I have a 1977 Antoria Stratocaster made in the FugiGen factory in Japan- its a nice thing and plays ok but I get the feeling it's a collectors thing rather than a playing thing. It's in completely origional condition and I have owned it from 1981 - so should I flog it and buy something newer or get a complete refurb done on it? Just am clueless I just strum...
keep it buy another guitar.
guitars are like bikes : N+1
post a pic, keep it, buy something else for playing
There's one on Gumtree for £275 if you're looking for a price idea (unless you are Peter from Wales)
there were lots of strat copies made in japan in the 70s.. its nothing super special unless you're into guitars from that era..
a japanese fender strat from that era is another story..
sounds like you think its lacking something to suggest a refurb?
what's the issue?
(and yes N+1...)
N+1...
Trying to persuade mrsrkk01 that the same applies to amps 🙂
(Very much like the DSL40)
I've got a very road-worn Antoria SG copy that's a similar age if you wanted to start a collection of the brand?
couple of hundred maybe?
keep it.
Never sell guitars, only buy, it's one of the main rules 😀
Nothing wrong with it other than old age, they were identical to the 1970s FugiGen ibanez strats just a different stickers. It lacks the versatility of say a Tele Modern player and it's a bit "meh" sound wise. I was thinking about a decent set up new pickups (but keeping it origional looking) and a general once over on frets etc - just starting to play again after 25 years so I will hardly stretch it - also what's the view on the best modelling amp for practice?
Also what do you modern kids reckon is the best way to learn/get up to speed these days?
practice practice practice....same as always. 😆
I just like to make a noise!
I started playing again after a 15 year break, and bought a Line 6 POD so I could use headphones to avoid upsetting everyone for hours on end! The sounds are acceptable and it was reasonably cheap. I'd pick an album, play that through my pc speakers and balance the volumes out.
Luckily my band booked a practice room 2 nights a week for 6 months so I had the opportunity to play at volume too, and an incentive to properly practice as we'd got a gig to do, but I've made sure that since then, I've played regularly.
I'd put some new strings on your Antoria, see how it plays, then spend a morning in a guitar shop that sells Yamaha electrics. Some of their bottom end guitars are great for the money.
I've got an antoria acoustic somewhere (I keep guitars at various friends hoses!) nice guitar. "cheap" guitars have very little second hand value given teh quality of new cheap guitars and the ease of access to 0% finance. I tend to give my cheaper bits that i don't need to young musicians who appreciate the chance to try something new.
I just like to make a noise!
that's what they are made for 🙂
What sort of noises do you want to make?
Find a local teacher that covers that genre (as well as others) and practice daily. Even if only for 5 mins, pick it up daily.
Alternatively, justinguitar is good as is lick library and others. There are also some great book series worth a look too.
Cheers folks
It's amusing comparing justinguitar teaching ZZ Top's La Grange and Gibbons himself. Justin makes it seem really complicated and sounds somewhere near. A totally pissed Gibbons plays it for Kid Rock, and if you watch and listen you'll realise Justin over complicates the muting and fails on the timing and bend/pull off (not that I can do any better but I'm not posting a tutorial Youtube).
best modelling amp for practice
not a fan, but the blackstars are supposed to be decent.
i do have a micro cube which i cart to my weekly wedneday "guitar club" jam session thing when we've gone electric but at home i use a fender champion 600 valve amp, and a pile of pedals. more versatile IMO.
sounds like you're more bored of the guitar than anything. maybe it like ski99 said it could benefit from some strings and possibly a setup, that'll run to about £50 or so. (you know you should change strings when it sounds dull right?)
IMO better off leaving it original and getting something of a different flavour that'll give you a totally different sound. you mentioned telecasters, i'm a huge tele fan 🙂 for about 300 quid you can get a squier classic vibe tele which is awesome.
i've been through a pile of guitars, bought n sold etc.. and i've stuck to this magnificient 7 on my wall.
early 90s korean squier strat, early 90s korean squier tele, hohner les paul copy, cheap bass (for rocksmith), simon & patrick luthier dreadnought acoustic, tanglewood cutaway electro acoustic, dobro resonator. (and about 5 guitars in bits.. including a japanese strat copy..)
i'm guessing but if i had a budget of say approx 300 quid i'd go for the classic vibe tele, an epiphone les paul, or an acoustic
