My macbook is now 8 years old - works well still but I need a new battery soon etc etc. Forget all that - I WANT a new Macbook!!

I have access to "educational" people who would happily buy the laptop for me but I can't seem to access the discounts online. Anybody know what they are?

I am looking at the macbook pro with retina at £999 OR the new model macbook at £1049.

Not interested in Windows machines...

Thanks

yeah they don't really shout about it, but it's roughly 15% on a macbook pro or a mac mini. nothing on software anymore though...

When we used our daughters discount a few years ago we had to do it in an apple store.

there is a sneaky 'back-door' route to the educational prices that anyone can access (and use).

A quick google will show you 😉

Scroll down to the bottom of the page on Apple's UK site. The educational options are in the central list.

Convert - that link does give prices - thanks. However, seems that it is only 6% - is that correct?

it was about 15% on a macbook air last year when I bought one via my brother-in -law.

I think their may be two levels of discount, schools and then university.

I also noticed that these models have 802.11 wifi - does this mean the ethernet cable is dead? I work 'plugged in' at the moment!

They've not had ethernet for a while. You'll need a Thunderbolt to ethernet adaptor.

Those educational discount prices available on the "easily accessible" site aren't the same as those available to people accessing from a .ac.uk domain - on laptops/desktops the discount is actually around 15% as someone else pointed out.

My son is starting uni in September and I'm buying him a macbook for starting there so we can't buy through an education domain. I thought he would just register to get the discount. Is that not the case?

he'll probably have to buy it once he is at Uni. You may be able to get it in store if you take his acceptance letter though.

Pebble he will be able to buy it in his 1st week surely?

Is it not best to wait too to make sure an Apple is what he needs instead of a £300 laptop ??

He's got a Mac at home so a macbook makes sense for him.

I could wait but this is for his birthday which is before uni starts.

Just spoken to a very helpful guy at apple. I need to order via telephone to get the full discount then send his acceptance letter after I place the order.

Not in percentage terms but he said it was about £140 on a MacBook Pro, and yes the free headphones are included. And they'll be going straight on eBay.

You can access the mac educational store through NUS, Student beans or Unidays websites. To get on the person who is the student needs to be registered on the website and then its verified through their uni or college web site.

£140 discount is correct for the £999 Macbook Pro as I bought one 2 months ago.

Also ordered online and got an email a few days later with 3 yrs warranty cover which isn't advertised on the site but I've had it anytime I've bought a new mac online through the education store.

used to be easy to buy a mac via education links, even if not in it, guess they tighter that up

or if you just go to the store from on your campus network you don't need to register 🙂

As a follow up - Currys started offering 10% cash back on macbooks...the moment I ordered elsewhere! Might be helpful for someone though - think they also do quidco etc

"Pretty much 50% discount on gumtree for barely used macs."

Tried to buy one....odds on they dont exist. They just advertise to get suckers to put money into escrow for something that s too good to be true.
