We will be in touch
Above has gone and now spews water out of the overflow (going to be a big water bill if nothing else!). It seems to regulate its water height with a float (like a small toilet system). Not entirely sure how it works, but seems to mechanically control the incoming water pipe. Whatever it once did it no longer does.
The problem is: I can't seem to find out where to get a replacement, google tells me noting too useful, and eBay is completely blank, do they have a technical term I have missed?
The tank doesn't even have a stop cock, so the main one if off ATM!
Ay help would be appreciated.
Moe
its a cistern ball float valve.

Sounds like the valve isnt working in the header tank. Might work with a bit of a refurb in an emergency, or just get a replacement. Once you've shut off the mains water you can get to work on it.
There ought* to be a service valve on the cold feed to the cistern.
* yeah, yeah 😉
cost you less than a fiver all in..
swith the water off. disconnet the brass fitting from the pipe to the tank take off the nut holding the valve on the outside of the tak. pull valve and ball off as one unit.
replace with new valve and float move inner nut so its the same distance from the end as the one you just removed.. rplace in hole and secure with outer nut.
fasten pipe back onto valve.. DO NOT overtigthen nice and proper hand tight.. turn water back on and 'nip' up nut if it drips from nu DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN..
clear as mud.. total time taken less than 10 minutes..
Thanks chaps, that's just what I needed, off to screwfix in the morning. Should keep the tenants from bleeting for a while. There SHOULD be a service tap, but no such luck, I may be a grown up and fit one in the process, but I bet I won't! It's also going to be a little more than 10mins, it's in a cupboard and it's on the back of the tank. Also changing the thermostat at the same time.
I owe you around 3 beers now Mark!
hey, Moe, if you get in a pickle, PM me, Ive got some free time this week and can drop by if it all goes to pot.
Thabks for the kind offer, but unbelievably I have excelled myself, all done. Took longer than expected as the old nut didn't want to budge (and couldn't get purchase onto it due to location), so had to split it with a chisel (nice). Even manged to do it all (along with a new thermostat) whilst tenants watched on like fascinated puppies. Fit a storage heater later in the week and a bit of sash window repair and they are off my back until....something else breaks.
You see see why I had some difficulty with the nut:
