I'm a noob to selling stuff on Ebay so maybe it's something I'm doing wrong.
Is it common for people to win an auction and then not pay?
Is it common for people to make an offer that's accepted then not pay?
If so why? Can I do anything to stop these kind of bellends?
Sold 5 items the last few days and 2 of them haven't payed.🙄
I find non paying is worse with auctions - not sure why, but I only use BIN now and it’s not as bad.

They bid on lot's and pick which win they want to actually get. I can kind of see why aswell if you have a choice of ten similar items you'll be there forever if you want a bargain. Having said that I always snipe (in person) so not so frustrating as you can just focus on the next one.
You can set ebay to block non payers i think

Thanks. Just had a dig around and found out how to do this. Blocked anyone thats not paid twice in the last 12 months.
I had someone make me a best offer on a 2.8 rekon of £4, I countered that with £6 which they declined, they then won the auction at £10.50. Now they haven’t paid.
I’ve added them to my blocked buyer list and offered the next highest bidder a second chance offer before I relist it.
Thanks for reminding me to set block. Had a couple lately (for the first time ever) and they really hack me off. Trying to clear space in the hovel but little items seem to keep hanging around especially once they get the ‘curse’ of the timewaster/non-payer. Have you noticed that you can’t leave a non-payer negative feedback, only positive? It’s almost like ebay chose to hide these little shits under a rock, ready to spring on the unwary.
Yes, it happens a lot. There is nothing you can do about it as if they don't pay they don't pay. It then wastes your tie in raising case, waiting set time etc,. before you can relist.
I sell pretty much everything Buy It Now with payment required immediately so they cannot "win" the item without paying. Makes my life a lot easier even if I am potentially missing out on sale price but you can still set it high and then reduce if no takers.

It's more prevalent at this point in the month as people wait for payday before paying.
A few days isn't that long to wait*. Send a message and see how they respond.
*it is annoying but in the scheme of how long it takes people to pay, up to a week isn't completely unusual.
A few days isn’t that long to wait
The problem is that the unlikelyhood of them ever paying increases exponentially with time. If they haven't paid in 24 hrs, they aren't going to IME.
Buy it now with the "immediate payment required" option ticked is the best way to filter out NPBs. Also, there are quite a few settings you an make to block buyers with poor feedback / buyers who have been flagged by other sellers for NPB.
As oldtennisshoes says above, generally a legit buyer will pay within 24 hours. From memory I think eBay makes you wait 7 days before reporting a NPB and getting your feed back so what I do is message the buyer after 48 hours of the auction ending with a friendly reminder that they need to pay.
I usually word it along the lines of "hi mate, congratulations for winning the auction. I'm actually going away on business in the next couple of days and my wife doesn't drive so won't be able to get to the post office. Please can you pay today or tomorrow? The item is all wrapped and ready to post. Cheers"
If no response I'll message them on the 6th day with the line "Hi, I'm still waiting for payment for x item. Do you still want it? eBay automatically cancels the sale if not payed in 7 days so please pay within 24 hours"
If nothing on the 7th day I just raise a ticket with eBay and relist.
Turns out I know who one of my non payers is.
He used to post on here some time back (maybe still does) and has pissed about before with promises of really wanting stuff until payment time...
I'd already sent him one message asking for payment, then the invoice asking for payment and he had until just after 12 today to pay so i sent him another message.
Seems I managed to shame him into paying at the last minute.😁

It would be lovely if they were one of the above posters complaining about non payers
