Sold something worth a bit, not too much but more than I'd be willing to lose (£180).

Buyer says he doesn't have a paypal account (or it won't accept his debit card or something).

He wants to pay by bank transfer.

As I understand it, this type of transfer can't be recalled like Paypal, but is there some other way I could get scammed here?

Well you'd have to give him your sort code and bank account number so there is a risk. I think he can dispute the payment after it's made and try and recall it but banks aren't daft. If you are not comfortable re-offer it and say paypal only.

EDIT: with the new online payments system money is received within 2 hours, usually almost instant.

Tell him you want cash in an envelope?

If anything, being paid by BT is better, as there is no risk of chargebacks.
