I sold a jacket on ebay 7 weeks ago - the winning bidder was in Australia. Anyway, I've just had an email from him asking where the item is. I posted it the day after the auction ended. I have proof of postage but tracking to destination wasn't available (well it was, but for double the purchase price). I didn't offer (and he didn't pay for) postal insurance. Who is liable if this doesn't arrive?

You sold it to him including delivery so its up to you. He can't chase the postal company anyway, they will only talk to you

Unless it's changed recently: Assuming he paid by Paypal, the seller is covered only if they use a trackable delivery service. He can claim via Paypal either way, and if you can't provide tracking info you're liable.

Personally I never send any ebayed items abroad with anything other than Airsure (and I'll only send to Airsure destinations) and make sure the costs are explicit up front. Overseas bidders either pay for Airsure or they don't buy.

If you posted it Royal Mail you can claim compensation of up to about £40 IIRC. How much did you sell it for?

Thanks, I thought so.

Annoying this. I've sold quite a bit on ebay over a few years but of the last lot of stuff I sold I had 4 items go to overseas bidders despite the ad and preferences saying uk only. Of those 4, 1 never responded to emails and didn't pay and this one's item hasn't arrived. He's completely ignored all my emails saying I wouldn't post to oz too and just paid via paypal without other correspondence. In the end I decided to post it given the hassles of cancelling / refunding / neg feedback and then it doesn't turn up... I suspect that either it has arrived and he's trying to pull a fast one or it's stuck being cleaned / having import duties added to it in immigration. Ah well...

We were offered the insurance but it was some silly price - an extra £20 odd I think - though that looks like good value now of course.

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that it's time to stop selling on ebay.
