can't in iOS 5.1.1
i'm sure you could do it in an earlier version.
max i got from my iphone4 is 6 hours with wifi/bluetooth/3G and cellular data turned off. still had 15% left at the end. first fix was slow as a-gps doesnt work but once it was tracking it was fine.
battery life in a 3/3g was nowhere near as good.
i bought a garmin in the end.

Its a 3g, so maybe there'in lies the problem

You might be better spending the cash to upgrade to an iPhone 4/4s?
unless you can get new/replacement batteries for the iphone 3?
You can. Dodgy phone shop places will do it for you.
Maplin used to sell little kits with all the required tools to do it yourself.
Alternatively look at one of the battery cases that adds an external battery:
http://www.mophie.com/battery-cases-s/51.htm (not sure if you can get them for iPhone 3 though).
