Sold a couple of things on eBay lately. Got an email with fees invoice charging app 10% of the sale value...not sold any thing for a while but 10% seems way higher than it used to be? Any eBayers able to shed light on fee breakdowns?
To get a rough idea of how much eBay will gouge you in the future, use this eBay calculator.
Faaaaccckkk! That must be a new fee system? 10%??? Robbing gets! Thanks for that anyway Jamie...
I don't sell anything on Ebay any more.
Fees are too steep and then if you are paid with Paypal (which is the norm) they take a slice of that too.
Plus its now full of untrustworthy dicks too now.
Time will change it or there will be a better alternative along shortly. Fingers crossed for the latter.
I sold £1500 worth of kit last month. Looking forward to the bill. 👿
Says there..max 75
That's per transaction though isn't it?
Yes it is. It's been 10% for a number of years now. PayPal take their cut too, so with listing fees it's entirely plausible to wave goodbye to 15% of your profit. That said, IME you can get far more for things than on here (for example), so I think it's worth it.
I've been using ebay for years. Fees, including paypal have always been about 14%. Which is considerably less than most auctions. I'd rather not pay any fees. But if I had to pay 14% in fees versus not selling the item and have it sitting on the shelf I'd rather pay the fees.
Gumtrees is pretty much fees free, but there seem to be lots of numpties on it.
surely it's a price worth paying for ebay's famous bombproof seller-security ?
10%??? Robbing gets!
Have you tried any other auctioneers and see what they charge? 10% is buttons, I pay 35% at an industrial auctioneers for online auctions.
Do you pay a fee if your item doesn't sell? Apart from for insertion.
Nope.
what about postage (+cost of package) has anyone worked out the avg % of cost? any good online postage cost calculator?
ebay, paypal, and postage it all adds up and eats into the "profit" but what else is out there with that reach and number of people using it?
As said, I've easily got 25% more than things go for on here, plus postage on top of selling price. Happily pay 15% in fees.
As of this month private sellers get 100 free listings - and they've done away with the 'free listing weekends'.
There are some T&C's to it, but sure they will make the money back another way.
eBay still gives me the chance to sell on any [s]clutter/tat [/s] quality items I want to shift.
And let's not forget the Paypal protection - no gift payments...

Postage costs are normally down to the buyer so don't eat into sellers profits .
Note it's 10% OF TOTAL transaction so it's 10% of sale price AND P&P just a heads up!
I have just discovered that not only do ebay charge 10% final value fee, they also charge an additional 10% of the postage charges - what the freak is that all about!? Don't normally check my account, just pay as soon as a batch of listings are complete.
I think the fee on postage is to crack down on people who used to list stuff for £1 with £50 P&P to avoid paying fees. They were talking about making everything include P&P in the price, but there was a fairly unhappy reaction to that.
Ah, that sorta makes sense. I guess the answer then is to factor the postage charges in with the starting price and list free P&P - not the best solution though with postage prices as they are at the mo'.
Actually, scratch that - makes no difference either way does it? They'll still get their fees. 😕
I certainly need to put my postage charges up slightly.
🙂
